4-H highlights from Marna:

As I prepare this last Extension Connection Article before I retire from 4-H, I have been reflecting on my work here over the last 16+ years from the perspective of the H! Heroes: There are so many great people that make the 4-H program happen! Many thanks to the very important 70 to 80 screened adult volunteers that sign–up every year to help. They are the Club Managers and Assistants, Project Leaders, Committee members (Animal Science and others), and chaperones for overnight events. Thanks to parents for supporting their youth in 4-H and thank you to the youth members for using their creativity and broadening their horizons! Other heroes are Extension Staff, the County Extension Committee and Carlton County. Hoops: Yep, making hoops (like the hula hoop) was one of my favorite hands-on things to do. There are probably 400 additional hoops in this region due to 4-H! Making your own hoop is so easy! Use 3/4inch flexible plastic tubing, a coupler and colorful electrical tape to decorate it just the way you want. You can hoop solo or do a bunch of group hoop games! Hilarity: One of the most hilarious times was when I did a session with youth (grades 2-5) on world nutrition and talked about how many people in the world eat rice and beans. To reinforce the idea of beans being a great source of protein I asked the group "what do beans give you" – my worst question ever! I got every possible answer out there related to flatulence and soon had kids rolling on the floor they were laughing so hard! When I regained my composure and told them the correct answer was protein, they all started laughing again! Hiccups: There have been a few hiccups along the way when things don’t go as planned, but we are fortunate there were no serious, long-term consequences. Safety of everyone is important in 4-H. Once in the 4-H diner, the small water pipe that went to the ice cream counter broke and water was spraying all over. Quick thinking volunteers grabbed garbage cans, emptied the garbage bags and pointed the pipe into the can so all the water was contained. Two soaking wet volunteers and four garbage cans of water later and the pipe was repaired! Just another day in the 4-H diner! Happiness: There are so many things we strive to accomplish in 4-H, but a very important one is keeping the pro-grams fun so everyone involved has a happy experience. Honor: It has been an honor to work with the 4-H program in Carlton County – thank you!

Youth Development

A note from the new Minnesota 4-H State Director: Jennifer Skuza, PhD It is my honor to accept the role of Minnesota 4-H State Director, which I have been filling on an interim capacity since August. It has been since 1993 that I have served young people through Extension and seen just how impactful 4-H can be in the growth of our youth. The 4-H youth development program is a wonderful place for youth to pursue a life of thriving. What does it mean to thrive? Thriving is characterized as the ability to pursue happiness and success, while feeling connected to others and our surrounding world. It is what we all want for our children,

their friends and in fact every youth in our community. But many young people are not on a pathway toward thriving. Research shows that by the beginning of high school, only about a quarter of young people in the US are on that critical path to happiness, success and connection. So many youth are being left behind. What can be done? I believe 4-H is part of the solution. When 4-H is at its best, we empower youth with the skills necessary to thrive. We come along side our young peo-ple and offer positive youth development experiences that gradually help them learn and lead –building their ca-pacity to thrive. That learning process can begin anywhere, at 4-H summer camp, a club meeting, animal science project day or community service gathering. As we get to know each young person’s unique gifts, interests and hopes for their future, we can craft learning and leadership experiences that build on their potential. Step by step, they become globally-minded and engaged citi-zens who are ready and empowered to live happy, successful and connected lives. In what ways are you helping youth thrive? Each of us has a role to play in this critical youth development work. When you listen to the ideas of youth, when you empower them to take on leadership roles, when you support them through disappointment and failure, in-troduce them to new places and people, and celebrate their steady growth, you are making a difference. You are helping our youth thrive. I am thrilled to continue my work in positive youth development with you in Minnesota 4-H. Together, we can ensure Minnesota youth thrive.
