This is a bi-weekly newsleer designed to create connecons across the Long-Term Care and Assisted Living sector at Vancouver Coastal Health. It is an opportunity to share best pracce and innovaons, celebrate successes and get to know what our colleagues are doing at VCH, and beyond, to create the best possible experience for residents, families and staff at our homes. We want to build our COMMUNITY, so please share this newsleer widely and send us your stories! The residents and staff of Cedarview Lodge were able to join together in a celebraon of Philippine Independence Day with a colourful display of folk dances, costumes and music. Josie (Care Aide) has been working at Cedarview Lodge for 28 years and took the lead to coordinate a special performance for the residents. In previous years, Josie has been able to bring children to Cedarview Lodge to perform Filipino cultural dances, but this year - due to the pandemic - she could not do this, and had to get creave! So instead, Josie harnessed the talent of Cedarview Lodge staff - nurses, care aides, housekeepers, food service, and recreaon staff from the Philippines and other naonalies and cultures all pracced the dances together and then gave a wonderful performance in front of the residents and other staff. There were different types of dances from different regions in the Philippines and it was a fun, joyful, colourful performance against a beauful bright backdrop. It was a great opportunity and an honour to share this annual celebraon with residents and those staff who make up such a large proporon of our care team. Many residents got up and danced with the staff and when the event was finished, one resident said “This is a great place to live”. ~ Cedarview Lodge Team

Extrarodinary Efforts in Extreme Heat. As if a pandemic wasn't enough todeal with, the extreme heat this past week added another layer of challengefor residents and staff in long-term care. Staff went to extraordinary lengths tohelp people stay cool - from rummaging through donaon closets to find pantsto turn into shorts, bringing in tank tops and other cooler clothing from homefor residents to wear, popsicle creaons, cooling zones and moving residents tocooler areas. These are just some of the stories that we heard about thatexemplify the true team efforts that were made to keep residents safe. Kudosand thank you to the dedicated (and creave) staff in long-term care who wentabove and beyond to manage the extreme heat crisis whilst in the middle of apandemic crisis.

Age is No Limit to Creavity. Residents and staff at Providence HealthCare's St. Vincent's Langara wrote a song to honour the organizaon's frontlinehealth workers. Led by their music therapists, they came up with the lyrics, setit to a melody, created artwork for it and recorded and edited the music! Theresult is this amazing music video, tled Don't Give up the Ship - a tlesuggested by resident Joyce Kruger. This video is just another reminder of thetalent and passion that exists within the homes.

Within the theme of "Caring for ourCommunity," the meeng consisted of a presentaon on understanding andaddressing health care provider stress related to supporng LTC residentsthroughout the dying process, followed by breakout discussions whereparcipants got to meet colleagues from other homes and discuss ways to takecare of ourselves. A big thank you to Kit Chan, Karen Po and Anne LeClerc forsharing their research. An equally big thank you also goes to LUSH forproviding individual self-care packages to everyone who aended the meeng.
