Come play, stay, and enjoy The Rock
We are an intriguing little island just a 20 minute ferry-ride
from West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay. Bowen is essentially the same size as Manhattan Island (22.96 sq. miles), but we think our wildlife is way more interesting: Pileated Woodpeckers, eagles, ravens, and cormorants, elegant Great Blue Herons, stoic Great Horned Owls, Barred Owls, Calliope Hummingbirds, and Pacific Tree Frogs; and never far from a garden, the
fearless Black-tailed Deer!
Bowen Island, a.k.a. “The Rock,” is 20 square miles of relatively untouched mature forest straddling two biological zones; a diversity found nowhere else in Canada. With a Mediterranean-like climate, the dry Coastal Fir Zone supports some of the largest remaining forests and woodlands of Arbutus and Douglas Fir. The Coastal Western Hemlock Zone, one of the wettest regions in the world, is found on only a handful of islands in the Howe Sound.

Bowen Island sits in Howe Sound at the entrance to the Georgia Straight, just three nautical miles from West Vancouver. We’ve been
welcoming visitors since the Squamish First Nations people summered here, and earned the moniker ‘the people’s playground’ in the early
1890s when mainlanders began to flock to Bowen for fun and frolic on ‘The Happy Isle’. Take a hike, play a round of golf, kayak, or just savour the quiet. Enjoy our isle for the day, stay for a rejuvenating
rest, or revel in a romantic weekend.

the island looks like one of the most liveable parts of the world’s
most liveable city Craig Platt, travel writer, Australia’s The Sydney Morning Herald
“In the time it takes many inner dwellers to reach the city, I’m in a tiny island community,
surrounded by thick forest and locals living an idyllic, rustic lifestyle.
While the island has its tourist attractions (a golf course, kayaking, nice cafes and a fantastic chocolate shop), it retains a village-like feel. Indeed, many Vancouverites seem to be unaware of its existence, or at least have never made the trip out to visit.
This seems to suit the locals just fine, who comfortably live out a Northern Exposure-style existence on the edge of a bustling metropolis.
Still, the island looks like one of the most liveable parts of the world’s most liveable city.”
Craig Platt, The Sydney Morning Herald
Visit for the day, moor your boat overnight, or stay for awhile - the Union
SteamShip Company (USSC) Marina’s harbour entrance is well-lit, shoal-free,
and offers stable floats capable of taking boats from 20 to 200 feet in length with
a new well appointed boat house for laundry, showers and Internet access.

Captain John A. Cates
was the man responsible for opening up Bowen Island as a resort for the day excursionist, writes Irene Howard in her book, Bowen Island 1872-1972, chronicling the history of the island. Cates, along with
his partner began the ferry service business with a little wooden-framed vessel, built in 1897 in Tacoma, Washington; and served both settler and holidayer on Howe Sound for the next 20 years. Cates, and his four brothers (all master mariners figured largely in the marine history of Vancouver) went on to build and operate a fleet of vessels through
their company, Terminal Steamship Navigation Company, that serviced the Burrard Inlet and Howe Sound coast to Squamish as the sole source of transportation, food, mail, equipment and supplies of all kinds.
In 1902 the company’s first large ship, the Britannia, was launched as Vancouver's "most modern" excursion boat, and became synonymous with picnic excursions and camping.
A steam screw vessel with a triple expansion engine from Glasgow, she was built in the Cates' False Creek shipyard; carried a registered tonnage of 221.64; and at 104.8 feet long could accommodate 300 passengers with both a men’s and women’s salon with plush maroon upholstered seating, a dining room aft on the lower deck, and a promenade deck above-constructed, all in for $45,000 . . . an enormous sum in the day!
Captain Cates was apparently a real showman with a flair for tales. As the story goes, allegedly Joseph Mannion, who owned the Granville Hotel, served as a city alderman, and owned the Bowen
brickyard used to build Vancouver's city hall, capsized his sloop off Navvy Jack Point. He and two youngsters were in danger of drowning. Cates happened to be loading gravel on a scow at a nearby West Vancouver beach and rowed out to rescue them. Mannion in gratitude promised him first chance to buy his Bowen Island property when he put it up for sale.
Cates would later turn Mannion’s Deep Bay mansion into lodging that offered meals, and by 1913 had amassed a 900 acre parcel of land adjoining Killarney Lake and the Snug Cove area that would become a completely sustainable operation for the Terminal Hotel with barns and thoroughbred horse stables, dairy cows, a slaughter house, greenhouses, and silo; in addition to a vegetable garden and fruit orchard.
By Dominion Day 1914 three ships had to be scheduled to carry holiday-makers back to Vancouver from Bowen Island, all leaving in the space of an hour.
At the end of 1919 the assets of Cate’s company totalled nearly a quarter of a million dollars and was purchased in 1920 by the Union Steamship Company.

