Arts Center: Pump Boys and DinettesJune 17-July 27, 2014

Pump Boys and Dinettes is a musical tribute to life by the roadside filled with high octane, toe-tappin tunes. It’s part musical, part comedy and 100% amazing! On Highway 57 somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, North Carolina, there’s a gas station next to a roadside eatery called the Double Cupp Diner. The four guys at the station have been known to do some auto repairs, but only when aided by quantities of beer and singing. The Cupp sisters, Prudie and Rhetta, celebrate their pie with the same zeal they bring to being neighborly with the boys. Single Tickets will be on sale beginning May 19. Preview tickets June 17-19 are $34 for adults and $24 for children 4-15; regular tickets are $44 for adults and $31 for children.

Hilton Head Island has no connection to the popular hotel chain or the infamous Paris. The name actually comes from an English sea captain named William Hilton, who surveyed the coastal waters between present-day Savannah and Charleston. Mapmakers at the time named the area’s most prominent feature, “Hilton’s Headlands,” in his honor.

There are many reasons why Hilton Head Island is a popular tourist destination. The unmatched beauty, the 12 miles of pristine beaches, the endless recreational opportunities and the mild winters all play a part.

There is also the golf. Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area offer a whopping 52 courses, 32 of which are open to public play. If you don’t play golf, we’ve still got plenty to do.

In fact, the only possible limit to your vacation fun is your imagination.

Here are a few facts and figures about our island:

•The island gets its name from Captain William Hilton, who sighted the island 350 years ago.

•We are located 20 miles north of Savannah, Ga., and 95 miles south of Charleston, S.C.

•The year-round population of the island is 38,000 but during peak season, that number can swell to 275,000.

•The Town of Hilton Head Island was incorporated as a municipality in 1983 as is well known for its “eco-friendly” development.

•All 12 miles of beach is open to the public.

•The Hilton Head Island area is home to a vast array of wildlife, including alligators, deer, logger-head sea turtles, manatee, hundreds of species of birds and dolphins.

About Our Island

About Our Island

Page 13: Explore & Enjoy Spring 2014

Life’s a Beach

Let’s start out with the basics: All of Hilton Head Island’s beach is public, but access to it is often private. The Town of Hilton Head Island designates many beach access points (see map page 15) around the island, with some metered parking and some free parking.

Dree-sen, Dry-sen, Drize-den ... there doesn’t seem to be a consensus on how to pronounce Driessen Beach Park. But locals say it’s DREE-sun, named after the athletic Driessen family. Islander Dan Driessen was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds right out of high school and enjoyed a 15-year MLB career, becoming the National League’s fi rst-ever designated hitter in the World Series in 1976.

Are you more of an explorer than a sunbather? Then Mitchelville Beach on the north end is the place for you. A more primitive setting, the receding tides leave more pluff mud than sand, but the beach is teeming with horseshoe crabs, fi sh and other wildlife. Wear your water shoes and bring your dog — they love it out there, too.

The names of the streets leading to the beach are alphabetical on both sides of Coligny Circle. South of the circle are indigenous plant names (Alder, Bayberry,

Cassina, etc.) and north of the circle are bird names (Avocet, Bittern, Curlew, Dove, etc.).

If you’re a local, chances are you think of Coligny Beach as the beach for tourists. But take another look: It’s one of the only beaches with free parking, and it’s got the best showering and changing facilities. Plus there are great tidal pools at low tide, making it a great place for little beachgoers to spot sand dollars and splash around. The splash pad is very popular with the kids.

There are tight restrictions on dogs at the beach now, but years ago another animal roamed free along the shoreline. Before the island became a tourist destination and rules were enacted to keep things orderly, island kids all had Marsh Tacky horses, which they’d freely ride up and down the beaches. They rode bareback in the summer and legend has it they’d have battles out in the waves, trying to knock one another off their trusty steeds.

No matter if you are heading to the beach by yourself, with your family or dog. Hilton Head has a beach to please everyone.

The purpose of this scenic driving tour is to help you to sample many of the good things Hilton Head offers. It includes harbors, salt marshes, fairways, neighborhoods, selected hotels and much more. One of the best parts of the tour is that it is free, except for fuel for your car and the $5 per vehicle daily entry fee at Sea Pines Plantation.

