CHINESE BEAUTY

EXPRESSIONS 3

MeMbers of The LLadró GoLd CLub have a reason to celebrate, because the club that brings together Lladró’s best customers is launching one of its most elegant limited editions. Created with profound symbolism, Chinese beauty is one of those pieces whose realism and sophistication are sure to cause a sensation.Dressed for a special ceremony, everything about this young Chinese woman is carefully studied and depicted. The floral headdress in the purest oriental style; her face, with its perfectly defined features, accentuated by the delicate make-up; and, as expected, the dress is another focus of attention in the piece. With its folds, its pleats and fall, it almost seems as if it were made with real Chinese silk. In addition, it also features two very positive elements from oriental philosophy, reproduced in soft enamel tones: the lotus flower, a symbol of purity, and the copper coin, which represents good luck. Everything is made and decorated by hand by Lladró’s team of expert artists. An exclusive premiere option on a piece from this limited edition is one of the advantages of membership of Lladró Gold Club, an online site which offers its members direct personalized communication via e-mail and on www.lladrogold.com. If you are still not a member of this exclusive club, please go to www.lladrogold.com to learn how to enroll and make the most of all its benefits.

Eternal Lladró

Juan Lladró gives us a fresh insight into the brand’s

collection of historical porcelain, casting a look back to

three pieces related to the works of William Shakespeare

which were hugely successful in their day. Classic in form,

meticulous in finishing with abundant tones and nuances,

they are part of the group of figurines that Lladró has

dedicated to the great geniuses of the arts.Juan Lladró

Cervantes, El Greco, Mozart… Lladró has borrowed its inspiration from the great names of literature, art and music from history in order to give life to figurines that are universal symbols. Today, together with Juan Lladró, we will take a look at the work of William Shakespeare and some of his most famous characters in three of the pieces the brand has dedicated to the great English playwright.

Belonging to the historical porcelain collection at the Lladró Museum, Hamlet, Othello and Desdemona and Lovers from Verona are part of this group of pieces that, in the words of the brand’s founder, “have left a mark on the catalogue thanks to the precision in the composition, the profound significance and the plethora of details”. It is no accident that these figurines reaped such extraordinary popularity and success. In the case of the first two, dating from 1971, they were among the brand’s first limited edition pieces. Limited to 750 pieces each, the editions sold out in little more than six months. In fact, this was Lladró’s initiation into works created in limited series, so highly appreciated in the fine arts.

The Danish prince and his “to be or not to be”, Othello and his uncontrollable jealousy, or Romeo and Juliet and their impossible love have gone on to become part of the world’s collective consciousness. Lladró has immortali-zed them for ever in porcelain in pieces that, as Juan Lladró points out, “make us feel proud that they have come from our workshops”. He is referring especially to the limited editions which are so highly valued and appreciated by the brand’s major collectors by virtue of their short numbers. In point of fact, the founder of Lladró has a message for their owners: “everyone who has one of these works in their home should know that they possess one of the pieces we call special”.

SuRROuNDING ourselves with dreams, living with our hopes and wishes … this is one of the challenges of Lladró porcelain. That is why, over and above their decorative qualities, Lladró pieces are a reflection of our desires. And a good example are the creations in this first launch of new issues for 2012, led by the Auspicious Dragon which, according to the

Chinese horoscope, will bring us good luck this year. Both artistically and technically speaking, it is a highly complex creation. Also available is a version in green which is one of the four spiritual creatures of Feng Shui, the oriental philosophy of harmony, and a powerful symbol of prosperity. In addition to these striking dragons, in this

latest launch Lladró is also presenting some delightful, charming pieces such as a select group of motherhood creations in a variety of finishes and textures. New introductions featuring exuberant limited editions alongside pieces with synthesized forms and vases that bring spring into our homes. The Lladró you’ve come to expect, but like never before.

Unconditional loveA mother's love for her children is probably the most unconditional love of all. A sentiment to which Lladró has dedicated a large number of pieces with which to celebrate and give thanks for a bond that lasts a lifetime. In this regard, the first issues for 2012 include motherhood scenes that combine delicacy and earthliness, sobriety and elegance. Despite varying in forms and finishes, they all give pride of place to tender emotions.

In these pieces, the artists at The City of Porcelain demonstrate a wide variety of decorative techniques, ranging from the classical style of Mommy's little girl, made in gloss porcelain with the soft coloring typical of the Lladró palette, to the sobriety of Expecting, made in matte porcelain decorated completely in white. Lladró has also created mother-and-child scenes in gres, an ideal material for reproducing these heartfelt emotions and transmitting all the warmth and feeling of the tightest hug.

The SpiriT of indiAThe exuberant iconography of India is also on show in Lladró’s new issues, featuring the prolific decoration of the limited edition Rama and Sita and the exquisitely finished Padmasana Ganesha. Pieces that are true gems in their own right while at the same time conveying universal values.

