ON TRIPLE M’S RUGBY league coverage last Sunday, Matthew Johns spoke of how diffi cult it was

to make an away trip in the fi nal round of the competition when you’re out of fi nals contention.

This is the big fear I have for the Panthers leading into Sunday’s round 26 clash with Manly at Brookvale Oval.

After an emotional year in which the side has gone from world beaters to cellar dwellers and back again, the reality is that

round 26 means very little for Penrith – the fi rst time all season that they are out of the race for the top eight.

2013 has been a year of over-achievement and a year in which Penrith broke new ground, and showed that 2014 will be much bigger and brighter and certainly more successful than the one almost over.

I’ve said during the week that 2013 – for all of its ups and downs – was the season Penrith had to have. It has been a circuit

breaker year and I believe we’ll look back on it as such, hopefully with our hands on a premiership trophy in either 2014 or 2015.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, there’s still one game to go, and it’d be a real shame for the Panthers to bow out of 2013 with a thumping at the hands of the high fl ying Sea Eagles, who toppled Melbourne last weekend at this same venue.

Sunday marks the fi nal game in Penrith colours for a number of the side’s stars, namely Lachlan Coote, Luke Walsh, Clint

Newton and Mose Masoe. All four will want their fi nal memory in a Penrith jersey to be a good one, but the reality is that while the heart might be in it, the body and the head knows that there’s nothing to play for other than pride.

Manly, on the other hand, have the fi nals ahead of them and even with injuries disrupting their preparation, they’ll want to get past Penrith easily to ensure their confi dence is high.

So, how can Penrith beat Manly and what motivation can they use to do it?

For the players who are leaving, it is about playing for pride in the jumper that gave them opportunity. Whether it be Lachlan Coote whose fi rst grade debut was in a Penrith jumper, or Luke Walsh whose fi rst grade career was saved when the Panthers rescued him from the scrapheap at Newcastle. Clint Newton was brought here to do a job, and he should have pride knowing that he did that job.

For Mose Masoe, this one season at Penrith has been his best in football and the opportunities now available to him overseas have come because of the chance he was given by Panthers offi cials.

The future at Penrith is all about ensuring that the jersey means something, and for these departing players, it truly has meant something and it’s time for them to step up and say thank you for that opportunity.

For the players sticking around, it’s all

about kicking off preparations for 2014 with a bang.

Players like James Segeyaro, Josh Mansour, Lewis Brown, Nigel Plum and Sam McKendry will all play a big role with the side next year and their preparation for this game should partly be aimed at giving us a glimpse of what 2014 will be like.

Against Canterbury last weekend, Penrith had a solid fi rst half but failed to capitalise on their opportunities, and didn’t build any real pressure on the Bulldogs thanks to kicks

early in the tackle count and a failure to earn repeat sets.

If the Sea Eagles are to go down at fortress Brookvale on Sunday, it will be because Penrith is not only playing with heart, but with their head as well.

The only way to send Manly into the fi nals with a loss is to force repeat sets, slow the game and ensure the majority of the match is played in their half of the fi eld. Give Manly an inch, and they’ll take a mile.

OUTGOING PANTHERS STAR LACHLAN Coote knew the writing was on the wall when he got injured

earlier this season and the club started signing new halves.

The 23-year-old fullback turned fi ve-eighth was this week released by the Panthers club from the fi nal year of his contract to join the North Queensland Cowboys on a three-year deal.

Speaking with Extra Time the morning after being released, Coote said it was sad to be a leaving the club he made his debut at as a skinny fresh-faced 18-year-old in 2008.

“I am a little disappointed but that’s footy these days, everyone moves on every now and then,” he said.

“I’m happy what I’ve done here. It’s been a great club for me and I love the fans, I have a lot of respect for them.”

Coote’s career at the Panthers has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least.

Riddled with injury over the past six years, Coote will have only played 83 games in Panthers colours after his fi nal appearance against Manly on Sunday.

Towards the back end of the 2012 season, Coote made the switch from his comfortable position of fullback to the important role of fi ve-eighth to show off his long kicking game and ball playing ability.

He was seen as Penrith’s saviour in the halves until Round two this year when he went down with a near season-ending pectoral injury.

Coote, however, made a remarkable recovery and returned a month ago during Penrith’s big loss to the Cowboys. However, Coote’s time on the sidelines saw the rise of

another local junior at fullback, Matt Moylan, plus the emergence of Isaac John at fi ve-eighth and with the 2014 signings of Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace, it seemed Coote’s days at Penrith were numbered.

“It was disappointing to get injured at the start of the year… I had two years left on my contract at the start of the year and I was keen to play fi ve-eighth, a new position and a new experience,” he said.

“I spoke to Ivan during the year and things happen, clubs sign diff erent people.”

Coote regarded his debut in 2008 and the club’s outstanding season in 2010, where Coote made a name for himself, as the highlights of his young career but he’s certainly looking forward to the next chapter in his life playing alongside Johnathan Thurston at the Cowboys.

