Extremadura as a logistic hub of southwest Europe.The future increase of goods transit due to Panama´s canal upgrading, the super saturated hubs of Rotterdam and Algeciras and the recent approval of the Atlantic corridor by the European Commission, as one of the 10 priority corridors represent an interesting opportunity for high capacity direct connection to the principal European logistic hubs.

The trade between Extremadura and the United States has increased significantly in recent years. Exports have increased with an annual compound growth rate of 20.9 % (2009-2013).

The most dynamic areas are the cork and its manufactured products, canned vegetables and tobacco, which account for 81 % of the total exports to that country.

The number of companies in Extremadura that have exported to the United States has doubled since 2009, reaching 180.

Although there was a decrease of imports from the USA due to the economic crisis, we can see a significant recovery in 2013 with an increase of 55.7 % compared to 2012.

Euronuts is a Project lead by PepsiCo to grow peanuts on a large scale for the first time in Europe.

Biomass cultivation and pioneer energy facilities

Ence, Energía y Celulosa is the first European company in terms of production of the pulp of eucalyptus and it is a leader in Spain in the generation of forest biomass for the production of renewable energy.

The plant of generation of renewable electricity from biomass has an installed capacity of 20MW.

Acciona, SA, is a Spanish conglomerate group dedicated to civil engineering, construction of infrastructure and energy production from renewable resources.

Acciona has built a plant to convert biomass in the town of Miajadas with an installed capacity of 16MW.

Vegenat is a company involved with the sector of Clinical Nutrition. Its strategy is the innovation and its products are present in over 40 countries.

This initiative of the Government of Extremadura and Telefónica aims to lure projects with high entrepreneurial talent, for its acceleration, enhancement and future development.

TED Badajoz

Extremadura is a Start-Up region since it has the best environment for the entrepreneurs to develop.

EXTREMADURA OPEN FUTURETo enhance the productivity and competitiveness of companies in the region, an agreement with Microsoft was signed. This Agreement includes the creation of an “innovation lab”, a center of innovation for entrepreneurs, SMEs and the education community. Microsoft will provide the access to BizSpark program to entrepreneurs and technology-based new companies.

Extremadura and the Enterprise Forum Global (MITEF) foundation, under the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, signed a collaboration agreement with the aim to promote innovation and the tech based start-ups in the region.

Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Center: development of R + D + I projects in the field of biotechnology.

Scientific Technological Park of Extremadura: FUNDECYT-PCTEX with two locations, in Badajoz and Caceres, it develops and promotes R + D + I projects in the technological field. It belongs to the European network Enterprise.

European Business and Innovation Center (CEEI). It aims to promote innovation, diversification of productive activity and technological and economic development of Extremadura.

Historical and Cultural Heritage

Caceres. The old town of Caceres is one of the most complete and better conserved European medieval towns. It consists of buildings from the Middle Age and the Renaissance.

Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe: Facing the Plaza Mayor (main square), from the top of the stairs, the beautiful Gothic façade of the church of the sanctuary dominates de city.

Mérida. Founded in 25 B.C. by Roman Emperor Octavio Augusto. The grandiosity of its archeological ensemble makes it one of the most important and extensive in Europe.

MEIAC (Ibero-American Museum of Contemporary Art) and Helga de Alvear. Two large museum centers offer the best of contemporary art.

Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico of Mérida. Its sixty editions support the prestige of this Greco-Roman theater festival. The only festival in the world which is represented in three Roman theatres (Mérida, Medellin and Regina).

Womad-Cáceres. Ethnical and multicultural music and dance festival in which groups of the five continents perform.

Nature, historical heritage, art, gastronomy and tradition have come together in Extremadura. Its three enclaves declared World Heritage by the UNESCO make this region a true open-air museum.
