November 2015

The SDEA Christmas Lunch has become a

favourite among members as an informal get

together in the lead up to the Christmas

festivities.

This year the Association is embracing the

Christmas spirit within the very fabric of

The Cellarium (the Latin word for cellar), a new

magnificent vaulted space within the 14th

century buildings once used by Benedictine

monks to store their food and drink.

Join us at this amazing venue for a traditional

Christmas Lunch on Wednesday 9th

December. It’s the ideal place for members

and their guests to mix and build relationships.

The three course lunch is just £36.50 + VAT

(excludes drinks).

Preparations are already in full

swing for the next EuroShop to be

held in Düsseldorf from 5 to 9

March 2017.

For many years EuroShop has

been very successful with its

subdivision into the four areas

EuroConcept, EuroSales,

EuroExpo and EuroCIS. However,

developments in retail are seeing

EuroShop break new ground with

forward looking, consistent

changes. In concrete terms this

means 2017 will see the four

segment structure of the past

being replaced with a new system

for the future. The new

segmentation features seven

Experience Dimensions: POP

Marketing (Halls 1 + 3), Expo &

Event Marketing (Halls 4 + 5),

Retail Technology (Halls 6 + 7a),

Lighting (Halls 9 + 10), Visual

Merchandising (Hall 11), Shop

Fitting & Store Design (Halls 12-

14) and Food Tech & Energy

Management (Halls 15-17).

The last EuroShop, in 2014, was

a success across the board with

109,496 visitors from some 100

countries travelling to the Rhine

to gather information on all

facets, innovations and trends in

the global retail world from the

2,229 exhibitors attending the

event from 56 nations.

Retail Design Expo is doubling in size

and will provide participants with

over 250 exhibitors, new products,

ideas and solutions, 75+ free

conference sessions, including two

new theatres, a dedicated Shopper

Marketing Conference and a VM

Workshop.

Supported by SDEA, the event will

bring together over 16,000 visitors

including top retailers, marketers,

visual merchandisers, designers,

shopfitters and products and service

providers, all under one roof for two

days of inspiration, networking,

learning, deal-making and exploring

new business opportunities.

Co-located with its sister show RBTE,

Retail Design Expo will also sit

alongside Retail Digital Signage

Expo, an-exciting new show

embracing the booming retail digital

signage market.

Presentation briefings

The conference promises exciting

dialogues and ideas exchanges,

thanks to thought- provoking panels

and sessions by star-studded

speakers on the industry’s hottest

issues.

A highlight for the 2016 conference

will be the presentation by Andy

Dowling, Operations Manager at F&F

Clothing, Tesco. Andy will be talking

about the “Challenges of Managing

the Delivery of PoS to Multiple Shops

in Multiple Countries and

Languages. “

On the VM front, Paul Wilkins, Head

of Visual & Store Design, will share

his expertise in making the Space

N.K. stores so engaging. Bringing

theatre to the beauty business, Paul

discusses how store layout and

product promotion opportunities in

these beautifully laid-out stores help

sell merchandise and aid the

specialist sales. Paul explains how

the stores facilitate the opportunity

to bring the drama and seasonal

change to the customer. Also

responsible for marketing images,

Paul will talk about store size,

optimizing the beauty calendar, and

events held at the flagship

Knightsbridge store of this unique

British brand.

Another first for the 2016

conference will be “Selfridges Oxford

Street Windows: Making by Magic”

session, presented by Hannah

Emslie. As Senior Creative Manager,

Hannah and her team work on the

themes that fascinate and delight

London customers. Hannah will

discuss some of the projects that

she and her team have installed

including: Bright Old Things, which

recognized the contribution to

fashion made by a number of

fashion doyens; Work It, the

humorous look at today's world of

work; Strength, which showcases the

avant-garde fashion offer of the

store; and Christmas 2015 windows.

Student Awards

The Retail Design Student Awards

will be making a return to Retail

Design Expo 2016. The scheme is

designed to celebrate, encourage

and promote the future stars of retail

design. Students will work to live

briefs from Topshop and Speedo.

A new initiative for this year is the

launch of the VM Student Awards,

created to encourage and support

new talent and to recognize

students’ achievements in the field

of visual merchandising. Briefs have

been provided by Liberty, Oasis and

Browns.

