APL HAPPENINGS: Discover your Roots @YourLibrary By Christine Johnson, North Region SupervisorI remember going to my local public library as a child and being so excited to check out books and sign up for the summer reading program. Back then, we didn’t really get prizes but we did get our names on the bulletin board. That was before the Internet though and now things have changed. I’ve been a librarian for about 15 years and I started out as a Children’s Librarian at the big Denver Public Library. It seemed like a dream come true to be able to do storytime and help children and their caregivers find books! Now I’m a supervisor and I spend my time doing schedules and time sheets, but I am making time to still do storytimes and hang out with children to remind myself of why I became a librarian. I remember the wonder I felt as a child when there was a new book that I hadn’t read yet and I try to instill that wonder when I’m interacting with children. I love to visit schools, do storytime for all ages and sign the children up for library cards. They still get excited! I work in the North Region and many people come to the library to look for a job, learn how to use a computer, learn how to sew (yes, we have a sewing lab!) and just have a safe place to hang out. It can be difficult to see people struggling, but also rewarding to have someone come back to tell me that they found a job because of the help they received at the library. Libraries do matter, they are relevant…just in a different way than in the past. These days you can even do yoga with a kitten!

APL HAPPENINGS: Coming soon ... Discovery Kits! Keep an eye out for Discovery Kits coming to your local branch in the coming months! Discovery Kits will have both storytime and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) themes. Each kit will include activities, books and a parent guide for suggestions on how to use the materials. The kits can be checked out and taken home. Get excited for these fun Discovery Kits - we sure are!5