With the 20 minute ferry ride you can leave your car in Horseshoe Bay and use the Bowen Island Community Shuttle. Walking on the ferry gives you the
opportunity to arrive closer to sailing time than if you were driving on. If you do drive over, there is a gas station located on Mt. Gardner Road just past BICS, our Bowen Island Community School.
Take a Bus: Horseshoe Bay is serviced regularly from downtown Vancouver by West Vancouver’s Blue Buses. Number 250 (the scenic route) and 257 (the express) arrive and depart from the ferry terminal.
Ride the Ferry: The Queen of Capilano, Bowen Island’s ferry, leaves Horseshoe Bay on the hour in the mornings from 6:00 am. There is a break after the noon sailing and the afternoon’s first sailing from Horseshoe Bay is at 2:25 pm: the last sailing leaves at 9:35 pm. Last sailing from the Bowen Island side is 10:00 pm.
Connect with the Bowen Island Community Shuttle: Our friendly bus drivers schedule their routes to connect commuters with ferry sailings, and have been known to act as tour guides—and all for the price of a bus ticket! Keep your transfer, we're a Translink service.

William and Florence Davies owned the Davies General Store and she would often make trips to English Bay for groceries and supplies in a rowboat fitted with another boat in tow. She gave birth to 13 children, and according to the family, for one delivery she rowed to Vancouver in a fourteen foot skiff and nine days later rowed back with a newborn—no report if she brought supplies back too!

Buckingham Palace, 1920's a USSC Steamship Cottage
VISIT DAVIES ORCHARD: In the 1920s the Union Steamship Company purchased
Captain Cates’ company and all of its holdings; renovated the Terminal Hotel and
renamed it Mt. Strachan Lodge; raised the day rate to $5.00; built a dance pavilion for 800; added 100 new cottages, a salt water swimming pool, lawn bowling and tennis courts; and enhanced the Lodge menu with items from the extensive vegetable gardens and apple orchards on the property. Folks came by the boat-load to enjoy the resort, the sweeping gardens, and picnic grounds and generally to have a good time. Then known as “The Happy Isle”, Bowen welcomed 5,000 visitors a weekend in those heady days.In addition to supporting the burgeoning tourist industry, settlers also tried to make a living on our thin and stoney land. Orchards were planted and fruit was shipped to Vancouver to sell. Back in 1892, William Davies reported to the Department of Agriculture that he grew a wide variety of apples in his orchard. Davies also supplied tents for campers and his cohort, Jacob Dorman operated a three tune steam-powered merry-go-round in Snug Cove.
Today, the Old General Store (our library), two Seaside Cottages, and the Lagoon Causeway, along with Davies Orchard and 10 of
the original Unions Steamship Cottages are all that remain. However, in 1989 Davies Orchard was purchased by Greater Vancouver Regional District (Metro Vancouver) as part of Crippen Park and our other keepers, Bowen Heritage (www.bowenheritage.ca) have been working to both restore and preserve Davies Orchard as a living museum for future generations. Our Applefest on October 12, is a celebration of Davies Orchard and the USSC cottage resort.

