The Eagle NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2012 TEXT

Empowered by God’s Spirit! “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them

in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7).

Let me tell you about Grover. Grover was a member of the first congregation I served. Grover was retired, had lost his wife several years before, and now spent most days sitting at the bar of the local VFW visiting with whoever happened to sit next to him. He went there day after day not so much to drink, but rather for the companionship that it brought.

When our congregation needed someone to deliver the cassette tapes of our Sunday church services to our shut-ins each Monday morning, I immediately thought of Grover. He was kind and gentle-spirited and would love having something to help him pass his time. Grover quickly agreed and each Monday morning would stop by my office to pick up that week’s tapes before delivering them to our dozen or so shut-ins. The shut-ins looked forward to Grover’s weekly visits and Grover looked forward to his new Monday ministry.

About a month or so after Grover began his Monday ministry, he came into my office and said, “Pastor, I am really enjoying delivering the tapes each Monday. But, I really think what these folks need more than the tapes is someone to sit and visit with them. Would it be okay if, when I take them their tapes, I stay and visit with them for a while?” Smiling from ear to ear, I answered, “Absolutely! I think that would be wonderful.” Soon, Monday’s weren’t long enough for Grover to deliver all of his tapes. Instead of complaining, Grover simply added Tuesday!

Another month or so passed and Grover stopped by office again. “Pastor,” he began, “I’m really enjoying visiting with our shut-ins. Now, I don’t want to step on your toes, but, if it’s alright with you, I’d like to start sharing a prayer with them before I leave. With your permission, would that be okay?” Again, smiling from ear to ear and laughing with delight on the inside, I again answered, “Absolutely, Grover! I think that would be wonderful.” Grover had discovered his God-given ministry! God had unleashed the power of the Spirit in Grover’s life! And, Grover and our shut-ins were filled with great joy!

Empowered by God’s Spirit! That is our congregation’s theme for 2013. As St. Paul writes in his first letter to the early Christians living in Corinth, each and every one of us has been empowered and equipped by the Spirit with unique gifts and talents for ministry. For some, it’s the gift of teaching. For some, it’s the gift of music. For some, it’s the gift of prayer. For some, it’s the gift of plumbing, or electrical work, or construction. For Claire, featured on the front page of this month’s Eagle, it’s the gift of joy-filled hospitality. Each of us has been gifted by God’s Holy Spirit with something unique. The key is discovering how to use that unique gift in ministry that is rewarding both to others and to ourselves. The key is sharing our unique gift with others in the name of Jesus.

As each of us prepares once again to make our resolutions for the coming year, I encourage you to make one of your resolutions for the new year finding a way to use your unique God-given gifts in ministry to others so that, through our varied ministries, others might come to see and know the light of Christ shining in the darkness of the world around us. Each weekend during 2013, we will be closing each worship service with the following prayer. I invite you to learn this prayer, memorize it, make it your own, and invite God’s Holy Spirit to open you up for Christ’s ministry. Just imagine what God might do through you ...

Creative God, empower us by your Holy Spirit to discover our God-given gifts and open our eyes, ears, and hearts to the possibilities you give us to use our unique gifts in ministry to you and to one another, for the sake of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen Making disciples,

Pastor Greg Busboom

Epiphany - “a manifestation or revealing” - Epiphany is the season of the church year in which it is revealed, or made clear, who the Christ-child is, the Messiah, the Son of God, the Light of the World.

Chancel ChoirGood Friday Cantata rehearsals will begin on Sunday, January 27 at 9:15 a.m. in the Music Room. Please come and join the Chancel Choir as they prepare for the cantata which will be presented on Friday, March 29. If you have any questions, please contact Jill Gum, Chancel Choir Director, [email protected].

Worship Moment“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” (Luke 2:14). We join our voices with the voices of the angels every time we sing the hymn of praise, “Glory to God,” in worship. This canticle of praise is the traditional canticle of praise for all Sundays and festivals and is especially suitable during Christmas and the time after Epiphany. Traditionally, the canticle of praise is not sung during Advent and Lent. “Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth!” Glory to the newborn king!