We have provided you with a suggested tour itinerary (beginning below) and a full-page tour map on page 15.

Where to Begin Your tour Your suggested tour begins at Stop 1, Harbour Town. Harbour Town is located within Sea Pines Plantation at the South end of the island.

You also may wish to visit only selected stops on the suggested tour. If time is limited, read through the descriptions of the various stops, and decide which would be of greatest interest to you.

Stop 1: harBour toWn, and harBour toWn pier Harbour Town may be the best known of Hilton Head’s scenic attractions. The marina is a popular stop for yachts traveling up and down the Intracoastal

Waterway, which extends from New York to Key West. Harbour Town has numerous shops and several restaurants.

Harbour Town, like Shelter Cove Harbour (farther along your tour), is considered by many to reflect much of the essence of Hilton Head. There is a pier at the base of the lighthouse that will take you well out into Calibogue Sound. It is almost like being in a boat without leaving shore.

If you want a truly outstanding scenic tour from the water, include a cruise from Harbour Town, South Beach Village or Shelter Cove Harbour (the latter two locations are farther along your route) as part of your itinerary!

Before you leave, be sure to stroll all the way around the harbor until you are opposite the lighthouse. Notice the elegant yachts as you walk. When you reach the end of the path, you will be standing just past the 18th green of the famous Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the prestigious RBC Heritage golf tournament.

Stop 2: BaYnard ruinS park Baynard Ruins Park is on your right just after you pass Baynard Cove Road and Marsh Drive. If you wish, park

your car at the entrance, and explore the ruins of the pre-Civil War home of William E. Baynard.

The ruins consist of foundations left when a Confederate raiding party razed the structure following the occupation of Hilton Head by Union forces during the Civil War. The Baynard home had been the long-time headquarters of a 2,450-acre cotton plantation.

Stop 3: South Beach Village Located on South Sea Pines Drive, South Beach Village is a New England–style shopping center. When you reach South Beach Village, you may wish to stop for a stroll. You will find boats, charming shops, fun restaurants and an overall atmosphere that is both pleasant and rather quaint.

Stop 4: North/South ForeSt Beach coligNy plaza Coligny Plaza is one of the island’s most popular locations to dine, shop and unwind. It is considered Hilton Head’s “downtown.” Many popular restaurants and shops are located here, along with a one-screen movie theater that mostly shows films from independent producers, aimed at an upscale audience. Being across the street from the island’s most popular beach, many visitors stroll Coligny’s sidewalks in swimsuits. There are more than 60 shops and restaurants and entertainment is provided nightly.

Stop 5: palmetto Bay mariNa A full-service marina offering dockage, laundry facilities, charters, water activities, shopping, restaurants and boat repair. Established in 1959, Palmetto Bay Marina is the oldest marina on the island. It is located at 86 Helmsman Way.

Stop 6: Shelter coVe harBour Shelter Cove Harbour, a Mediterranean-style harborside village, is another area where you should park your car and take a pleasant stroll. Shelter Cove boasts pleasant shops and restaurants, numerous boats and yachts, and lovely water vistas. Shelter Cove is Hilton Head’s largest harbor.

If you like Shelter Cove (and you will!), consider returning in the evening for Harbourfest. Entertainment nightly with Firweworks on Tuesdays at dark during the summer season.

Stop 7: palmetto DuNeS Located at the heart of Hilton Head Island, Palmetto Dunes Resort features three quality golf courses, an award-winning tennis center and an 11-mile lagoon that invites guests in kayaks and canoes to enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings. Many popular restaurants can also be found here.

Stop 8: port royal plaNtatioN Port Royal is the only private oceanside planned residential community on Hilton Head Island. It boasts two major Civil War sites (Fort Walker and Fort Sherman) and is home to the Spanish American War steam gun. All three sites are well-marked inside the plantation.

Stop 9: mitchelVille aND FiSh haul creek park The first self-govered freedmen’s town in America was Mitchelville, and its historical significance is remembered with an informational kiosk at Mitchelville Freedom Park. The kiosk is located inside of Fish Haul Creek Park, near the end of Beach City Road by the airport. There is an observation deck, a picnic pavilion restrooms and walking trails.

