The Phinisi
Design Location Tradition
With its origins in the 1840’s, the gor-geous Phinisi was created by fusing Asian and Western naval Architecture.
The story goes that a certain Malaysian sultan hired a westerner who had long settled in this part of the world to help him build a boat. His intention was to create a boat that resembled the most modern of western style boats. As a result, a royal schooner was built.
Some other theories point to the Dutch Some other theories point to the Dutch building their ships in Java for their inter Asian trading activities.
The name Phinisi (pinisiq) derives most certainly from “pinasse”, that was the common European word at the time to describe medium-sized sailing
boats.
Boat building and navigation involve sophisticated cognitive concepts and blueprints. The peoples of Tana Beru, Bira and Batu Licin have developed these skills and knowledge over hun-dreds of years. The craftmanship is passed from generation to generation, father to son. More than 70% of the father to son. More than 70% of the locals in this part of Sulawesi make a
living out of boat building.
It is understood that thanks to the gen-erous collaborative nature of the local tribes, they hugely benefited from each others expertise and improved their collective technical knowledge.Shipbuilding and sailing runs in the blood these communities and it is the focus of their day to day, and of course
their identity.
This word was actually referring to the rigging -i.e. seven to eight sails, con-sisting of two masts with 2 or 3 sails each, and 3 foresails on the bowsprit.
By 1900, the first Phinisi was built in Sulawesi, first with Padewakang hull and then the faster Palari hull was used instead. Other changes that happen around 1940 were the use of the nade sail original from easter Indonesia. By 1970, many Phinisis started to be By 1970, many Phinisis started to be equipped with engines, and a new change of hull was carried out in favor
of the lambo type.
In the years after that, caIn the years after that, cargo capacity increased, masts became shorter to favor the use of the engine, and sails started to be used only when winds are
favorable.

Our Team
A quick recap
The Fenides crew has many years of sailing experience in Indonesia. Some have a sailing background, and most come from
the diving industry.
OriginallOriginally, when we first got together many years ago, we used to organize trips for friends only, and soon the word spread out and it became clear that this type of expedition had a huge potential,
so we began to organize tours and safaris.
After a few years of conducting these explorations, the team decided to build a new liveaboard, and this time, one to match the decided to build a new liveaboard, and this time, one to match the highest requirements of adventure seeking divers and surfers who at the same time prefer better service and the comfort of a
superior vessel.

BANDA SEAUnmatched Beauty
[email protected] - fenidesliveaboard.com
Banda promises a world of diving delights for even the most experienced divers. The world’s healthiest, un-touched coral reefs, an inordinate number of fish species, as well as plenty of hammerhead shark hotspots,
make Banda a true diver’s Aladdin’s cave.
Known as The Spice Islands, Banda’s tiny volcanic islets are surrounded by deep waters that create perfect conditions for crystal-clear diving: visibility reaches 40 m from February-May.
Banda’s incredibly diverse fish population and its breathtaking array of pelagics, majestic hammerhead sharks, and giant tuna, mean that when you go diving in Banda Sea you will never be disappointed.
There is nowhere better in Indonesia for the chance to see large pelagic fish life and large numbers of sharks, combine that with some deep indo/Dutch history, old abandoned forts, nutmeg plantations and local markets.
Banda with The Fenides is a unique mix of diving, luxury, culture and relaxation.
Cross through deep oceanic trenches bordered with active smoke bellowing volcanos and coral islands, diving amongst glittering schools of countless fish and vivid corals in the Bandas, or slither through the world’s
densest population of sea snakes near Manuk volcano.A Banda expedition really has something for everyone…. And more!

ALORUnmatched Beauty
[email protected] - fenidesliveaboard.com
Alor is arguably a heaven on earth for scuba divers. Insane visibility and the most vibrant colours you will probably ever see underwater, Alor promises a world of discovery for even the most experienced divers.
As the area is relatively small, we can customize any given trip and the distances travelled aboard The Fenides tend to be small.
Although currents can be strong at times, it’s this constantly refreshing water that draws in such huge num-bers of fish both big and small. The crystal blue seas are some of the clearest in the world. As if that’s not
enough, Alor’s above-water landscape does not disappoint either!
Currents can make for tricky sailing around Alor, so it’s not uncommon for us to anchor up in a protected bay near a couple of dive sites and use our speedboats to get to our dives. These currents make it hard to predict which sites will be best to dive on any given day, therefore, our experienced cruise director and dive team will
choose the best dive sites for your trip once you are on board.
Alor has plenty of potential for exploration even for those who have already dived in it. So, all Fenides trips will try to do at least a few exploration dives: testing the waters to find new wonders and maybe track down
some big marine life!
