EXTREME WEATHER WARNING

We would sincerely like to thank all parents and relatives who helped us on Friday afternoon by picking up their students early. Weather warnings had predicted a large storm at student pick up time so we made the decision to send out a request via the school SMS alert system for parents who were free to pick up students early. The aim of this was to avoid massive congestion at 3.30 and ensure the safe pick up of our students during the predicted storm. Whilst this storm arrived earlier than expected and cleared by pick up time, this support definitely helped to stagger the pick up time and reduce traffic issues. I would like to thank parents for their support and the staff who assisted in the coordination of the pick up ( some barefoot in the rain!) It is sometimes difficult to make a decision such as this when our weather is so unpredictable but hope you will all agree that it is better to be ‘safe than sorry!’

2018 Staffing With approximately 405 students and in an effort to keep grade sizes low we have decided to increase to 18 grades in 2018. To accommodate 18 classes this has meant that many grade levels have had to move to other areas of the school – please refer to the map. Whilst this may not be ideal, I am sure you will agree that having smaller grades is the preferable option. You will also notice on the lists provided that the names of some of our 2017 staff members do not appear as we are sadly losing several of our fabulous teachers. We sincerely thank Hannah Nelson, Tobi Hailey and Karina Bartlett for their hard work and commitment to the school and the students in their care. All of these staff have had a great impact on our students and school and will be sadly missed. We wish them all the best for their new endeavours. With staff leaving we have new appointments and will be welcoming a new teacher to grade prep – Sarah Wilde and a new teacher to grade 2. We look forward to these new teachers joining our fabulous staff and being a part of the Tyabb Primary School Community.

Last Day

As parents will be aware the dismissal time for the end of term 1, 2 and 3 is 2.30pm. Department of Education & Training regulations allow dismissal time to be 1.30pm on the last day of the school year (Friday 22nd December) if four hours of school time have been conducted. As such school will operate on the last day as follows: 9.00-11.00am Class time 11.00-11.30am Recess 11.30-1.30pm Class time

There will be a whole school assembly at 12.30pm until about 1.15pm (venue to be advised depending on the weather and the availability of the hall which still contains the artroom). Students will then return to their classroom for dismissal. As we will not be having a lunch break it is suggested that students be provided with a large snack to consume at recess.

HPV – HUMAN POWERED VEHICLES

Last week I travelled to Maryborough to see some of our Grade 5 and 6 students compete in the annual RACV Energy Breakthrough. This is an exciting program designed to provide opportunities for students, teachers, parents and local industry to work together to design and construct a vehicle, a machine or innovation in technology that represents an energy breakthrough. Thousands of students ranging in age from primary to secondary competed in a variety of events including creating water vehicles, building bridges, making machines from recycled material and racing pushcarts and human powered vehicles. This year our students competed in the Primary Triathlon event. This involved scrutineering and checking the safety of the vehicles and answering detailed questions about the trike. The children then competed in an obstacle course, time trials and an eight hour endurance race. Our teams, called the Tyabb Pythons and Tyabb Cobras did extremely well. Congratulations to the following children – Tyabb Cobras – Emily, Zoe, Brianna, Charlotte, Miller, Jagg, Ben and Jackson and Tyabb Pythons – Mia, Mercedes, Billie, Milly, Georgia, Logan, Riley and Sean. You can all be very proud of yourselves.

NEW ADDITIONS

Our students were very excited to see our new additions to the playground. We recently had some new games painted on our concrete and asphalt including snakes and ladders, hop scotch and four square. Next year we hope to add to these with further four square, giant chess board and alphabet snake. Thank you Mrs Grinsted for organising new games for our students to play at playtimes.

Curriculum Corner

An Important Note About Reading

Dear Parents, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read with your children over the Christmas break and have them read to you. I’m sure it will come as no surprise to you that when you stop practising important reading skills, children find it difficult to maintain the skills that they have developed throughout the year and can regress.

Read with your child every day

Regular reading routines are essential to developing effective reading habits.

Set aside a time every day when you and your child can read together, and another time when you can discuss your favourite parts of the book. Being a reading role model by reading to your child is also an important aspect to reading. This is regardless of how old or independent at reading your child is.

If you are reading with your child and they come to a word that they don’t know or aren’t sure of, remember the following simple rules:

Wait: Give your child a chance to figure out the word on their own. Don’t be the instant word factory and supply the word – help your child to be a resourceful reader by allowing them time to gather more information and clues. Ask: Does that make sense? Does the picture give you a clue? Could you read on for more information? Asking these questions reminds your child of the different strategies they can use to figure out what the text is saying. Then: If the child is still stuck on that word, ask them to skip it and read on. You can always drop that word into the conversation as you turn the page. This supplies the unknown word and has the added advantage of not shaming the child for being wrong. One of the best gifts that you can give your child over the festive season is to spend time with them finding, sharing and exploring exciting books.