Stop 10: Fort mitchel aND hiltoN heaD plaNtatioN Fort Mitchel, deep in Hilton Head Plantation, is the last stop on the scenic tour. Please note that the security staff will not admit you to visit Fort Mitchel after dark or if you arrive at dusk. The area is very dark and not suitable for visiting late in the day.

Fort Mitchel, built in 1863, served as a base for the Union Blockade of Confederate supplies to Savannah and Charleston. It is a classic example of a seacoast earthworks gun battery of the Civil War era.

The remains of the earthworks plus two Civil War cannons are at the Fort Mitchel site. Pathways wind among the ruins, with signs along the way to explain the significance of each section.

eND oF your tour f you see some areas you especially like, why not return to them for a longer visit?

Daufuskie

Daufuskie islanD Located approximately one nautical mile, or a 30-minute boat ride from Hilton Head Daufuskie feels a world away. Accessible only by boat, there is no bridge to the Island. There are few cars, fewer restaurants, no supermarkets, and a lot of history and wildlife.

Artifacts suggest Native Americans inhabited the Island 10,000 years ago. They remained on Daufuskie until the 1800’s. The English arrived in South Carolina in the late 1600’s and began plantations to the Sea Island, including Daufuskie. By the time the Civil War broke out there were seven working cotton plantations on the Island.

By the end of the War the Island was inhabited primarily by freed slaves who were from Western Africa, or “Gullahs”. The isolation of Daufuskie Island allowed the slaves to keep their native culture alive, and today the Island is one of the few places in the United States where the Gullah culture still exists.

Today, Daufuskie Island is a mix of modern residential developments and native Islanders. Many roads are still dirt and many of the 300 full time residents use golf carts as their primary means of transportation.

A day of exploring Daufuskie may include a visit to the two room school house Pat Conroy made famous in his memoir The Water is Wide, a visit to the Old African Church, a stop at an art gallery, a visit to a deserted beach, a taste of Daufuskie deviled crab, and so much more.

Bluffton Just a short drive over the bridge, Bluffton was originally settled in the early 1800’s as a summer refuge for Lowcountry plantation owners. The high bluffs of the May River provided protection from both the heat and the insects while the waterway offered easy access to and from Savannah and Charleston.

The May River is a pristine waterway and a wonderful and picturesque place to kayak, sail, fish, or stand up paddleboard. You might find a sharks tooth in the banks of the May. Access the river via the Alljoy Boat Landing, located at the end of County Road 13.

One of the most beautiful Plantation Homes from Planter’s era is open to visitors. Rose Hill Mansion was built in the gothic style and designed by the same architect that created Bluffton’s Church of the Cross on Calhoun Street. Originally built in the late 1850s, the Rose Hill Mansion is furnished with period furniture and memorabilia from original owner James Brown Kirk.

Comprised of one-square mile, Old Town Bluffton is a fun and interesting area to shop and explore. Calhoun Street is the heart of Old Town and has shops, restaurants and galleries to explore. The Bluffton Farmer’s Market is where you can find beautiful produce and locally made baked goods and other treats every Thursday afternoon.

Come see why Bluffton’s official slogan is “A State of Mind.”

Visit Our NeighborsBiked and beached enough? Need a break from the sun? “Visit our neighbors next door’ in Bluffton and Daufuskie.

Page 23: Explore & Enjoy Spring 2014

www.forkandfun.com 23

If the ride over to Daufuskie weren’t enjoyable enough, passing beautiful homes, seeing smaller islands, watching the dolphins swimming along side the boat; then the experiences on Daufuskie Island will definitely make you glad you chose to make a trip to one of the most scenic and historical islands on the East Coast. There are buses to take you in comfort around the island, and golf carts to allow you to experience the island on your own.

Maybe just enjoying the quiet breezes as you lounge outside at one of the picnic tables overlooking Calibogue Sound will be one of your lasting memories.