First to reveal their Christmas

windows as Shoptalk closed for

press was Selfridges whose

‘Journey to the Stars’ windows are

based on the 12 signs of the

zodiac.

Featuring dramatic and eye

catching displays which glisten

and sparkle in time for the festive

season, and completed with

contemporary display mannequins

adding the final dramatic focal

points to the window scheme.

A bespoke finish was specially

created - the result of an intensive

development process by the team

at Global Display’s London studio -

and like every good Christmas

story requiring a secret ingredient

to provide a truly unique finish.

Talking to the Daily Mail, Selfridges’

Hannah Emslie, the store’s senior

creative manager, revealed that the

project took over a year of

meticulous planning and 32,000

hours to complete!

'It's certainly a modern Christmas',

continues Hannah. 'Customers do

have a certain expectation when it

comes to our windows but at the

same time we want to make them

unexpected and exciting.'

When the Movetech UK (Part of the

British Turntable Group) rental team

was commissioned by Mansfield

Design to help with the launch of the

highly anticipated Ford Focus RS, it

wasn't just about supplying the

movement. The project included the

installation of a 6m diameter

revolving stage turntable on location

in Cologne, Germany, as well as

supporting with set build and the

utilisation of special effects

throughout the event, all whilst

cohering to stringent targets and

deadlines.

The highly anticipated World reveal

of the Ford Focus RS had a brief for

'something out of the ordinary' and

'to put on a show' making it

completely unique when comparing

it to your typical corporate reveal.

The event was to take place in the

engine plant warehouse, located at

the company’s Cologne factory. The

reason behind this was because

both Ford and Mansfields wanted to

produce one of the most spectacular

drive-in moments in the history of

car reveals, and to show people, not

just tell them, that the all-new Focus

RS will be a serious machine that is

a breed apart from the competition.

With the launch being such a high

profile event, there was only going to

be one company Mansfields would

turn to for support, and that was

Movetech UK. Over many years both

companies have come together and

formed a great partnership,

producing and supplying first-rate

ideas, designs and systems to make

countless events and exhibitions

very successful. On supplying the

6m diameter revolving stage

turntable it was evident the event

was going to be an unbelievable

spectacle, the revolving stage

turntable was installed flush into a

custom made stage surround

accompanied with an array of LED

lighting, special effects and media

screens, all simultaneously working

in unison.

Matt Forrest, Movetech UK’s rental

manager, explains: "Launches like

these don't come along every day,

and with international press flying in

to get a first look at the vehicles in

the action packed week long

programmes, it's great to know our

systems are at the main focal point

of the event. Even though we are

industry experts and we have been

doing this for decades, the sense of

pressure is always in the back of

your mind, but this is without doubt

always overturned by the

determination to get the job

completed thus making each event a

colossal success."

Golf legend Bernard Gallacher

opened Blackwell Grange Golf Club's

new pro shop in Darlington last

month following an ambitious fit out

by MicroSlat International.

Club professional Ralph Givens

explained: "We needed a new pro

shop to meet the increased demand.

The old one was too small and didn't

have enough space to display all our

stock."

The club gave MicroSlat’s Managing

Director Terry Dady a free hand in

designing the new layout and using

the company’s all-aluminium display

solutions.

Terry explained: “Because we

started with a blank canvas I had

unprecedented flexibility. For a fully

integrated look we left cables

hanging behind the display panels,

cut the slatwall and designed special

finishers for the electrical sockets.

So the slatwall ran flush from floor to

ceiling the skirting boards and

architraves were built out by an extra

50mm.

“I hope we created a shop with

fantastic ambience that offers the

club unprecedented flexibility for

many years to come.”

Three-time Ryder Cup captain Mr

Gallacher said he was delighted

to be asked to perform the

official opening ceremony.

"After looking round I was really

impressed,” he added. “The new

pro shop is fantastic and the

displays really allow it to show off

a huge range of equipment.

Blackwell Grange is a superb

course - now it has the facilities

to match."

Unibox Retail was contacted by

Multiyork Furniture to help them to

develop a merchandising display

system they could then use

throughout their store. The visual

merchandising team from Multiyork

had been searching for the right

system for their needs and had

found what they believed to be

perfect on the Unibox Retail website.

