Lightning and PowerSurges

Power Sources

Arrange all power cords so thatpeople cannot walk on the cords,place objects on the cords, or placeobjects against the cords, which candamage the cords. Give particularattention to the cords at the point atwhich the cord connects to the plug,at electrical outlets, and at theplaces where the cords exit theequipment.

Power Cord Protection

Ground (earth) your cable systemto provide some protection againstvoltage surges and built-up staticcharges. Plug your equipment into asurge protector in order to reducethe risk of damage from lightningstrikes and power surges. If youhave questions, call your cableservice provider.

Before cleaning this equipment,unplug it from the electrical outlet.Use a damp cloth to clean thisequipment. Do not use a liquidcleaner or an aerosol cleaner. Donot use a magnetic/static cleaningdevice (dust remover) to clean thisequipment.

OverloadingDo not overload electrical outlets,extension cords, or integralconvenience receptacles, as this canresult in a risk of fire or electricshock. For equipment that requiresbattery power or other sources tooperate, refer to the operatinginstructions for that equipment.

Do not use accessories with thisequipment unless recommended byyour cable service provider.

Accessories

PlacementPlace this equipment in a locationthat is close enough to an electricaloutlet and where the power cord iseasily accessible to be disconnectedfrom the wall outlet or from the rearpanel of the Entertainment Server.Place this equipment on a stablesurface. The surface must supportthe size and weight of thisequipment.

Grounding

Do not open the cover of thisequipment. If you open the cover,your warranty will be void. Refer allservicing to qualified personnelonly. Contact your cable serviceprovider for instructions.

Servicing

If you are unable to insert this plugfully into the outlet, contact anelectrician to replace your obsoleteoutlet.

This equipment has a two-prongplug. Properly ground (earth) thisequipment by inserting the plug intoa grounded electrical, two-socketoutlet. If this plug is polarized, ithas one wide prong and one narrowprong. This plug fits only one way.

CAUTION:To prevent electric shock,match wide blade of plug tothe wide slot, and then fullyinsert.

Damage that RequiresService

Installing the Entertainment Server

Getting StartedCongratulations for adding the Explorer® 8000Home Entertainment Server to your televisionviewing experience!The Explorer 8000 Home Entertainment Server isequipped with the following Digital VideoRecorder (DVR) and picture-in-picture (PIP)features:• A DVR feature to record a TV program while

you view a different program or to record twoprograms simultaneously

• A PIP feature to simultaneously view anotherprogram even if your TV does not have PIPcapability

Use the instructions in this guide to install theEntertainment Server, to become familiar with thekeys on the front panel of the EntertainmentServer, and to access your cable services. Then,begin enjoying the features of the EntertainmentServer.

Explorer eClubTo obtain additional information about theEntertainment Server, Scientific-Atlanta invitesyou to join the Explorer eClub. This online clubprovides news and “what’s up” information aboutthe Entertainment Server and offers you a chanceto win premium items.To join the Explorer eClub, you must know theserial number of your Entertainment Server. Theserial number is on a bar code on the back of theEntertainment Server and looks similar to thisexample:

1. Unplug all electronic devices before connecting theEntertainment Server.

2. Connect the Entertainment Server to the stereo TVas shown in the diagram.

3. Connect the Entertainment Server to the coaxialcable coming from the wall.

4. Plug the Entertainment Server and the TV into anAC power source.Important: Do not press the Power key on theEntertainment Server yet.

5. Turn on the power to your TV, and set the inputchannel assigned by your cable service provider.

6. Wait for the time to display on the LED display.Important: It takes 2 to 3 minutes for the Enter-tainment Server to be updated with the latestprogramming and service information. When thefront panel displays the time, the update iscomplete.

7. Press the Power key on the Entertainment Server.

Access cable services and programs by pressingthe following keys on the front panel of theEntertainment Server or on the remote control.(Refer to your remote control user’s guide forprogramming instructions.)• Guide — Access the on-screen guide. The

on-screen guide displays schedules of TVprograms and other services available from yourcable service provider, such as video-on-demandand pay-per-view programs.

• Arrows — Highlight a program in the schedule.• Info — Display the description of a specific

program (either from the on-screen guide orwhile viewing a program).

• Select — View a specific program in the guide.For more information, read the user’s guides thatyour cable service provider included with theEntertainment Server installation package. Theseguides provide operating instructions for theon-screen guide, your remote control, and the VCRCommander™ service (if available).If your Entertainment Server does not performas expected, check the following conditions:• Verify that the power to your TV is turned on.• Verify that the smart card is inserted in the

front slot of your Entertainment Server (ifrequired by your cable service provider).

• If plugged into a wall switch, verify the switchis in the ON position.

• Verify that all cables are properly connected.• Verify that your TV is tuned to the proper

output channel (3 or 4).• Verify that the Entertainment Server power

light is on.

If the Entertainment Server does not perform asexpected after checking the power, the cables,and the output channel, check the followingconditions:No picture• If your system includes a VCR and/or stereo

system, verify that you have properlyconnected them to the Entertainment Server.

No color• Verify that the current TV program is broadcast

in color.• Adjust the TV color controls.No sound• If your setup includes a VCR and/or stereo,

verify that you have properly connected themto the Entertainment Server.

• Verify that the volume is turned up.• Verify that the mute function is not engaged.

The channel number on the LED flashes.Press Info on the remote control or the front panelof the Entertainment Server. You may havepressed the Power key before the EntertainmentServer received all of the latest programmingupdates.

The TV screen displays a message indicatingthat the Entertainment Server is automati-cally updating its software.Wait for the time to display on the LED beforecontinuing with the installation process. When thefront panel displays the time, the update iscomplete.Note: If you need further assistance, contact yourcable service provider.

Accessing Programs

The serial number begins with SA and is locatedin the lower left corner of the bar code. Write theserial number here: _______________ .

Before Installing the EntertainmentServer• Read the IMPORTANT RULES FOR SAFE

OPERATION section of this guide.• Locate the serial number, which is on a bar

code on the back panel of the EntertainmentServer. You will need this serial number to jointhe Explorer eClub. Also, your cable serviceprovider may need to know this serial numberto provide technical assistance.

• If you plug the Entertainment Server into anoutlet that is controlled by a wall switch,keep the switch in the ON position. Theon-screen guide is updated nightly. If the wallswitch is in the OFF position, your Entertain-ment Server will not receive the latestprogramming updates.

• Keep the top of the Entertainment Server freeof all objects and electronic devices, includingyour TV.

• It is recommended that you use a surgeprotector with your cable equipment andelectronic devices.

WARNING:Electric shock hazard! Unplug allelectronic devices before connectingor disconnecting any device cables.

Connect the Entertainment Server to a Stereo TV and Stereo VCRTo listen to stereo sound, you must do one of thefollowing:• Connect stereo audio cables from the AUDIO

OUT LEFT and RIGHT connectors on theEntertainment Server to the AUDIO IN LEFTand RIGHT connectors on your stereo TV.

• Connect an RCA cable (not shown) from theDIGITAL AUDIO OUT on your Entertain-ment Server to the DIGITAL AUDIO IN onyour stereo receiver.

In addition, you may also connect an S-videocable from the S-VIDEO OUT connector on theEntertainment Server to the S-VIDEO connectoron the stereo TV or VCR. (This connection is notshown.) However, the S-video connection doesnot supply audio. You must also use audio cableswith the S-video cable.
