THE WONDER OF MUSICA MUSICAL REVUE CELEBRATING THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC IN OUR LIVES
By John Jacobson and Lynn BrinckmeyerWho are the best advocates for your school’s music programs? The kids! And, kids can expertly share the joy of music making and learning in a variety of different ways. Chapter 1: Decision Making from the Wonder of MUSICBy John Jacobson and Lynn Brinckmeyer
Copyright © 2018 by HAL LEONARD LLCInternational Copyright Secured All Rights Reserved
Dear Music Students,
Participating in music class requires making many decisions every second. Some of the choices seem very simple, some are quite complicated. For instance, you have to decide when to play or sing and when not to. You have to ask yourself “Do I play or sing loudly or softly?” “Am I the melody or the harmony?” “Is that symbol a flat or a sharp?” and so on. Just like in the music classroom, your life is full of choices. The decisions you make every day will determine whether or not we have a world that is out of tune or is filled with harmony. If we take the same approach to our lives as we take in making music with our friends, we have a chance to keep this world as lovely as a song.
Things for Kids to Think AboutEncourage students to think about the starter phrases listed below. Invite them to write a paragraph in which they demonstrate how music making develops their decision-making skills.
• When I am in music class, I make constant decisions about …
• The most challenging decision I have ever made in music class was …

TEACHER ENDORSEMENT FOR VOLUME 1Thank you for writing such an accessible and meaningful (and fun!) curriculum. This is my 7th year teaching elementary general music and this is the first year that I have ever included jazz instruction in my teaching because I never knew how to present it. You have really done us (teachers) such a service and I can’t wait to share more of these lessons with my students!

Formation: Circle, seated, with one child in the center. The player in the center hides his eyes; players in the ring pass the button from one to another by “palming” it from hand to hand, with left hand up and right and down. Players alternate between clapping their hands together, then reaching out to slip the button into their neighbors’ hands. At “bright eyes will find you,” the center player opens his eyes, and at the end of the song, tries to guess who is holding the button.