They were interested in SOL, a

alongside Multiyork’s VM team the

final solution was to black powder

coat the framework, combined with

Reducing labour costs and

increasing sales has just

become easier for

retailers, with the launch

of the innovative new

Multivo™ shelf

management system from

HL Display.

Multivo makes the daily

work of restocking, front

facing and planogram

changes easier and faster. The

solution also allows automatic

fronting of more packaging types

than ever before. Fronting can be

either automatic, utilising integrated

pushers, or manual simply by using

a pull strip to bring product to the

shelf edge, providing a high level of

flexibility and ensuring optimum

product visibility at all times.

In addition, planogram changes can

be made without even removing

products from the shelf, saving time

and making the process of updating

displays in line with new product

launches and promotions far more

efficient.

In addition, Multivo has an optional

built-in low stock indicator (LSI),

which is triggered when stock is low

giving the retailer an early warning

of stock-outs and potential loss of

sales.

Autoglym, a British manufacturer of

Halfords stores across the country.

As well as installing the Autoglym

merchandised each of the new units

to a specific planogram provided by

Purplebone is one of the newest

chic beauty parlours for dogs to hit

the high streets of London. Based in

Notting Hill, Westfield and Chelsea,

the shops provide dog owners a

unique opportunity to buy quirky and

practical gifts and gadgets to help

pamper and look after their pet.

W&Co was contacted by Purplebone

as they were looking for new signage

to update and enhance their brand

image of their prestigious 155,

King’s Road, Chelsea store. The

client’s brief was to have two

illuminated signs that utilised their

brand colours and was impactful on

the high street.

W&Co proposed a halo illuminated

internal sign that was built up and

mounted to the back wall of the

shop. The fascia sign of the shop is

in a prominent position and needed

to be bold, and bright whilst in

keeping with the other shop fronts in

a very affluent area of London. The

fascia signage was face illuminated

with built up ‘rim and return’ letters

spelling ‘Purplebone’.

The bold purple colour was carefully

matched to their existing corporate

branding colours from sample store

fixtures supplied by the customer.

All of the signage was fitted with

high bright and eco-friendly LEDs for

a crisp and even illumination that

will last for years.

The signage was very well received

by the client who commented “The

signage is perfect! We couldn’t be

happier!! It looks great at night!”

2015 is Amari Plastics’ 40th

Anniversary and as part of the

company’s year-long celebrations, it

hosted a gala party event for its key

suppliers at the beautiful and

historic Oakley Court riverside hotel

at Windsor on the 25th and 26th of

June 2015.

Jamie Manifold, Amari Plastics’

Supplier Relations Manager, said:

“Our relationships with suppliers are

a cornerstone of our success. In

fact, without them, there would be

no Amari Plastics! So it’s always

been our priority to engender trust

and friendship and build really

strong and durable, long-term

supplier relationships. This party

was a way of saying thank you to

them for their continued support.

Many of our guests represent

companies with whom we have been

in partnership for decades. As an

example, Amari Plastics has been a

distributor of Bayer products since

the formation of the company in

1975.”

Amari Plastics celebrates in style

with supplier partners

Ultima Displays have launched a

brand new brochure for their Retail

sector. “We are extremely excited to

be able to provide portable display

products for the retail market,” said

Andrew Burdett Managing Director

for Ultima Displays Ltd. “We have a

great range of products including

wall frames with textile fabric

graphics, Light boxes, LED displays

and much more. We will be sourcing,

designing, developing and

manufacturing a fantastic new range

of products specifically for the retail

industry and believe having the right

marketing tool is key to the success

of any product”

To that end Ultima Displays has

designed their inspirational and

visual Retail Collection Brochure,

created to show case their portable

display products

in a range of

insitu shots to

help customers

envisage how and

where display

products can be

used in a retail

environment.

“We were able to

promote this

brochure hot off the press at the

brand new Print Show at the NEC

earlier this year, feedback was

great, finally a brochure from a

display company that actually shows

where products can be used, all of

our trade customers who have

viewed this brochure said they

would be ordering a supply to show

to their end users as they believed it

would help with visualisation and

close the deal easier”.
