Prevention program can help change your life. At 63, John lost 36 pounds in the first 16 weeks of the program, lowered his blood pressure and improved his cholesterol

level. To date, he’s lost 100 pounds and reduced the waist size of his jeans from 42 to 35.

As John likes to say “The Diabetes Prevention Program is not only life changing—it’s fun.” Participants experience more energy and

a greater zeal for life. —Julie Parrott, MS, rD, ACe-CPT, Health Coach

Your bones are alive. Like muscles, they are living tissue and respond to pressure. When bones undergo good stress, such as bouncing, walking, or jumping, they will grow new cells.

To maintain strong, healthy bones, two types of exercise are important:

These types of exercises—along with eating well, getting enough calcium and vitamin D, and avoiding excessive drinking and smoking—can help keep your bones healthy for life!

Sign up today for a bone density screening. You’ll discover the density and strength of your bones and see whether you’re at risk for developing osteoporosis, a weakening of the bones that can lead to breaks.

See page 4 for details.

Put some pressure on your bones—it’s good for them!

For many people, it’s tough getting a healthy, home-cooked meal on the table every day. But it doesn’t need to be that way.

“You can fit eating healthy into your busy schedule—you just have to be prepared and get a little creative,” says Aimee Crant-Oksa, MS, rD, FAND, clinical nutrition manager at CentraState. She recommends:

Plan out meals and shopping lists. Aim for 3 to 4 days at a time so it’s not overwhelming in the beginning.

Wash and cut produce right away so it’s easy to grab at any time.

Take advantage of everyday kitchen items like muffin pans, mason jars, and pressure cookers for easy-to-clean, all-in-one meals.

use nutrient-rich, frozen vegetables when fresh ones are out of season.

There are five common obstacles that stop smokers from taking the leap, according to Amy Metzger, MSW, LCSW, behavioral health consultant at CentraState:

Fear of failure

Lack of support

Physical discomfort from withdrawal, such as cravings and urges

Difficulty ending a “relationship” with cigarettes

Lack of other coping skills to relieve stress

CentraState’s evidence-based smoking cessation program, A Time to Quit, covers both the physical and behavioral components.

“We do everything we can to empower people with the right tools to reinforce their decision to quit smoking and strengthen their resiliency,” says Dianne errichetti, rN, MSN, tobacco dependency treatment specialist at CentraState. “We make the program lighthearted, supportive, and fun.”
