The critics are circling – and so are the Sharks.

While the hand of many Penrith fans may be hovering over the panic button right now, things certainly need to be put into perspective.

Take the first-choice five-eighth and halfback out of any team in the NRL, and see how they go.

Imagine the Roosters without James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce. Imagine the Dragons at the moment without Gareth Widdop and Benji Marshall.

The unfortunate timing of Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace’s injuries has left Penrith without any real direction in attack, and the side is suffering significantly from it.

As I wrote last week, until one or both return, it’ll be pretty rough sailing.

The upside is it’s an incredible learning experience for everyone involved, includ-

ing a young backline that has been thrown into the deep end a lot quicker than coach Ivan Cleary would have liked.

Penrith will come through this, and I do believe they’ll string the required wins together to be playing finals football come September.

But the immediate mission is to navigate their way to victory over Cronulla on Sunday afternoon at Pepper Stadium.

There is a more comforting feeling about being at home, though the Sharks are in rare good form and coming off three straight victories.

Penrith will welcome back Dean Whare from injury this weekend, but the injury curse has continued with both Josh Mansour and Brent Kite ruled out for extended periods.

On Tuesday, coach Ivan Cleary named a team that is unlikely to resemble the one that runs on to Pepper Park on Sunday.

He named a seven man bench that includes players like Tupou Sopoaga and Will Smith, neither of whom have played first grade this year. He didn’t name Elijah Taylor but he’s likely to be fit.

Despite playing two seasons for Cronulla, this will be the first time that Luke Lewis returns to Penrith Stadium – it’ll be an interesting homecoming for the local junior and local fans are likely to give him their unique style of welcome.

Despite their mixed form this season, the Sharks are a dangerous team and in fact beat Penrith twice last season.

The man to watch against Penrith’s inexperienced halves pairing and back-line will be young five-eighth Jack Bird,

who continues to impress since debuting earlier this year. Partnered with the predictable but safe Jeff Robson, Cronulla are developing some stability in the halves which is helping lay the platform for good results on the field.

The Sharks would have gained enormous confidence from their hard fought victory in horrible conditions against South Sydney on Monday night.

What I like about Cronulla is the mix of youth and experience. It hasn’t always been a formula for success for the club because for some reason, they can’t make it all click, but if it all comes together at the right time of the year, I have no doubt the Sharks can be somewhat of a finals threat.

You have the enthusiasm and excite-ment of players like Bird and Valentine Holmes, then the experience of players like Robson, Michael Ennis, Paul Gallen, Wade Graham and Michael Gordon.

This match is no walk in the park for Penrith, but I do think being back at home is a particularly big advantage.

It might be stating the obvious but no position in Ivan Cleary’s 17-man line-up is safe, according to Panthers backrower Tyrone Peachey.

The 23-year-old rising star revealed to Extra Time that his heart skipped a beat when he heard the news fellow young gun and backrower Bryce Cartwright had been dropped to reserve grade recently follow-ing several disappointing performances.

“If you’re not performing Ivan’s not going to play you, so there’s a lot of pressure with some of the young blokes coming up through the ranks,” he said.

“Seeing Brycey not playing first grade puts pressure on yourself. If you don’t play good, you’re going to get dropped. It can happen to anyone.

“I’m not sure why Ivan [dropped Bryce], probably because we lost three games in a row and something had to change.”

It’s been an interesting start to the season for the one time Shark, who will be up against his former club Cronulla this Sunday afternoon at Pepper Stadium.

During his first real season in the top grade last year, Peachey set the competi-

tion alight and was a real game-changer in Penrith’s offence when he came off the bench.

Despite Peachey suffering a season-ending pectoral injury midway through last year, he made a successful comeback during the pre-season and even earned himself an Indigenous All Stars jumper along the way.

However, the first seven games of the season have been admittedly a struggle for Peachey as he continues to regain his strength and confidence.

“I’ve been too inconsistent lately and I just want to play with a bit of consistency and hopefully just keep performing so I can keep my spot in the top 17,” Peachey said.

“I suppose my confidence is getting better the more games that I play and the more work I’m getting on my pec.

“It’s getting better and better (pec) and I feel more confident out there.”

Peachey added that he didn’t mind coming off the bench, to add spark to Penrith’s attack.

In March, before Penrith’s season opener against the Bulldogs, Peachey signed a new two-year deal with the Panthers that will see him remain at the club until the end of 2017.

» Penrith’s almost unbelievable injury toll got worse this week with news that Brent Kite and Josh Mansour will be on the sidelines for between six and eight weeks each after picking up injuries against the Titans last weekend. It’s a particularly tough blow for Mansour who was in line for international duties, with Australia playing New Zealand next weekend.