Daufuskie Island is a beautiful location for a wedding, reunion, graduation party, family gathering or any fun occasion. Special discounted rates are available for groups. Consider spending the night in one of the comfortable air-conditioned Daufuskie Crab Cottages. “Rustic elegance” away from it all and an experience you’ll love sharing with your friends when you get back home.

Many locals and visitors agree that the single great-est attraction here is the water. Some are content just to look at it – they relish the simple pleasure of knowing that it’s there. Others, however, enjoy get-ting out on the rivers, sea, sounds and tidal creeks that make this place what it is. If you belong to this second category, there are plenty of boating adven-tures to be had.

GET YOUR PADDLE ON:Kayaking is an excellent way to explore the many small creeks that snake through the marsh, skirting uninhabited islands and leading you to hard-to-reach places harbouring the shyest of wildlife. There are a number of good kayak outfi tters and guide services, while experienced kayakers can simply take their boat to one of the many public landings and shove off into the blue. We recommend launching at Shelter Cove Marina, located roughly in the middle of Broad Creek. Go against the tide on your way out and use the tide on your way back. Your arms will thank you later.

FLY THE FRIENDLY SKIES:If you’re trying to fi nd the best way to kick back and relax on the island, why not do it 500 feet in the air? One of the most popular ways to get elevated around here is parasailing, allowing you the thrill of being up

high, and the relaxation of sitting back, feeling the breeze, and taking in the view. The parasailing experi-ence is much more than just the time in the air. The boat ride itself can be an adventure. Spot egrets and dolphins as you drift past million-dollar homes and yachts. Once you reach the open water, strap in and prepare for the ride of a lifetime.

CRUISE IN COMFORT:An excellent way to get out on the water, for those who don’t have their own boat, is to take a cruise. There are types of cruises for every taste: dolphin cruises, dinner cruises, booze cruises, singles cruises, benefi t cruises, boat tours and multi-day vacations along the Intracoastal Waterway. Drift past Buck Island’s Statue of Liberty, take the kids on a pirate adventure or book a trip to the historic Savannah riverfront. Most cruises are moderately priced. For a more inexpensive option, make friends with a local boater.

BE YOUR OWN CAPTAIN:Choose your own adventure by renting a boat or other vessel by the hour or day. Find the May River sandbar (a.k.a. Redneck Riviera), watch Tuesday night fi reworks by Shelter Cove or just putz around the island’s many

tidal creeks and rivers. Rent wave runners, small sailboats or larger power boats. The rental company will provide you with a nautical chart and explain how it works. Be sure to keep an eye on the tides, which rise and fall almost eight feet. Being stuck in the mud on a warm, humid day isn’t much fun.

SKIM THE SURFACE:Unlike surfi ng, skimboarding begins on the beach by dropping the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. Skimboarders use their momentum to skim out to breaking waves, which they then catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfi ng. Another aspect of skimboarding is fl atland, which involves perform-ing tricks derived from skateboarding on the wash of waves without catching shore breaks.

GO FOR A SAIL:Enjoy the area’s unique natural beauty on a sailing adventure. Narrated, interactive sailing is offered on the Pau Hana, the island’s biggest catamaran sailboat. You can also set sail on the island’s newest and fastest catamaran, the Carolina Moon, owned by Vagabond Cruises. Keep an eye out for the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin.

Page 29: Explore & Enjoy Spring 2014

FLY A KITE…AND YOURSELF:Speed is just one of the thrills that attract people to kiteboarding, an extreme water sport that is a hybrid of kiting, surfi ng and wakeboarding. Participants seem to just fl y across the water while occasionally jolting out of the water for a jump or an impressive fl ip. The sport is not only fun to watch, but fun to do, and is be-coming more and more popular on Hilton Head. With calm waves, favorable winds, no rocks and big sandy beaches, there is no better place to learn the sport.

WAKE ME UP:Surfi ng is the ancient art of climbing aboard a long-board and using the natural rhythm of waves and tides to propel yourself forward. Wakeboarding is basically like that, only the pure horsepower of a powerboat stands in for Mother Nature. Wakesurfi ng combines the best of both worlds. The main difference comes when the rider hits a certain speed, at which point they simply let go of the rope, carried forward by the wake of the boat and a total disregard for how momentum is supposed to work.