The anCienT Sanskrit epic Ramayana tells how the god Vishnu was incarnated in King Rama in order to put an end to evil on Earth. His beloved and faithful wife, Sita, was his lifelong companion throughout an existence plagued with moments of separation and desperation which nevertheless were never able to destroy a couple who are the symbol of happiness in the home. Lladró has rendered this story of love in porcelain in the new limited edition Rama and Sita, the couple at the centre of a scene that will shortly be joined by two more figurines: Laksmana and Hanuman. Taken together they form the Rama Darbar: four key characters in the cultural consciousness of India and the heroes of the great Sanskrit epics.

And if the theme in itself is highly evocative, no less so is the abundant decoration of this new limited edition. Its intense reds, oranges and blues, new greens and attractive pinks all pay tribute to the bright coloring of India. This is added to the painstaking ornamentation in the details of the rich clothing and attributes of Rama: the bow and arrows, the garlands of flowers, the necklaces, bracelets and headdress. The decoration is rounded off by the fine lines of the subtle make-up which underscores the features of both faces and accentuates the depth of the gazes that transmit universal values such as harmony and inner peace.

This same serenity is also on view in Padmasana Ganesha, a new representation of the Hindu god of knowledge which is a true gem in itself. Seated on a large lotus flower, the “eliminator of obstacles” gives us the gift of his mystic gaze full of wisdom. An exquisite piece with a profound symbolism and all the decorative power of the rich Hindu iconography.

introducing The Guest, the most groundbreaking character to come

from Lladró Atelier

The brand’s laboratory of ideas has undertaken a new creative adventure and the result is a surprising, captivating and unique character called The Guest. Conceived by Jaime Hayon for Lladró Atelier, The Guest is an ongoing project that invites cutting-edge artists from around the world to create a distinctive personality for an original porcelain character.

This initiative fits in perfectly with the founding principles of Lladró Atelier, the studio set aside for pure creativity from the brand’s in-house designers and external artists who bring new ideas to the world of porcelain. This project is a platform where artists from various different disciplines work alongside Lladró, which puts all its potential at the service of creativity.

The outcome of this joint endeavor can be seen in the first pieces from the collection. Three Guests, each one in two sizes, the larger one a limited edition of 250 units and the smaller one a numbered edition.

Six spectacular creations that capture the particular world of each collaborating artist: Jaime Hayon, the American artist Tim Biskup and the Japanese studio Devilrobots.

Like all Lladró works, the Guests are also handcrafted

in the brand’s workshops in Valencia following a completely artisanal process. The technical expertise of the team at the workshop combined with the hand in hand work with the invited artists has resulted in a series of pieces that are as elegant as they are amusing, unique and groundbreaking.

This young couple about to get married purchased the essence of life at the event in Singapore.

ÁNGELES LLADRó traveled for the first time to Singapore and Indonesia for a signing tour from September 18th through September 25th. During the weeklong program of events Juan Lladró’s daughter presented Guardian Lions from the High Porcelain collection to a large number of enthusiastic lovers of the brand who showed up to meet Ángeles and have her sign their favorite piece. The tour got off to a start at the Lladró Boutique in the busy Paragon shopping mall in Singapore, where Ángeles held a press conference with the country’s leading media, which soon reported on her visit to the country. Today, Singapore’s biggest selling daily newspaper, gave wide coverage to the event. After the journalists it was the turn of the brand’s faithful collectors, who jumped at the chance to meet Ángeles. Not even the new Spanish ambassador in Singapore, Federico Palomera Güez, wished to miss the event. The second part of the tour took Ángeles to Indonesia where she received a very warm welcome. She had a chance to visit the Borobudur temple in Yogyakarta between signing events. This first time visit to these countries produced many memorable moments. For example Ángeles met a Lladró fan who attended the event with Little pals, the very first piece from the Lladró Collectors Society launched in 1985. Ángeles also had the opportunity to meet the woman who inherited a collection of pieces from her mother which she treasures dearly because, for her, it is a way of keeping her mother’s memory alive. After the intense tour, Ángeles Lladró traveled to India to present the new creation Rama and Sita to a select group of important publications in economics, interior design and lifestyle. This limited edition of 1800 units represents the Hindu god Rama and his wife Sita, venerated in India as the perfect couple. The meeting with the journalists took place at the Lladró Boutique in Gurgaon, decorated especially for the occasion to receive Ángeles and these pieces, which guarantee happiness in the home.

ROSA LLADRó toured several countries this fall with the piece Passionate Tango. Together they raised many passions among the many attendants at the events. From October 12th through October 23rd, the President of the company traveled to the USA and Canada to present this limited edition of 3000 units, first at the Lladró Boutique in New York and then at several authorized retailers in the states of Maryland, Illinois, Nevada and California, as well as in Ontario, Canada.

The warm reception from the many guests was accompanied at some of these events with a live performance from professional tango dancers. In New York, the instructors from the Triangulo dance studio Carina Moeller and Dante Polichetti gave a first-rate demonstration of their art, while at the Lladró Boutique in Beverly Hills it was Naomi Hotta and Salvatore Plano who provided the rhythm to the evening. These exciting events gave guests a chance to take home Passionate Tango signed by Rosa Lladró.