» Penrith is one club making a play for Gold Coast Titans forward Nate Myles. The Panthers are well aware that their forward pack could be an issue next year with Nigel Plum and Brent Kite retiring and Adam Docker likely to leave the club. Myles will be 30 next year but that suits the Panthers, who will rely on their own junior system for young stars and fill any gaps with experienced players like Myles and Trent Merrin, who is joining Penrith from St George-Illawarra next season.

» I’m told the Panthers are hoping that Jamie Soward will return to the field against the Brisbane Broncos in a fort-night.

» Meanwhile, despite not being named to play, Elijah Taylor will make his come-back from a knee injury against Cronulla and will captain the side. Taylor was close to coming back against the Titans last weekend but Ivan Cleary didn’t want to risk him.

» Don’t be surprised if Penrith coach Ivan Cleary signs another contract extension before the end of the season. Cleary is signed until the end of 2016 but there’s some concern at the club that rival clubs, including Manly, will be circling – particu-larly if Cleary does guide the Panthers to the finals despite an horrific injury toll for a second consecutive year. The club is also aware that it needs stability in the management structure, particularly given rugby league boss Phil Gould will most likely move on at some point in the next two years. At the moment Cleary is the safest coach in the NRL – he has the legitimate full support of the Board and management team.

» Former Penrith Panthers Member-ship and Merchandise Manager, Shaun Mielekamp, has been announced as the new CEO of A-League club Central Coast Mariners. In recent years Mielekamp has been working with the Western Sydney

Wanderers and has been part of their suc-cessful rise.

» Only the A-League thinks it is at war with rugby league. Other codes see the strength in partnerships, as proven by the recent announcement that the Panthers and AFL club Port Adelaide will work together. The clubs have formed an infor-mal alliance that will see them sharing in-formation, skills and knowledge that will benefit both teams on and off the field.

» A group of Indigenous students from Kingswood High School visited Pepper Stadium with their parents last week, to chat about the importance of education and how vital it is to attend school every day. Panthers Indigenous Welfare Officer Glen Liddiard sat down with the group to discuss the current culture of letting kids have the day off whenever they wanted, because mums and dads may not see value in the regular school system. Dur-ing their visit, they went on a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium and its

facilities, and after spending a couple of hours with the Panthers, both parents and students were more determined to get their attendance levels up and place more value on getting a good education.

» Injured Panthers five-eighth Jamie So-ward is as competitive as ever even away from the football field. Last week he took on fellow Panthers star Tyrone Peachey in a FIFA 15 tournament on PlayStation and came out on top, beating Peachey three games to nil. Soward posted the results on his Instagram account, which attract-ed this bizarre comment from one of his followers: “Mate, I bet your [sic] hopeless. If you got a PS4 add me tom_vb47. I won’t go telling people your name and stuff so you’ll get a million requests, I just wanna [sic] vs ya [sic] cus [sic] I know I’ll smash ya [sic]. If your [sic] a man add me on ps4 if that’s what u [sic] use.”

» Don’t forget the Panthers will be wear-ing their ANZAC jersey against the Sharks on Sunday.

Panthers winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak admits he’s suffering from a small case of ‘second-year syndrome’ as he continues to find his feet in the NRL.

After seven matches, the Panthers 2014 Rookie of the Year has only crossed the line twice (both in Round 1 v Canterbury) and made 12 uncharacteristic errors – the second most by any player this year (Manu Vatuvei is ahead of him).

“It’s getting a lot tougher. People are coming onto me a lot better and know the things that I do, so I’ve got to mix things up,” Watene-Zelezniak told Extra Time.

“This year a lot of people have worked out my game, like my scoots and what I do there. The second year they say is the toughest but I’ve got to try and do my best and get better each week.”

Of course when both Watene-Zelezniak and the Panthers have been firing in the past, it’s when their halves combination have been in order.

Watene-Zelezniak admits it has been a challenge to his game working with a makeshift halves pairing.

“I played with Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace last year and a few games this year and I know a few things they do. When the halves change you’ve got to change to what they do,” he said.

Meanwhile, Watene-Zelezniak has encouraged all fans to come out to Sunday’s game against the Sharks on what will be a special ANZAC-themed match.

“It’s a good time to remember everyone that’s served in the war and died for us, not

only in our country but in other countries too,” he said.

Watene-Zelezniak also urged fans to stick by the team despite recent results.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries and we haven’t been able to get a solid combina-tion going,” he said.

“We need as much support as possible on Sunday. When the crowd and supporters get behind us and believe in us, it really helps us out a lot.”