Other popular wakesports are kneeboarding, wake-boarding, tubing and wakeskating.

Lagoon fishing: Most of the lagoons on Hilton Head are brackish, meaning they are both fresh and salt water. La-goons offer a unique fishing experience because of the variety of species you can hook. Don’t let the calm waters fool you; fish can grow to enormous sizes (red drum can weigh more than 50 pounds).

Other fish caught in the lagoons include tarpon, striped bass, black drum and the occasional blue fish. Live bait such as shrimp and finger mullet are your best bets, but they are usually hard to come by unless you catch your own or are fishing off of a private charter boat. Spinning and top water lures fished with a lightweight spin rod are another popular option. If you have a few hours to spend on the water, a charter boat will sup-ply you with all the equipment, bait, and know-how needed to land a monster.

surf fishing: There are a lot of junk fish (skates, rays, small sharks) in the Carolina surf, which can be thrilling to catch, but frustrating for those in pursuit of game

fish. Red drum, kingfish, and flounder are some of the more prized fish that can be caught. Squid strips, minnows and bunker chunks are the most common types of bait used in the surf.

They can be purchased at any tackle shop along with 2- to 3-ounce sinkers to combat the rough water. Don’t feel like you have to cast halfway to the horizon to catch fish, some of the biggest can be taken right out of the breaking waves.

The best times to surf fish are early mornings and evenings, when the beach crowds have subsided and the fish are most active.

offshore fishing: If you are feeling particularly adventurous, and willing to spend a majority of the day surrounded by water, offshore fishing can provide some real thrills. Party boats generally accommodate large numbers of passengers, but private charters are also available (at a higher cost). Half and full day trips are typical. These trips generally target fish that are specific to the season, and can include marlin, tuna and cobia.

Drop a Line

Well known for its calm sea conditions, Hilton Head Island is a great place for the experienced or novice fisher-man to try their luck at catching the big one. Many local seafood restaurants will even clean and cook it for you (southern hospitality in action). Don’t let an unforgettable fishing trip be the one thing that got away this vacation.

Most offer specialized shark fi shing trips all year. Your vessel may travel many miles out to sea, so be sure to have your Dramamine on hand if you are prone to sea-sickness.

LICENSES AND REGULATIONS:South Carolina law requires that all anglers over the age of 16 have a state fi shing license to fi sh from the surf or water banks. A 14 day license is $5 for resi-dents and $11 for non-residents. Commercial fi shing boats provide all their passengers with licenses. Pri-vate plantations and resorts usually restrict fi shing to owners and guests, and each is subject to its own set of rules. Biking

Ride a Bike

Hilton Head Island truly is one of the best places in America to ride a bike. The Island was recently awarded a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community Award by the League of American Bicyclists, making it the only town in the State of South Carolina to achieve such an honor!

While the Island only measures about 12 miles long by 5 miles wide visitors can enjoy nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails accessible to all. In addition, there are close to 50 miles of paths behind the gates of private communities like Shipyard, Sea Pines, and Palmetto Dunes.

The fl at terrain and the bike path system make it very easy to ride on the bike paths, however many visitors fi nd the best place to pedal is on the beach. Enjoy a bike ride on the hard packed sand near the water line at low tide. It is great fun and it offers a spectacular view. You might even see some dolphins!

Rent or Bring your Own While it is common to see vehicles coming onto the Island packed with luggage and bicycles most visi-tors to the Island rent their bikes. There are many local bike rentals companies to choose from offering a wide variety of bikes at affordable rates. The smallest family member can enjoy a trailer, tag-along, training wheels, or mini-cruiser. Adults can choose from beach cruisers,

tandems, mountain bikes, hybrids, and more. Most bicycle rental companies offer free bike locks, deliv-ery and pick up. All offer helmets. A few companies offer bike rentals by the hour, or by the day. All offer weekly rentals.

Rules of the Road First and foremost, be a safe rider. Please pay atten-tion to traffi c lights, crosswalks, and stop signs. There are small stop signs posted for bicyclists safety on the pathways, and it is never safe to cross anywhere other than at a marked crosswalk.

Please lock your bike when not in use. As previously mentioned, bike rental companies usually provide bike locks at no additional cost.

