birdsandnearly290speciesofreptilesandamphibians.Theparkisasumptuous,extravagant,overwhelminglandscape.Theregionistraversedwithtapirs,14speciesofprimatesandcrownedbyflightsofscarletmacaws.Butterfliesareeverywhere;scarletknights,giantbluemorphosandtiny
transparentglasswings.Thistriphasseveralmajorwildlifeattractions;theMacawsaltlickandtheworld'sonlyknowTapirlickwhereinthecomfortofmattressesandmosquitonetswemaywatchthelargestofallSouthAmerican
landmammalsvisitaminerallick.Pluswe'llvisitOxbowLakeswithfloatingcatamaransforobservinggiantottersandotherlakesidewildlife.Twowalkupcanopytowerswillgetusupintotherainforestcanopyformorewildlifeobservation.
WewillhavedailywalksthroughthecloudandrainforestareasaswellastheopportunitytohikeupthemountainbehindtheAmazoniaLodgewherewewillbespendingtwonights.We'llhavethreenightsattheManuWildlifeCenterandtwofulldaystoexploretheforest,lakesand
trailsaroundlodge.Thereare30kilometersoftrailstohike!
ThistripisdesignedsothateveryonemayexperienceouradventureinthePeruthroughsharedparticipationinactivitiesandtasksinanorganizedgroupenvironment.AMCtravelersareknownfortheircooperativeefforts,andexpectationsarethatallparticipantswillbeconsiderateofotherssharingthisAMCAdventureTravelexperience.
Itmayhappenonanytripthatatripmemberisorbecomesunabletoparticipateinoneormoreoftheplannedactivities.Leadersintheirsolejudgmenthavetherightandobligationtorefuseparticipationinanyactivitytoanygroupmemberforreasonsofsafety,whetheritbeofthegrouporoftheindividual.Illness,injuryorlackofpropergearorfitnessforaparticularactivityareexamplesofsomeconditionsthatmightresultinaparticipant’sbeingunabletoperformoneormoreactivity.Leadersmaytrytofindasubstituteactivityforthetripmember,butthismaynotalwaysbepossible.
AMCAdventureTraveltripsareruninamannersupportiveofandconsistentwiththeconservation,recreationalandeducationalprinciplesandmissionoftheClub.TripleadersencourageparticipantconductconsistentwithLeaveNoTraceenvironmentalandconservationprinciplesandlocalregulations.

LeavingCuscoafterbreakfastwetravelthroughtraditionalQuechuacommunitiesandthroughthespectaculareasternrangesoftheAndestothevillageofPaucartambo,passingsnow-peaksandsmallAndeanfarmsteads.Wewillhavetimeheretolookaroundthepicturesquevillagewithitscolonialstonebridgeandhandsomeplaza.WethendescendtothelastpassoverlookingtheAmazonbasinandbeginthebreathtakingdescentfrom3500metersto1600metersabovesealeveltoourcomfortablelodgeintheorchidladenCloudForest.Thisisaspectacularjourneypassingcascadingwaterfallsandmulticoloredbirdsalongtheway.Inthelateafternoon,we’llwalkintothelodgetothesoundsofQuetzals,TrogonsandGray-breastedWoodWrens.OvernightattheCloudForestLodge.

AprebreakfastshortdrivetoanearbyspotintheCloudForest,wherethestrangeandbeautifulCock-of-the-Rock'sdisplayatdawn.Thisisawonderfulsight,asupto25brightred-orangemalesdanceandsing,attemptingtoattractthefavorsoftheduller,burgundycoloredfemales.Aftervisitingthislickarea,wereturntotheLodgeforaleisurelybreakfastandcontinueinourall-terrainbustoAmazoniaLodgewherewewillspendthenight.

WewillspendafulldaybasedatthecomfortableAmazoniaLodge.TheLodgeissituatedinthetransitionalzoneat500meters,wherethelastlowfoothillsoftheAndesbegintoflattenoutintothelowlandAmazonBasinproper.InthelodgegroundstherearebutterflybushesthatattractvarioushummingbirdspeciesincludingtheprettyRufouscrestedCoquette,GoldentailedSapphire,BluetailedEmerald,BlackEaredFairy,andWirecrestedThorntail,Koepcke'sHermitandmore.Fruitfeedershere
alsoattractavarietyofcolorfultanagersandalsoTaryas.Acanopytoweronthehillenablesustowatchandphotographcanopyfoothillflocks.Wewillvisitavarietyofhabitatsincludingfloodplainandhillforest.MammalswecouldencounterincludetroopsofBlackcappedSquirrelandBlackheadednightmonkeysandtheNeotropicalotter.
Wewillbereluctanttoleavethisveryphotogenicplace,butyetmoreawaitsusintheAmazonlowlands!ThosewantinghikingcanwalktheoldjeeptracktoAtalayaorthehilltrailtothemountaintopbehindtheLodge.OvernightwillbeatAmazoniaLodge.