INSIDE STORY WITH JUSTIN PASCOECEO, PENRITH DISTRICT RUGBY LEAGUE

WHY LEADERSHIP IS SO CRUCIAL

Few things are more important to human activity than leadership. Effective leadership helps our nation

through times of peril. It makes a busi-ness organisation successful. It enables a not-for-profit organisation to fulfil its mission. The effective leadership of parents enables children to grow strong and healthy and become productive adults.

The absence of leadership is equally dramatic in its effects. Without leader-ship, organisations move too slowly, stagnate and lose their way. Much of the literature about organisations stresses decision-making and implies that if decision-making is timely, complete, and correct, then things will go well. Yet a decision by itself changes nothing. After a decision is made, an organisation faces the problem of implementation – how to get things done in a timely and effective way. Problems of imple-mentation are really issues about how leaders influence behaviour, change the course of events, and overcome resistance. Leadership is crucial in implementing decisions successfully. Leadership is never easy. No matter how effortlessly some leaders appear

to manage, the path of a leader is one fraught with constant challenge and surprise. However, the leader does not face the challenge alone. By definition, a leader has a group or organisation work-ing to meet each challenge and achieve each goal. The leader’s job is not to solve every problem alone, but to inspire those he or she leads to solve the problems. Good leaders recognise that they do not have all the answers and are constantly re-educating themselves on their busi-nesses and sharpening their leadership skills. Beyond personal qualities such as vision and positive thought, a leader must also take careful steps to commu-nicate with staff in the best way possible.

A rudderless ship is a ship that simply floats without intent, direction or purpose and here at Panthers we exist in such a competitive market that we cannot afford to operate rudderless. On and off the field we are constantly look-ing to empower our employees/players to become great leaders. It is never more important than right now as on the field we battle through a lot of injuries to our senior players, we cannot afford to take the field without our young players step-ping up and taking on leadership roles.

Penrith have set up a mouth-watering clash with unbeaten Mounties after moving into second position after yet another come from behind win at home, this time at the expense of the New Zealand Warriors 34-20.

The win was even more impressive given the late changes forced upon Penrith particularly that of Adam Docker, whose wretched run of outs so far in 2015 continue after having to pull out with illness during the warm-up. Docker joined other late withdrawals, Adrian Davis and Tupou Sopoaga, who were replaced by Matt Eisenhuth, Tom Eisenhuth and Ben Murdoch-Masila respectively.

After an early try to fullback David Simmons, the Warriors dominated the rest of the first half to lead 16-6 through some well-crafted tries to David Fusitu’a (2) and Glen Fisiiahi. A Will Smith charge-down and try on the stroke of half-time proved pivotal as the Panthers only trailed by four at the main break.

As they did against Manly the previ-ous week, the Panthers dominated the second half out-scoring the Warriors 22-4 to record their third win in as many matches with Eddie Aiono, Nu’u Akerpia, Brendan Attwood and Sam

Scarlett the try-scorers, while Will Smith completed a man-of-the-match perfor-mance scoring a try and five goals from six attempts – many of those kicked from the sideline.

The Panthers now turn their attention to this Saturday’s clash with the table-topping Mounties at the picturesque Aubrey Keech Reserve. Having defeated the in-form Jets 24-8 at Henson Park, Mounties will be looking for their eighth consecutive win of the season to push their competition lead out to six points.

It’s no surprise to see Mounties domi-nate the early rounds of the competition given the experience and guile of Josh McCrone, Mitch Cornish and Glen But-triss mixed with up and comers in Luke Page, Jack Ahearn and Patrick Mago at their disposal.

In team news, Penrith have swapped centres with Robert Jennings replac-ing brother George (NRL) while Ben Murdoch-Masila starts in the back-row in a reshuffled pack which sees Brendan Attwood revert to lock and Andy Saunders move into the front row for Sam Anderson (NRL). Pat Hollis and Reece Goldsmith have been added to an extended bench, while Adam Docker has not been named to play.

HOLDEN CUP NSW CUP

TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH LOOMS BETWEEN PANTHERS AND HIGH FLYING MOUNTIES

The Penrith Panthers have moved into third place on the Holden Cup ladder following another impressive display against the Gold Coast Titans last week.

The Panthers extended their winning streak to three in a row after a thrilling 36-24 victory at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The Titans took a 4-0 lead early before the Panthers hit back shortly after with young PNG sensation Stanton Albert scor-ing his first ever Holden Cup try.

The Titans were in again not long after to regain the lead 10-6 but Penrith hooker Tyrone May single-handedly got his side back into the game thanks to some nifty work out of dummy half.

Later in the half, the Panthers bucked the trend of the game to score again through Corey Harawira-Naera. With his own conversion the Panthers led 18-10.

