Inductive Content Analysis

• Does NOT begin with a hypothesis.

• Researcher reads through the data looking for “emerging themes” which “jump out”.

Inductive Content Analysis

• Need to read the text several times.

• After the team notes items of interest, they try to group the data into “ higher level themes”.

Inductive Content Analysis

• Based on these higher themes (and quotes from the interviews that support them), the researcher then writes an interpretation of the data.

Inductive Content Analysis

• The researcher may apply reflexivity at the end.

• Finally, the interpretation is given back to the interviewee in order to establish…..– credibility

ICA Practicum1. Read the Transcript of a focus

group that will be handed out.2. Write down the general ideas.3. Go through it again looking for

themes and note/highlight them.4. Write down the themes you

pulled from the transcript5. Work in groups to see if these

themes crosscheck (researcher triangulation to increase credibility)

6. Give me at least 2 hypothesis from your work

7. Write a small paragraph for reflexivity. Things in red I want handed in.