AfteramorninghikeweembarkdowntheMadredeDiosRiverinourmotorizeddugoutsandbeginourjourneydowntheriver,throughthelastfoldsoftheAndestotheisolatedPantiacollarange.HeadingdowntheMadreDiosRiverafterbreakfast,we'llpasssettlementsandnativecommunitiesduringthetrip.JustbeforewegettothevillageofBocaManuwepassthenativecommunityofDiamante.TheircultureisPiroandthisisthelargestsettlementofAmerindiansinthearea.Weshouldarriveintimeforlunchandahotshowerandgettomeetwhicheverresearchersareonsite.Theafternoonissetasidetorelaxor,ifyouwant,toexplorethroughtheuntouchedforesttoacanopyplatformandanobservationtower.Thecanopyplatformisassessableviaaspiralstaircase.OneeveningthosewhowishcanparticipateinanightwalkwithourguideinsearchofnocturnalanimalsandvisittheTapirsaltlick.Tapirs,thelargestSouthAmericanlandmammalsarefrequentvisitorswithupto12animalsvisitinginonenight.Wewatchthemfromthecomfortofmosquitonetsandmattressesfromourspeciallyconstructedblind.Othernocturnalcreaturesarealwayspossible.Theadventurous,onconsultingwithourguideandAMCleaders,maypassthenighthereandwalkbacktothelodgeatdawnforbreakfast.

Wehavetwofulldaystoexploretheforest,lakesandtrailsaroundthelodge.Thereare30kilometersoftrailstohike.We'llexploretrailswheregroupsofManakins,perhapsthemostenigmaticofneo-tropicalbirds,performtheirstrangematingdances.WemaywanttoexploreatrailthroughtheuntouchedforesttoalookoutpointonacliffovertherivertowatchroostingflightsofparrotsandmacawsasthesunsetsexcursionforthosewhowishtothecanopytoweroralongtrailslookingforprimatessuchasEmperorandWendell'sSaddlebackTamarinsandtherecentlydescribedtoscienceUrubambaBrownTitimonkey,andtherareGoeldi'smonkeyhasbeenrepeatedlysightedinthearea.
Onemorningwe'llmakeanearlystartfortheBlanquilloMacawClayLick.Thisistrulyoneoftheworld'sgreat
wildlifespectaclesashundredsofparrotsandtheirlargerrelatives,themacaws,congregateatthistraditionallocalitytoeatthemineralrichclaythatisessentialtotheirdigestion.Mammalsalsousethisclaywallasasourceofneededantacids.Mammalssuchastapirs,redBrocketDer,ColombianHowlermonkeysalsousethearea.EatingtheclayneutralizesthepHoftheirGItractwhichhasbeenacidifiedasaconsequenceofeatinggreenfruitsaswellastoabsorbnutrientsfromtheclaywhicharenotfoundintheirdailydiet.Theobservationblind/platformallows
forextraordinaryphotosandduetoitspositioningallowsforsharppictureswhentheearlymorningsunilluminatestheclaylick.Aheartybreakfastisservedinthecomfortofthislocation.Toenter,youhavetoarriveearlyinthemorning(5:20am)andwalkforabouthalfanhourthroughatrailthatcrossessecondaryforest.Thenoisealoneisincredibleandthesightofthesebrightlycoloredbirdsatthelickisasightnottobeforgotten.Asthelickslowsdowninmidmorningwe'llheadbacktothelodgeforlunchandasiestainthehammockarraoftheroomycoolloungeareaofthelodge.We'llbeonthelookoutforGray'sBaldfacedSakiMonkey,anuncommonandrarelyseenmonkeyoftheterrafirmaforestthatisoccasionallyseenhere.
Onemorningwe'lltakeanexcursionforthosewhowish,toeitherthecanopytoweroralongtrailslookingforprimatesandthestrangePalewingedTrumpeterthathasbeensightedrepeatedlyinthisarea.We'llalsoheadtoeitherCochaBlancoorCochaCamungo,oldox-bowlakes,insearchoffamiliesofGiantOttersthatlivethere.We'llcanoearoundthelakeonourfloatingplatformlookingforotherwildlife,includingthebizarreHoatzin,BlackSpiderandCapuchinmonkeys.
Eachdaywewilltakeourleisurelylunchatthelodgewithtimetorelax.