homeopathic products and another great spot for those small indulgences. And speaking of indulgences, treat yourself to a relaxing and rejuvenating eco-friendly treatment at Heartstone Spa-you'll float out refreshed. If you're looking for Fabulous Finds and great style, check-out the latest samples Susan has discovered-there's always something new. Coffee drinkers, don't pass up a visit to the Bowen Roasting Company where they slow roast small batches of organic beans to preserve the complex flavours-you'll love it! And if you're a drinker of a different type and like to experience different wines, pop into the Bowen Beer and Wine Cellar and try something new, or find an old favourite.
Just off the ferry to your left you’ll find The Union SteamShip Chandlery with lots of intriguing must haves. Pop into Nature Encounters to catch the unique collection of fairly-
traded African art, craft and home decor items. Carol organizes regular safaris to Africa and both her stories and photos are fascinating.
Up the hill in Artisan Square you’ll discover lots of unique small shops with intriguing products and sophisticated handcrafted
pieces. Great for gifts (or just treat yourself). Take a stroll. Meander through boutiques that capture the island character.
For a glimpse of the island’s local artwork, visit Artisan Square's Arts Pacific Gallery, an artist’s co-op with paintings, jewellery, pottery, cards, and fibre arts-and check out the shows at the Bowen Island Arts Council gallery. Wren Boutique is a classy combination of well-established brands and local designers set in a hip but cozy interior. With a sense of style informed by the fashion houses in Europe and a stint in the motion picture industry, Erin's keen sense of design delivers a simple and sophisticated merchandise mix of comfortable clothing for discerning tastes.
Movement Global is a locally designed line of uniquely modular clothing crafted from bamboo fibre-the vegetable cashmere. This luxurious sustainable knit fabric lends itself to the reversible cutting-edge designs, and is perfect for fashionable everyday wear; and the breathability of the bamboo fibre make the line a natural clothing choice for a yoga session.
Bell’Occhio means “pleasing to the eye” and has a fabulous selection of beautiful and affordable gifts for your home. Often the simplest things evoke the best memories.

Bowen Island is the best place to live in Metro Vancouver-maybe in the
world! Besides being all about the people we also have the lowest crime rating, the lowest municipal taxes, the 6th lowest house prices, the lowest density, the most green space per capita and the second highest ranking for elementary schools; and we're just a twenty-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver. Cohousing communities are designed and developed by the people who will be living in them. The residents are cooperative, community oriented, respectful of nature and concerned with their own impact on the local and global communities.
Belterra Cohousing members have been attracted to the idea of creating
a neighbourhood that is affordable as well as socially and environmentally responsible. They are a multigenerational community, whose members bring a rich array of life experiences.

hall, has been lovingly restored and remains delightfully timeless. lush idyllic surroundings create the perfect backdrop for that special day. Imagine celebrating your vows in a magical two-acre pastoral setting like Alderwood Farm with landscaped gardens and delightful animals, a charming chapel above the barn and memorable food. It's truly an enchanting place to make your memories.Evergreen Hall Guest House B&B, originally the Union Steamship Dance Hall, is a magical old building that has been transformed into a B&B, offering a private, self-contained upstairs suite, and two B&B rooms downstairs with a shared bath. And for folks wanting a quiet intimate space for a small business retreat, the bright main floor meeting room is perfect—flow outdoors on the large deck in the summer or cozy down in the winter with the wood burning fireplace. (You can almost hear them jivin' from the ol' days.)

board, or send the kids to summer camp, stay on the island for a few nights and take in our beautiful romantic sunsets from the water ... so close, but world’s away.
For the golf enthusiasts, a short scenic drive transports you to the island’s idyllic Bowen Island Golf Club, a nine-
hole public course with dazzling ocean views and a great little clubhouse restaurant.