Bike paths inside gated communities, or plantations, are restricted for use by residents and guests of that community. There are miles of beautiful bike paths open to all waiting for you to explore.

If you do decide to ride on the beach please do not ride in the water. The sea salt wreaks havoc on bikes and quickly damages the paint and moving parts.

Please use fresh water to rinse off bikes that might have salt water on them.

Vacation to Remember Many vacationers feel that biking on Hilton Head is one of the factors that make our Island special. We hope that you will take advantage of our bike paths and bi-cycle vendors to make this vacation one to remember.

9 to 5: The Musical is a hilarious story of friendship and payback. When pushed to the limit, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical hypocrite they call their boss. They conspire to take control of their company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do—even in a man’s world. Set in the late 1970s, 9 to 5: The Musical is the outrageous, thought-provoking and slightly romantic story about friends teaming up to “take care of business.”

Pump Boys and Dinettes is a musical tribute to life by the roadside. On Highway 57 somewhere between

Frog Level and Smyrna, North Carolina, there’s a gas station next to a roadside eatery called the Double Cupp Diner. The four guys at the station—Jim, Jack-son, Eddie and L.M.—have been known to do some auto repairs, but only when aided by a little singing and perhaps a few beers. The Cupp sisters, Prudie and Rhetta, celebrate their pie at the diner with the same zeal they bring to being neighborly with the boys.

OTHER OPTIONS The South Carolina Repertory Theater (136 Beach City Road) provides lesser known but high-quality dramatic works. For talented young people to hone their skills in all aspects of stagecraft, there’s the Main Street Youth Theater (25 New Orleans Road). Another jewel in the crown of Hilton Head Island’s music offerings is the 100-voices-strong Hilton Head Choral Society (hiltonheadchoralsociety.org), now in its 37th year.

The Art League of Hilton Head (www.artleaguehhi.org) is in its 42nd year and rightfully boasts about its reputation as one of the largest and most inclusive art organizations in our area. With 500 members and its access to exhibit space at the Walter Greer gallery in Shelter Cove it’s able to offer four outstanding exhibits each year.

A more recent group on the art scene is the Artists of Sea Pines. There are 55 members who paint outdoors and then exhibit their work at the CSA Gallery (175 Greenwood Drive). Ten percent of monies received for their work are donated to the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

Across the bridge in Bluffton, there is the Bluffton School of Dance and Performing Arts (59 Sheridan Park Circle) and an entire arts destination in Old Town Bluffton. Head over to Church and Calhoun Streets to view the work of artists from the Society of Bluffton Artists.

Shopping in Style

If you drove down William Hilton Parkway before picking up this magazine you probably noticed changes in the Hilton Head shopping arena. Shopping centers are at the beginning of a push on Hilton Head to rejuvenate retail areas.

The first shopping area to undergo redevelopment is the Mall at Shelter Cove. Originally built in 1988 the first stores of the new Shelter Cove Towne Centre, an 80,000 square foot Kroger grocery store and a free-standing Joseph A. Banks, opened December, 2013. These are the first two stores of what will be 290,000 square feet of retail space, 210 luxury apartments, and a five acre park.

The South End of the Island is the heart of the vacation area. The very first shopping center on the Island and a perennial favorite is Coligny Plaza at the intersection of Pope Avenue and North Forest Beach. There are over 60 stores, 15 restaurants and an unique movie theatre. Coligny Plaza is across the street from Coligny Beach and within walking distance of many hotels and villas.

Sea Pines is home to three major and very different shopping areas. Harbour Town Shops form a semi-circle around the picturesque Harbour Town boat basin. The Shops at Sea Pines Center include several restaurants and exclusive- to- Hilton Head shops and services. South Beach Marina Village is located at the southern tip of Hilton Head Island and has a quaint New England feel to it.

The Village at Wexford boasts 30 retail shops, restaurants, and services. One distinctive Hilton Head boutique at the Village at Wexford is The Porcupine. The Porcupine has everything the fashionable woman need or wants, from every day wear to special occasion attire to amazing accessories The Porcupine is the place on Hilton Head to find premium designer wear.
