How to…• eliminate the need of wash-ups during a job

changeover?• minimize the quantiy of ink losses?• reduce the handling of ink containers

around the press?• reduce the quantity of inks inhouse and its

storage?• eliminate the need for colour matching on

the press – only density adjustments?

Costs and Production advantages

The advantages are obvious:

Orders are getting shorter and shorter:When using spot colour systems, the proportion of residual colours in the total printing production is then proportionally increasing

► No residual colours with 7C

05.11.2019 6/18

No colour adjustments on the press:Standardized and very exact colour definitions in 7C leading to reduce colour matching at job start-up using mono-pigmented inks

► Several hundred meters of waste at start-up can be saved

Which issues are limiting its deployment?

Colour Consistency:-> Always transfer the same amount of ink and colour density

(Density variations in spot colours barely visible but with 7C there are more distinct colour deviations)

Possible sources of density variation: Ink viscosity and temperature Transfer volume through drying cylinder’s cells Print-out e.g. doctor blade wear or cylinder wear Surface roughness of the film

Actually easier to control in roto gravure printing than in flexographic printing!

EXTRUSION | PRINTING | CONVERTING

Which issues are limiting its deployment?Register behaviour:

Exact position of the colour spots (small fonts with spot colours are much less error prone to register fluctuation)

Today's usual register of +/- 75μm is generally too much.

05.11.2019 10/18

Target +/- 35 to 40μm max. similar to CI flexo printing Possible sources of register fluctuation:

register controller Substrate properties: (inhomogeneity, modulus of

elasticity dep. temperature) Web guiding through the whole printing press the main issue in gravure presses

EXTRUSION | PRINTING | CONVERTING

Which issues are limiting its deployment?Colours printed on top of each other in the same or similar angle will create a moiré effectElectromechanical engraving provides only 4 different angles

Good pre-press know-how is necessary (moiré, right tone…) Additional posibilities using laser engraving

How do I get the assurance that my machine and my process are good enough to talk to the brand owner about getting started in 7C?

Machine must be specified for highest register quality

Monitoring actual print jobs with a view to consistency. Primarily register but also material quality.

How do I get started?