“That’s what I’m most excited about, the Cowboys have international players and it’s going to be a great experience playing with them,” Coote said.

“I chose the Cowboys because they had the most interest in me, if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be leaving but I’m glad they came through with a three-year deal. It’s great knowing I have a bit of safety there and I’m looking forward to the change in weather.”

After wishing for a long career at fi ve-eighth it’s presumed Coote will now go back to his more familiar role of fullback at the Cowboys, replacing retiring star Matt Bowen.

“Things change, obviously they’ve got their halves combination set up there and Matt Bowen is retiring… it doesn’t bother me as long as I’m playing fi rst grade,” he said.

Coote will start training with the Cowboys in November.

LAST WEEK I SAID that the top eight would only change if the Cowboys lost to Cronulla, which they didn’t. I cannot

see the Cowboys or the Knights at home letting their semi-fi nal position slip against teams they are expected to defeat. With that I think that all the sides are thankful that the Warriors will not be there as on their day they can give any of the top sides a real threat.

round and the fact the Dragons line-up for a possible seven straight loses, and with the Broncos recording their worst season in history, could a few more positions become vacant at season’s end?

There are a number of high profi le coaches looking for a job and with contracts seemingly not worth the paper they are written on, the coaching make-up of several sides come the start of the pre-season will certainly be of interest.

No such dramas for Ivan Cleary, extending his term at the Panthers for another few years. The Panthers have exceeded all expectations and I was one of those that didn’t believe they would still be in contention for the fi nals up until last week.

All top four sides have genuine claims but I am going to tip the Rabbits to claim both the minor premiership and premiership with GI receiving ‘Clive’ for 2013.

AND WE’RE DOWN TO one… self-confessed “tomboy” Rhiannan Jansen has taken out Extra Time’s

Penrith Panthers Cheerleader of the Year competition.

The 24-year-old long-time Panthers cheerleader beat out 26 other girls over the four month competition to be crowned the overall winner.

“I had no idea I would make it this far,” Rhiannan said on Tuesday when contacted about her win.

“I was surprised to just get through the heats. It’s all very exciting.”

In the fi nal round of the competition the three fi nalists had to record a short video of them showcasing their skills as a cheerleader by creating and performing their own cheer. The only rules were they had to mention the Western Weekender in their performance.

Rhiannan’s video was spectacular as she used her hip hop infl uences in both her cheer and routine.

“When I was coming up with ideas for the video I thought I’ve got to show me and what I am into, and that’s hip hop,” Rhiannan said.

“When I was younger I was into ballet but once I found hip hop that was it for me.

“That’s how I am. I dress in that sort of style and if I’m going to ‘dress to impress’, I’m going to bring my own style to the table.”

Rhiannan said she received bucket loads of support from her family, friends and fellow cheerleaders during the campaign.

“The girls are beautiful, a couple of them posted comments on Facebook saying congratulations, so everyone was very supportive,” she said.

Rhiannan’s passion for the Panthers runs deep. She is the longest serving member of the current squad at six years and has now become one of the leaders of the group.

“When I fi rst started I was really quiet and I didn’t really know anyone,” Rhiannan said.

“As time went on I got to know the girls, the manager and the choreographer and I really clicked with them.”

Rhiannan started dancing when she was fi ve and hopes her win will inspire the dance students she currently teaches at Elevate Dance Centre in Smithfi eld.

“A lot of my students were involved in the making of the cheer video and to see that I’ve come out with the win will be fun for them,” Rhiannan said.

“A lot of the other cheergirls are ‘girly’ and I do have a tomboy thing. It’s cool to be diff erent sometimes.”

The winner of the grand fi nal was decided entirely by public vote, with voting closing at midday on Tuesday.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PANTHERS COACH Ivan Cleary who has received a contract extension to remain at the

Panthers until the end of the 2016 season. The surprising announcement was made during the Panthers Members Forum last Wednesday. Panthers boss Phil Gould said Cleary has been an integral part of Penrith’s rebuilding process. “Ivan has done an outstanding job with our NRL team and with establishing a new level of professionalism in our club,” he said. “Ivan has also played a vital role in setting up our development programs all the way back to junior league football, which I know will produce a steady stream of NRL quality players for many years to come. Under Ivan’s guidance, we are on our way to making the Panthers a major player in the NRL competition”.

Congratulations are also in order to former Panther Michael Jennings’ younger brother, Robert Jennings, who has signed a new deal to remain at the club. Speculation was rife that the younger “Jenko” would perhaps join his older brother at the Sydney Roosters, however Robert saw the light and has opted to stay out west and play footy with many of his talented teammates who have also opted to stay with the club for the next few years. The talented centre could be in line for a Holden Cup spot next year with his other brother George moving up to the NSW Cup.

The Panthers club have confi rmed to us that the logo doing the rounds of social media, and published in the Sydney Morning Herald as well as the Penrith Press Facebook page, is not the club’s new logo for next season. The new logo will be released before the end of the year.

