ZOOLOGY
Department of Zoology has adopted Marudhangudi village near Pillaiyar patty. We
have tie up with an NGO namely “FORD” Trust. Along them every year we are spending
one week for saplings plantation and maintenance with tree guard. We are giving training
to Self Help Group about importance of locally available medicinal plants and preparation
of herbal medicine. We are conducting motivational classes to the village students towards
the importance of education. Awareness campaign is regularly conducted onself hygiene
and sanitation. Village peoples are oriented with the importance and methods of rain water
harvesting. Training is given to the farmers in the field for coconut pest control using
pheromone trap. Village peoples are trained to prepare mosquito repellents from locally
available botanicals .43 Second B.Sc. Zoology Students and Faculty members have
implemented extension activities in Maruthangudi village on 26.10.14 and 27.10.14. They
have planted trees in the villages and done bush clearance. They also created awareness on
biological pest control in coconut to the farmers and demonstrated pheromone traps.

Department of Physics, through its extension activity programme, conducts tree
plantation programme in its adopted village Kottaiyeruppu near Tiruppattur, Sivagangai
district. As per the Alagappa University guidelines, extension activity programme should
be conducted on any two days, preferably Saturday and Sunday, during the third semester
of the UG course. Variety of programs, which also includes saplings plantations, was
conducted during this extension activity. All the thirty nine II B.Sc., students were taken to
the Kottaiyeruppu village on 11th
and 12th
October 2014 along with staff members of
Physics department. Students planted various varieties of saplings such as neem, banyan,
peepal, guava etc., in and around of Kottaiyeruppu village. The saplings, which will grow
as trees with time, gives numerous benefits to the human beings such as oxygen for
breathing, reduces erosion of soil and pollutions in waterways and also as shelter to
variety of birds. Inculcating the habit of sapling plantation in the students mind will also
help to reduce the effect of global warming in our universe.

Extension activity provides a link between the College and the Society. In
order to create socially sensitive citizens, the second year students are made aware
of the common extension activities through department specific extension activities
during the Induction Programme at the commencement of each academic year.
Staff members and students of all the departments of Arumugam Pillai Seethai
Ammal College, Tiruppattur adopted villages, in an endeavor to carry out welfare
measures to the people of surrounding villages.
Department of History carried out two day extension activity at
Tiruthalinathar temple at Tiruppattur on 11th
and 12th
October, 2014. In the
programme 29 students effectively participated with the social view and voluntarily
involved in cleaning the temple campus. On the first day we conducted
environmental programme in which we cleaned the second circle of the
Thiruthalinathar temple, Tiruppattur. So, the devotees of the town can have clean
and green environment which help them to concentrate in their prayers. In the
programme 16 boys 13 girls voluntarily involved cleaning every part of the temple.
Besides our students insisted the public how to maintain cleanliness in and around
temple and how to minimize the garbage produced during the distribution of holy
food in the temple.
On the second day we conducted green initiative programme in which we
planted several type of saplings in Thiruppattur especially in Temples and schools.
Our second year student’s actively participated in the programme. We have planted
various plants like Neem tree, Peepal tree, Sale, Gulmohar, Ashoka, blue berry,
banyan tree etc. So, the peoples may use the fruits and nuts for their livelihood. Our

Activity 2014-15 44
Department of Computer Science, Arumugam Pillai Seethai Ammal College, Tiruppattur,
in an endeavour to carry out welfare measures to the people of surrounding villages, pursue
extension activities. Department of Computer Science has conducted an extension activities at
Thiruvudaiyar patti, a village near Tiruppattur on 18th October 2014. In the programme eleven
boys and thirty three girls of our department effectively participated with the involvement.
Tree plantation is good for the environment. Everyone knows that trees are the source of
oxygen. They inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen without which the survival of living beings
is not possible on earth. Trees also provide us with many benefits necessary for survival, including
clean air, filtered water, shade, and food. On the request of the vice-president of the village,
Pungai tree plantation around the grave yard was carried on by our students.
In the afternoon, students distributed the notice door by door to the village people about
the symptoms and prevention measures taken for Dengu fever. The disease has a sudden onset
and symptoms may include fever for 3 to 7 days, intense headache and pain behind the eyes,
muscle and joint pain, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea, skin rash bleeding, usually from
the nose or gums. Personal protection and the environmental management of mosquitoes are
important in preventing illness and also Prevent access of mosquitoes to an infected person with
a fever. The students are quite interested in doing good things to the people and they were
motivated by the joy and kindness of the village people shown to them.
