Step 1. Learn about skills, knowledge and experience that you need

Knowledge

If you are applying to be registered in the class of Commercial Builder (limited to structural fit-out work) and you have successfully completed one of the following qualifications, including the units of competency listed below the qualifications:

· Certificate III in Shopfitting CPC30116

· Certificate III in Carpentry CPC30211

· Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery CPC32011

Relevant units of competency include:

· Arrange building applications and approvals (CPCCBC4026A)

· Identify construction work hazards and select risk control strategies(CPCCWHS3001)

· Produce labour and material schedules for ordering (CPCCBC4005A)

· Apply building codes and standards to the construction process formedium rise building projects (CPCCBC5001B)

· Select and prepare a construction contract (CPCCBC4003A)

then you will satisfy the technical knowledge requirements for registration.

These qualifications do not include units of competency relating to applying for a building permit, nor to management of occupational health and safety, contracts or project budgets.

Experience

To assist in our assessment of whether you have the required experience for registration in this class of building practitioner, you must provide a portfolio of evidence (tables 1 and 2) that demonstrates your experience.

This portfolio should demonstrate your capacity to undertake all the activities associated with the class of Commercial Builder (limited to structural fit-out work) – in a competent manner and to a professional standard.

Your portfolio should include evidence of:

· your experience in the areas that you tick in table 1

· details for three different commercial construction projects that togetherdemonstrate your involvement in all stages of structural fit-out work,from project start to completion (table 2).

Finally, table 3 provides examples of the types of documentary evidence of your experience that you could provide.

Develop, monitor and manage occupational health and safety for construction sites and surrounds

Evidence should include:

• three examples of Safe Work Method statements (SWMSs) for each construction site

• job safety analyses for at least three different work tasks

• health and safety coordination plans for each construction site (if relevant)

• traffic management plans

• documentation related to site inductions including induction program, checklists and records management for each construction site.

Evidence may include:

• policies or procedures that you contributed to or implemented to manage health and safety

• completion of relevant OH&S certificates.

Select and manage subcontractors and licensed trades

Evidence should include:

• procedures for the recruitment of staff and contractors at required stages of each project

• contract documents or agreements used to engage staff or subcontractors

• procedures for ensuring staff and contracts hold appropriate licences/tickets, accreditation and training

• evidence that onsite training and induction was provided to staff and recorded.

Plan, coordinate and manage building work in line with architectural, designer and engineering specifications

Develop and manage project schedules for the work

• document register showing the following (as relevant) building permits, demolition permit documentation, the energy report, specifications, the design and engineering plans

• If practical, a complete set of A3 sized construction drawings and specifications for each construction project

• construction management plans that you contributed to or administered, including:

– project program charts detailing works to be undertaken, timelines and milestones for each stage of the construction work

– documentation related to your day-to-day coordination of the program of work

• documentation demonstrating application of NCC requirements, Australian Standards, and state or local statutory requirements, including the use and application of compliant building materials appropriate to the building class and type of construction

• risk management policies or procedures that you developed or contributed to, or administered

• copies of quality assurance documents and processes to ensure compliance of work and a defect-free building before handover (for example, trade compliance certificates)

• copies of handover documentation, including ‘as built’ plan updates, operations manuals etc.

• copies of relevant building surveyors inspections reports certifying works undertaken

• copies of building notices for which you were responsible for arranging work to meet a compliance requirement