However, in the dying seconds of the first half, the Titans managed to edge the scores closer with a try to Jed Cartwright. At half-time Penrith led 18-14.

Despite the ugly end to the first half, the Panthers opened the scoring in the second with two tries to winger Fuimanu Enise, just three minutes in.

The Panthers blew out the score to 26-14 before the Titans hit back in the 55th min-

ute through Cartwright once again, who earned his second of the day.

Down 26-20, the Titans made the final quarter of the match very interesting after they scored a great try to be down by just two.

However, that’s where the scoring ended for the home side who watched Penrith race in two more tries through Maliko Filino and Moses Leota to put the victory on ice.

Heading into the match the Panthers were dealt a devastating blow with the news form winger Joshua Jay had been ruled out for the season with an ACL injury.

This Sunday morning the third-placed Panthers will return to Pepper Stadium to take on the lowly Cronulla Sharks in Round 8 of the Holden Cup.

SHEENS IS FACING AN OLD PROBLEM

Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens is facing a huge dilemma over the next 12 months that could force him to give

the dreaded “tap on the shoulder” to one or more of his ageing stars.

Sheens is concerned for the future with so many current Kangaroos on the wrong side of 30.

On Sunday when the Australian team is read out for the ANZAC Test on Friday, May 1 in Brisbane, at least 10 players named will be aged 30 or over.

That’s a big concern with Friday’s match the only Test this year, then there’s a Four Nations tournament next year and a World Cup the year after.

A succession plan must be implemented sooner rather than later or as Sheens says “we’ll be like the Australian cricket team and the slump they had when all the old champions retired together like Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist, Langer and Hayden”.

Our strength for many years may become our weakness, the all important “spine” of the team of Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith, Jonathan Thurston and

Billy Slater will all turn 32 this year. Sheens is not panicking just yet and says

they are “once in a generation” players who can all play on longer than most.

But the Australian coach knows their time is coming to an end but can’t quite predict when or how that end will come.

The added dilemma for Sheens is the Kiwis, who twice beat Australia last year, are a young team on the rise.

The likely Kiwi spine going forward of Roger Tuivasa-Scheck (21), Shaun Johnson (24), Kieran Foran (24) and Issac Luke (27) are all in their prime and will potentially be around for the next two World Cups, at least.

So the planning ahead starts now. However the job at hand is the ANZAC

Test in the 100th year of the ANZACs – an important occasion – and for a coach who is on a year to year contract a game he must win to ensure he keeps his job.

So on Sunday we can expect at least one “selection shock”. That may mean someone will get the honour of becoming the 800th debutant.

WITH STEVE HART KEV’S KORNER

HEADACHE FOR COACH CLEARY

It’s been a bit of a rocky start to our season so far with a long list of injuries to some of our key players. But we’re

about to face an even bigger hurdle – and it’s something we haven’t had to deal with for a while.

We’re about to hit rep season. If you look at our current playing roster,

there are at least six players in line to be called up for duty – and that doesn’t include the boys in our casualty ward.

Matt Moylan’s name is being tossed around for inclusion in the Australian side for the ANZAC Test. Josh Mansour would have been another strong contender had he not injured his knee in our loss to the Titans.

Then there’s Elijah Taylor, Dean Whare, Lewis Brown and Sam McKendry who will all be vying for spots in the Kiwi team. Young Dallin Watene-Zelezniak could also be a late bolter on the back of some impressive form so far this year.

For the City v Country game, Tyrone Peachey and Moylan will press for a spot, with the likes of Jeremy Latimore, Bryce Cartwright, Isaah Yeo and George Jennings all nipping at their heels. I really believe any of those guys would do a great

job if they were to get a call up. We also have Sika Manu and Daniel Foster eligible to play for Tonga in the Pacific Test.

And last but not least – Origin. It’s every New South Welshman and Queens-lander’s dream to represent their state in this blockbuster series.

Coach Ivan Cleary is no stranger to juggling teams around, but this year could be especially challenging – especially if one or more of our boys are chosen in a rep side.

But it’s a great indication of how well the Panthers team, club and culture are going.

Years supporting the Panthers: 23 yearsFavourite current Panther and ex-Panther? Matt Moylan and Mark GeyerWhy do you support the Panthers? I grew up in Penrith and am a league tragic. I haven’t missed a game in the last 10 years. I love their culture, commitment to the juniors and their efforts with the community. What’s your best Panthers memo-ry? Scott Sattler’s tackle in the 2003 Grand FinalWhat’s your prized piece of Pan-thers memorabilia that you’d never sell? All of my signed jerseys If the Panthers won the 2015 Grand Final, how would you react? Tears, lots of happy tears and a permanent smile on my face and probably some serious happy dancing!
