Cxtract? from &ent Eolio of tfje ?>tt of grmag?), 1703. By Rev. Chancellor J. B. Leslie, D.Lit., M.R.I.A.

The following extracts relating to lands in Co. Louth that belonged to the

See of Armagh have been taken from "

A View or an Account taken by Thomas

Ashe in 1703." He was agent for Primate Narcissus Marsh, and he evidently visited

the lands and carefully noted their capabilities, as well as the uses to which they were put, gives the names of many tenants and adds topographical notes. The

MS. from which they are taken was until recently in the possession of a Mr. Main

waring Burton in England?who was probably a descendant of Thomas Ashe?and

was presented by him to the See of Armagh in January, 1939. A few pages of the

MS., relating to Drogheda, etc., are missing. The spelling of the MS. has been repro

duced.

is a small Park called the Church Park or Medow joyning to

the Churchyard which some say belongs to Lord Primat, others to Alderman Grayham. The latter challenges, as

629 acres which the Lesee and his under tenants with the

Freeholders Injoy to Grayse with sheep and black cattle.

Sir Thomas Fortescue the Lesee informes that there are near

200 acres of the above townland which belonge to severall

freeholders who are possest thereof and that they lye intermixt

with Lord Primat's land. In the town of Dromiskin are

about 80 houses and tenements or cabbins, and a Preety Church and a large Churchyard. The House the Minister

lives in is near to the Church a preety little Box of a House

with a garden, stable and other convenient outhouses belonging to it. The rest of the houses are but ordinary, except that

which is now an Inn or Ale House which joynes to the Common.

But Note that the Lesee has a very good Stone House with

Stables, Barnes and other very convenient out houses and

offices. There is at the entrance into the backyard belonging to this House a very high Stone Tower [The present Round

Tower] with stone stairs leading up to the top of it. The

Lesee and his ancestors have been long tenents to the See for

it and have made great Plantacons and improvements upon

it. There are two large orchards, a very hansome pleasure

garden and large kitchen gardens. In the loer orchard are

many draynes cutt to free it from the water which lyeing low overflowed the ground, and made it Bogg. There is a

grasswalk over 160 paces long and about 10 paces broad with

large well grown seckamore, ash & other trees, planted

regularly on each side the walk which make a very pleasant shade in somer. There is also a Court & a Walk at the

Entrance or way to the house sett with trees ut supra and all

about the house orchard and medows near it. The hedge rows (which are fine quicks) are such like trees &c. in great numbers so that the seat looks at a distance to be a grove or

wood & is very pleasant & English like. The land is all very

good, bears extraordinary corne of all sorts and there is a

great deal of good medows (inclos'd) belonging to it. To

each of the tenements in the town belongs a small park or

garden plott and on the Lurgan near the seaside is inclos'd a narrow strip of land whereon are about 14 small tenements

with garden plotts &c. The inclosiure is continued for almost a mile together. The whole concerne is bounded with the sea East, Garlands Town & Drumleck South, Newrath,

Whiterath & Milltown North & West?Note. There are

severall Chief Rents payable to Lord Primat from the free

holders before mentioned and those are granted with all other

Royalltyes as Cort Leet & Cort Barron Fines & Amercements

&c. (which are not usually granted and with Submission I

think not grantable but during the life of the Lessor) and the

Lessee now receives the said chief rents, makes & appoints his own Seneschall who keeps Corts and Amerces the tenants

without any Comission from the Primat or takeing notice of

the Seneschall appointed by His Grace's Gen all Comission I spoak of this to Sr. Thomas &c. Note. By the Seaside is a wier or ware where they take fish and a Mill.

Ruskagh.

There are 2 Denominations of land known by that name

This contains 216 acres 3 roods Ireish Plantacon Measure.

Sr. Henry Titchburn is tenant. This is part of Lord Primat 's

Demesnes and cannot be sett but from year to year or dureing

the incumbency of the Lord Primat for the time being. It

is naturally very good arrable & pasture land but it has been

much under tillage & part of it plowed out of heart. There is a great deal of it good meadow or might with a small charge or good husbandry be made such. It lyes about 2 miles from

Drogheda. A pleasant road by the stream side leads to it

and it is bounded with Betaghstown West, Newtown East, Sr. Henry Titchburn's own land South, and a small River

which runns by the Castle or House hereafter noted, North.

Note.?On this townland stands an Old Castle which is

3 story high. There have been 3 good roomes in it with large clousetts but the windows are small & the stone stayrs leading

up to the roomes are very narrow & dark. There are good

valts or sellors under it. The roomes are lofty and the maine

tymber of the floores have been very good, but for want of care part of it is decay'd, particularly the great beam which

goes cross the floore of the second story, which being rotten or decay'd at one end fell down and has much damaged the

floore below it. Some of the clousetts have neither floore nor

roof but the timber of the roof of the Castle seems to be preety good, though the covering wants repairs. There is to this Castle adjoyninge a Dwelling house which appears to have had some good roomes and good offices in it. But little remains of it that can be made use of. The floores are all broken (so are those in the Castle) and the few boards that remain are decayed & rotten, so that neither the Castle nor

the house are tenant able at this time. There have been, as

I am informed, belonging to this Castle very good stable &

other outhouses, but they are all destroy'd & nothing now

remains of them. There is a Pidgeon House which is large & has been well stockt but there are no pidgeons now in it & it wants repare. Some of the Primats before the warrs of 41 have lived in this Castle as I am informed.

The Duty Fish of Killclogher & Baltra & Terfeccan which the Lesse receives now holding the lands above. I have

enquired after it & cannot learn that it is of much value. Sr. Henry, I hear, sells it for 4 Pounds p. ann. and the Tythes of Betaghstown which he also has with the land of Terfeccan he setts for about 4 Pound p. ann. and it cannot be much

Note.?There was formerly one John Tool who held the above Denominacon. It was he, as I am informed, made all

the improvements that are now upon it, and he has been

latly turned out of possession thereof by the Lessee, therefore

complains and thinks himself hard used.