Penrith is taking legal action against The Daily Telegraph over a story that appeared last week in relation to Sandor Earl’s well-publicised drugs issue. “Panthers are taking legal action because of damage to their reputation and because of the misleading and untrue allegations,” the club said in a statement.

Young Panthers stars Ethan Cook and Adam Docker visited Wallacia Public School last week to help out with the Coles Backyard League Program, held by the NRL.

It’s understood the Panthers will request for the majority of their home games to be scheduled for Saturday nights next year, to cater better for families.

Well, that’s it for The Masked Panther in 2013. I’m hoping the team at Extra Time and the Weekender will have me back in 2014. For now, I’m off to hibernate for the off -season and work on a new mask for the new season! Thanks for reading.

LAST WEEKEND WE SAW some great footy in our Sunday grand fi nals. The 2013 A Grade Premiers are: 3rd Division Blacktown City, 2nd Division

Minchinbury and 1st Division St Marys.International grand fi nals this weekend will see

the Junior League season in Penrith come to an end for 2013 so this is an opportune time to congratulate all clubs, teams, offi cials, parents, volunteers and all involved in junior league for their dedication.

In saying this there is one more weekend of footy for our U7 to A Grade premiers who will take part in the Battle of the West Cup on the weekend of September 21 and 22.

The Battle of the West Cup will see the premiers of these competitions in a Penrith vs Parramatta Challenge with each team receiving two points for a win, one point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. These points will be tallied to see who takes out the Battle of the West Cup for 2013.

The games will be scheduled at St Marys Leagues Stadium on Saturday, September 21 for the U7s, U8s, U10s, U12s, U14s, U16s and U19s and at Cabramatta

Sports Ground on Sunday, September 22 for the U9s, U11s, U13s, U15s, U17s and A Grade. Entry is by gold coin donation. Everyone is welcome to come and watch some great footy.

On Sunday long-term board member, Tom Fink, retired from the Junior League board after 22 years of service and I would like to personally thank Tom for his commitment, dedication and friendship during this time.

Tom has over 30 years service with the junior league and you will still see him around as he continues to volunteer within the offi ce and at the grounds. Enjoy that extra time in retirement Tom, it’s well-deserved!

What do they say, there is no rest for the wicked! As this season comes to a close this weekend, on Saturday, September 28 the Junior League will be hosting a forum with our (and your) club representatives to look at the 2014 season. Any outcomes from these forums will be advised via social media and posted on our website.

The Penrith Panthers Holden Cup team are just one more win away from fi nishing the regular season in second spot before the National Youth Competition heads into fi nals mode next weekend.

Last Saturday afternoon the in-form Panthers blitzed their opposition 46-22, ending Canterbury’s 10-game winning streak in front of their home fans at ANZ Stadium.

Boosted with the late inclusion of NRL star James Roberts, the Panthers dominated for most of the match during the somewhat scrappy aff air.

At half time the Bulldogs and Panthers were all locked up at 16-all before Penrith hit their straps in the second half scoring six tries to one.

But the two standouts for the Panthers were speed machine Roberts and young gun Dallin Watene-Zelezniak who scored a whopping six tries between them during the 24-point win.

Roberts, in just his second game with the

Holden Cup side, scored four tries while at the same time showing off his eye-catching speed down the touchline.

This Sunday the Panthers will fi nish off their very successful regular season campaign with a trip to sunny Brookvale Oval to take on the last-placed Manly Sea Eagles.

The game could prove to be a dangerous one for the Panthers who will consider resting many of their stars ahead of the fi nals the following weekend.

Meanwhile, the Windsor Wolves are also hitting form at the right time of the year after notching up their third straight win in as many weeks.

Last Friday night Windsor showed the Bulldogs what they were made of, defeating the blue and whites 30-14.

Tonight the fi fth-placed Wolves will play their fi nal NSW Cup home game against the last-placed Wyong Roos. A win could see the Wolves fi nish the season in the top four.

THE SEASON IS ALL but gone for the 2013 Penrith Panthers. After a year of highs and lows, Gus

Gould’s (pictured) boys from the foot of the Mountains have come up just short of fi nals football. Round 26 does however hold particular importance to a number of players in the NRL. These are the men facing the dreaded ‘nudie run’ on Mad Monday.

A timeless tradition held by clubs across the code is striking fear into eight Penrith players as they run out for their fi nal chance of grabbing a four-pointer.

The tryless Panthers for 2013 so far are; Tim Grant, Jeremy Latimore, Sam Anderson, Blake Austin, Cameron Ciraldo, Geoff Daniela and Adam Docker.

Although some of these players have had limited game time in 2013, the unfortunate truth is that nobody is safe

from the dreaded dash in their birthday suit.

Some of those guys aren’t running out this weekend due to injury and hence, they can book their nudie run in right now.

Those who are taking the fi eld will be playing their hearts out when they make it onto Brookvale Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Whether you’re at the game or watching it on the box, spare a thought for these men as they make one last desperate attempt to keep their clothes on.