The Eagle NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2012 CHILDREN & FAMILY

Puzzling over what makes a family strong? If you think it only involves children’s programming, you’re missing an important piece to the puzzle. Read on to find out what some of our St. John’s families have discovered. From Greg and Alicia Huntley:

“We spend a lot of time focusing on our kids’ spirituality and ensuring that their cups are filled, but we know that we can’t lose sight of our own walk with faith. Being part of our Parents in Christ small group has really helped us keep God at our side as we take this parental journey. It is very comforting to know that we are not alone as we raise our children, and it is great to have support and even advice from the other parents in our group as we all go through it together! We feel that it is important to show our kids that Bible study is very important to us. They see this when we meet, but also as we study on our own and practice the parenting methods that we learn along the way. As a bonus, the kids love their small group friends (and Miss Lori, who takes such good care of them!), and they look forward to our Sunday nights together too!”

POPS (Parents of Preschoolers): We will restart in January! Mark your calendars for Monday, January 7 at 9 a.m. in the choir room. We are discussing a book written by Jen Hatmaker: Out of the Spin Cycle: Devotions to Lighten Your Mother Load.

Picture on Right: St. John’s children sharing “The Christmas Cupcake” and reminding all of us that Jesus is the sweetest gift ever!

Picture on Far Right: One of our St. John’s kids summed up the night of Christmas caroling in our church neighborhood like this: “It’s like trick or treating except we go to the house and give!”

Learning Luke: The Apostolic gospelBeginning Sunday, January 6, Pastor Greg will lead an in-depth 12-week study of the Gospel of Luke during the Adult Forum each Sunday morning from 9:20-10:15 in the Adult Meeting Room. Learning Luke features weekly video presentations by Dr. David Tiede, Professor of Religion and Vocation at Augsburg College and former President and Professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary, followed by engaging and informative discussion led by Pastor Greg.

Exploring how God calls the church into a new era of apostolic mission, the sessions are designed to appreciate Luke’s unique telling of the story of Jesus, to mark how deeply Luke’s account is grounded in the scriptures of Israel, and to learn from the evangelist’s conviction that God’s Messiah is alive. Jesus turned his disciples into apostles to carry the word and work of his reign into the world God so loves. Learning Luke could have a similar effect for you.

Upcoming sessions include:• Sunday, January 6 - Luke 2:1-20• Sunday, January 13 - Luke 2:21-40• Sunday, January 20 - Annual Meeting Info Forum• Sunday, January 27 - Luke 4:14-30Come and learn how you are part of God’s mission in the world!

Wanted Home Repair VolunteersThe Home Repair ChristCare small group is looking for a few good men who have home repair skills in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing. The group was formed in 2010 to assist St. John’s Lutheran Church members and those in the greater Springfield community with minor home repairs, yard work, and other home services that individuals find they can no longer accomplish themselves or can’t find or afford a contractor to perform. The group meets the first Monday evening of each month for 90 minutes of devotions/bible study, fellowship, and to plan home repair requests received. On the third Saturday of each month, the members divide up in teams to complete the 1-4 hour project requests.

In addition to the above, this group’s purpose is to know God better through Biblical Equipping, prayer, and living Christ’s love for one another. It seeks to equip group members to reach out with Christ’s love by using their God given skills to serve others outside the group. If you have been looking for a way to serve Christ and this group sounds like a good fit for you or you wish to find out more about the group, please contact Jim Sanders at (217) 726-5230.

The Joy of giving: A StoryYear after year, Erik and Tracy sat in the pew listening to their pastor preach about the spiritual practice of tithing, giving a first portion of one’s income, to God in grateful response for all that God has first done for us. Erik and Tracy always thought it sounded like a good idea, but as newlyweds looking to start a family, they kept putting it off, thinking that tithing was probably easier for older saints in the church than it would be for them. Then, one New’s Year Day, as Erik and Tracy talked about their resolutions for the coming year, they decided to give it a try. They weren’t able to start out at the Biblical level of 10%, but they decided they could start out at 3% of their income. Together, their annual income was $58,000, 3% of which was $1,740, making their weekly offering to the church $33, an amount significantly higher than the $5 per week they had been throwing in the offering plate previously As they talked, they decided it would be just as easy for them to live on $56,260 as it was for them to live on $58,000 a year and, more importantly, they would know that they were giving a first-fruits gift to God in thanksgiving for their many blessings. After a month had passed, Erik and Tracy shared with each other and with their pastor that for the first time in their lives, they were finding joy in their giving. In fact, they even looked forward to when they could place that $33 check in the offering plate each week. As the amount of Erik and Tracy’s faith-filled giving grew, so did the joy they found in it. This was one New Year’s Resolution they knew they would keep!

“You shall love the Lord your god with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38).