Anearlymorningstartasflocksofbirdspassoverourboat,wemaygettoseeaCapybara,theworld'slargestrodent.OurdestinationisBocaColorado,afrontiergoldrushtown,wherewe'lltakelocaltransportforanhourtotheInambaririverandthenbypavedroadtoPuertoMoldonadoforafternoonflightsouttoLimaandthenontoUSA.
Leaders’righttochangeitinerary:
Whiletheitineraryinthisprospectusiswhattheleadershaveplannedatthetimeofwriting,variousfactorsmayrequirechangesforreasonsofsafety,transportationorlodgingavailability,andunforeseeablecircumstances(suchasweatherconsiderations,naturaldisastersinareastobevisited,orrecommendationsofgovernmentalagencies).Theleadersreservetherighttomakesuchchangesasnecessary,bothbeforeandduringthetrip.
Leaders’expectationsofparticipants:
Whenyouparticipateinthisactivity,youshouldbeinproperconditionforthechallengesoutlinedinthisprospectusandequippedwiththeappropriategearasstated.Youshouldalwaysbeawareoftherisksinvolvedandconductyourselfaccordingly.Youareultimatelyresponsibleforyourownsafety.Priortoyouracceptanceasaparticipantinthistrip,youwillbeaskedtodiscussyourcapabilitiesandexperienceswithus.Wemayalsorequestreferencestoconfirmyourfitnesslevelandsuitabilityforparticipatingintripactivities.
Thehikingpacewillbeatasteadypacethatallowsforphotographyandanenjoymentofoursurroundings;thisisapacethatwillbeusedoneverydayhike,forintermediateandadvancedintermediate.ItisthepaceusedbytheEuropeanAlpineGuides,whichtheyrecommendatthesealtitudesformaintainingstamina.
Weliketostopoccasionallytoenjoythemagnificentviews,lookforanimals,andadmirethewildflowersortakephotographs.Thedayhikeswillrangefromhoursinlength,withelevationchange(upsanddowns)varyingfrom
AMCAdventureTraveltripsareledbyvolunteersonanon-profitbasis.Anymoniesleftoveraftertripexpensesarecoveredwillberefundedtotheparticipants.Asleadersourgoalsforthegrouparetohavefun,stretchyourskills,andsavoraforeigncultureatreasonablecostandinthecompanyofotheradventurerswithsimilarinterests.Weencourageyourindividualcontributions,cooperationandgoodhumortoenrichthegroup’sexperience.Weexpectyoutoparticipateaspartofagroupandabidebytheleaders’decisions,andworktowardsthegrouphavingagoodtime.Bepreparedtohelpyourfellowhikersandspendtimewithotherparticipantsonthetrip.Indoingso,youwillenjoythetriptothemaximum.
COSTSCOVERED:
Pleasebeawarethat,inaccordancewithAMCpolicy,youaresubsidizingtheleaders'costs.Beyondthis,theleadersarenotallowedtorealizeanyprofitfromthisexcursion.ThetrippricealsoincludesanAMCoverheadfeetocovertheadministrativeexpensesofofferingAdventureTravelexcursions.Thetripfeeincludesemergencymedicalandevacuationinsurancecoverage,whichisrequiredbytheAMC.Itdoesnotincludeinsurancefortraveldelay,interruption,orcancellation,orforbaggageloss.Ifthesepossibilitiesconcernyou,individualtravelinsuranceisrecommended.Moreinformationaboutincludedemergencymedicalandevacuationinsurance,aswellasaboutoptionalandrecommendedtravelinsurance,willbeprovidedtoparticipantsintheirformalacceptanceletters.

CANCELLATIONPOLICY:
Ifyoucancelafterbeingacceptedforthetrip,$250isnon-refundable,butifyoucancelafterSept1,2017minimally$500isnonrefundable,if(andonlyif)anotherpersontakesyourplace.Wewillestablishawaitinglist.Shouldanotherpersonreplaceyou,youwillbechargedonlythe$500cancellationfee.However,yourcancellationshallnotraisethecostofthetriptoanyoftheparticipantsortheleaders.Thus,ifyoucancelandarenotreplaced,youwillforfeitthe$500plusthepercapitaexpensesalreadyincurredandanyotherunpaidexpensesforwhichthetripcannotobtainarefund.Youmayforfeittheentiretripfee.Flightticketsoncepurchasedbecomeyourpropertyandaregenerallynon-refundable.Westronglyrecommendthatyoupurchasetravelinsurance.InformationonacompanyrecommendedbytheAMCwillbesenttoyou.

For this trip we estimate a range of $1500-1750. We will assist you in any way to make yourreservations,butyoushouldnotmakeanybookingonyourownwithoutconsultingtheleaders.Wewillnotify you with a list of acceptable flights once we know that we have a confirmed trip. Once youpurchasetickets,theyarewhollyownedbyyou.
FLIGHTS:Werecommendthatyoureserveflightsdirectlyontheairlines'websites.FlightsshouldarriveinCusco,Peruno later thanApril 8th, 2018. Flights home fromPeurtoMoldanado shouldnot be scheduled todepartpriorto1pmonApril16th,2018.