The piece achieved similar success in Azerbaijan, during its presentation at the end of October, first at a meeting with collectors at the Lladró Boutique in Baku, the country’s capital city, and then at an event at the International Mugham Center which was attended by around 350 guests. At this museum and auditorium dedicated to promoting traditional mugham music and recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Rosa Lladró presented Passionate Tango alongside other new issues from the brand and pieces from the High Porcelain collection.

Art and multiculturalism provided a backdrop for a meeting which brought together mugham music, Spanish music provided by a flamenco quartet featuring the country’s best guitarist, Chingiz Mustafayev, and, of course, a live tango performance. The costumes of the dancers, their poses, balance and precision brought to mind the couple in Passionate Tango, making it look like the piece had come to life.

Exhibition of Lladró ballet pieces at the Bolshoi Theater in MoscowLAST OCTOBER, Lladró’s ballerinas made their debut at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. This temple of European dance recently reopened after a complicated refurbishment process that lasted six years. In fact, the Lladró works played a major role at the Bolshoi’s reopening gala, and was the first stopover on a touring exhibition of a selection of Lladró pieces devoted to dance -mostly coming from the Lladró Museum- that remained on view until December 10th in the spectacular lobby of the palace of Russian ballet.

During November, Rosa Lladró traveled to Moscow to take part in an event organized to tie in with the exhibition. The evening opened with a performance of The Sleeping Beauty by the Bolshoi Ballet, the world’s largest ballet company, followed by a cocktail party that attracted leading Russian celebrities and socialites such as the ballerina Ilze Liepa and her brother, the choreographer Andris Liepa, Baroness Katerina von Gechmen-Valdek, the TV presenter Arina Sharapova, the photographer Ekaterina Rozhdestvenskaya and Tatiana Mikhalkova, Chair of the Silhouette Foundation. The Spanish Ambassador in Moscow, Luis Felipe Fernández de la Peña, was also in attendance.

Two special editions of The Spirit of Dance were presented during the evening, one to the theater director Anatoly Iksanov and the other to the prestigious ballerina Ilze Liepa. A small number of pieces from this series were created with a special decoration exclusively made to commemorate the touring exhibition, wich travels to other major theaters and operas including the National Opera of Ukraine, in Kiev.

Rosa Lladró traveled to New York on November 30th, and visited the home in the company of Iris Dankner, founder of the event. LLADRó CREATIONS were a source of inspiration at Designer Visions Cinema Style and at the Unici Casa event, two interior design exhibitions held in New York City and Los Angeles respectively. The fifth Designer Visions took place last October, in a luxurious home at 1212 Fifth Avenue. Promoted by the Hearst Magazine Group, this annual event is based on the image of the Big Apple as a backdrop for some of the most stylish movies in the history of cinema. With this film-loving inspiration, the celebrated interior designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller used Lladró pieces from the Naturofantastic, Rococo Mirrors and The Parrot Party collections to create attractive interiors reminiscent of the style of Igby Goes Down, a film directed by Burr Steers in 2002. Rosa Lladró visited the venue and looked around its rooms in the company of Mara Miller.Porcelain was also the focus of attention at the Unici Casa exhibition, a very special event held in November which announced a collaboration agreement with Lladró. The event, showcasing designs by the most prestigious international brands, premiered a new space in Casa Bianca, the perfect venue to present the new pieces from the Naturofantastic collection to over 500 guests. The occasion ended up as a highly entertaining evening with a Spanish flavor and several performances, including a flamenco show to celebrate the new association with Lladró. From now on, the brand will have its own permanent space in Unici Casa, a mecca for cutting-edge design in Los Angeles.

The art of Lladró sculptors seduces Asia

ONCE AGAIN, the Lladró sculptors sensed the expectation aroused among the brand’s lovers at the prospect of witnessing the birth of a piece. This time, it was up to Ernest Massuet and Raúl Rubio to travel several Asian and Pacific countries to display their art to a particularly enthusiastic audience.Ernest Massuet toured China, Philippines and New Zealand last fall to perform in events featuring Cherub of love and the horses from At the Derby. The sculptor, a horse enthusiast himself, traveled to the cities of Beijing, Qingdao, Hong Kong, Manila, Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland and Rotorua during the 22-day tour. The large number of attendees at the events held in China were in agreement that his work in molding horses is a "superb depiction of movement and expression". In turn, the fans in the Philippines welcomed him with the hospitality the country is so well known for. There, Ernest modeled a charming cherub in front of more than 200 guests who attended for an event organized under the auspices of the Garcías, a family who have been collaborating with Lladró for over twenty years. The intense tour ended in New Zealand, which gave the sculptor the opportunity to acquaint himself with various cultures and to receive the gratitude of different cultures.

Raúl Rubio toured Japan last October on a journey that also left him with many memorable images. The followers of the brand in Hamamatsu, Osaka, Tokyo and Yokkaichi enjoyed seeing Raúl give a live demonstration of modeling. The piece he created was Warrior boy, a symbol of courage and determination that is used by Japanese people to celebrate Children`s Day every May, to ask for good health for their young ones. The occasion to have a close-up view of his reliefs and every detail of its decoration was a gift for the large number of Japanese public attending the events. Raúl made the most of the chance to speak to them and to discover the story behind each purchase of a Lladró piece.
