ExtendedEssay-Reflection• Reflectionintheextendedessayfocusesonthestudent’sprogressduringtheplanning,researchandwritingprocess.Itisintendedtohelpstudentswiththedevelopmentoftheir

extendedessayaswellasallowingthemtheopportunitytoconsidertheeffectivenessoftheir

choices,tore-examinetheirideasandtodecidewhetherchangesareneeded.

ExtendedEssay-FormatTheextendedessayshouldbewritteninaclear,correctandformalacademicstyle,appropriatetothesubjectfromwhichthetopicisdrawn.Giventhattheextendedessayisaformallywrittenresearchpaper,itshouldstrivetomaintainaprofessional,academiclook.Tohelpachievethis,thefollowingformattingisrequired:•theuseof12-point,readablefont•doublespacing•pagenumbering•nocandidateorschoolnameonthetitlepageorpageheaders.Submittingtheextendedessayintherequiredformatwillhelpsetthetoneoftheessayandwillaidreadabilityforon-screenassessmentbyexaminers.WordcountsTheupperlimitis4,000wordsforallextendedessays.

ExtendedEssayAcademichonesty

Researchpracticeswhenworkingonanextendedessaymustreflecttheprinciplesofacademichonesty.Theessaymustprovidethereaderwiththeprecisesourcesofquotations,ideasandpointsofviewthroughaccuratecitations,whichmaybein-textorfootnotes,andfullreferenceslistedinthebibliography,which,regardlessofthesystemused,mustensuretheminimumrequirements.Producingaccuratereferencesandabibliographyisaskillthatstudentsshouldbeseekingtorefineaspartoftheextendedessaywritingprocess.Documentingtheresearchinthiswayisvital:itallowsreaderstoevaluatetheevidenceforthemselves,anditshowsthestudent’sunderstandingoftheimportanceofthesourcesused.