Happy Christmas

Tyabb Primary School would like to offer parents/guardians the opportunity to pay their school expenses using Centrepay. What is Centrepay? Centrepay is a voluntary bill-paying service that is free for Centrelink customers. Through Centrepay, a Customer can authorise Centrelink to deduct regular amounts from their Centrelink payments to pay their bills and expenses to a School or Business. Centrepay deductions of $20 or more per fortnight per child can be used to pay for:

Fees and charges for Book packs and Essential Items and any related educational expenses including equipment, incursions and excursions, camps and swimming. Benefit to parents: The money is debited from their Centrelink payments and sent to the school before being deposited into their bank account. The school receipts and allocates to outstanding charges in consultation with the parent. This eliminates the need for parents to ‘put money aside’ or use a credit card and there is no requirement for them to come to the school to pay their account. $20 per fortnight per child in years P-2 and $30 per fortnight per child in years 3-6 for a full year will cover Essential Items and together with the Government’s Camps, Sport & Excursion Funding (CSEF) should also cover the cost of camps/excursions/incursions. Parents can include an end date, a target amount or keep it open-ended. The deduction can be amended or cancelled at any time by contacting the school and completing a new form. What next?: Please contact the school office (phone or email [email protected]) for a form to be sent home or to answer any questions you may have. Please return the completed form to the office and your application will be processed through Centrepay. Your deductions can start immediately or a date of your choosing. Please don’t send your application directly to Centrelink as your unique account number is required for identification when the school receives the fortnightly reports from Centrepay.

This term P1/A, 1A, 1B and P1/A have been learning

about Community Helpers and the different types of

people that help out in our local community. We were

lucky enough to have a visit from the Tyabb CFA who

taught us about the importance of fire plans, the

uniforms worn by firefighters and what to do if

there is a fire near you. The students got to explore

the fire truck, sounding the siren and the horn and

were even able to have a go of the big fire hose! We

would like to say a big thank you to David Strang and

the other members of the CFA for coming to visit

and teaching us about fire safety.

GRADE 5 POETRY

Dance by Abbi

Stomp, clash, bang! “Sorry for party rocking…”

The song sang, it was time to start dancing.

In dance class

The air is full of energy

As we look in the glass,

Gorgeous faces we see.

Finally we finish the dance.

It’s time to go home now.

We march to the door like little ants.

I wake up with sore muscles… Owwwww!

Snow by Gabby

Snow falls now and after.

Children’s laughter; here and farther.

Fire lit

Crackle. Burn.

As it grew warmer, the flames rose higher.

Fire sizzle. Snow melts.

Morning glow a surprising sight,

The shimmer from the flurry’s light

My happiness starts to shine through the darkness.

Friendship by Mason

Friends bend, doesn’t matter

We won’t lose each other.

Friends link like an invincible chain.

Invincible, unbreakable, unbendable.

Camping by Ava

Peaceful, quite Summer night,

Sitting relaxing under the moonlight.

Feet in the water, being a daughter,

Riding on the bikes all day.

Broom! Broom! The engine starts,

As I jump on the bike, getting ready to dart.

Fast, the slow and off I go,

Speeding on the bikes all day.

Dreams come true?

The bush is a loo!

Exploring the deep dark forest all day.

We are playing ball and bat,

When we see a wombat.

Bursting with excitement,

As we treasure it all day.

Sunsets by Ruby

Although the sun is setting

And you’re right here by my side

I don’t know everything is going to be alright

And the truth to the matter is still unknown.

We tried and tried

But nothing was on our mind.

Strength is what we need but it’s hard when we’re so far

From the truth being told

To ourselves safe and alone

This is our home.

The Fallen by Henry

Lots of bends,

Now we’re here.

We give a cheer but something’s near.

We run and hide,

We live and breathe with a strife,

Music News: A Busy Time. Instrumental Concert: Well done to all the

students who performed in the Instrumental Concert

on Wednesday 29th November. It was a hot, but

great evening showcasing the varying abilities,

talents and improvements made throughout the

year. This is due to the wonderful efforts of the

teachers. My thanks to Julia Furneaux – piano,

Kristen Furneaux – piano, Mark Berry – guitar,

Catherine King – flute, Noel Tenny - drums and

Jordan Mills – vocals. A big thank you to our grade

6 announcers who did a fine job at the concert.

Elderly Excursion: On Friday 1st December the

Choir and Band visited two elderly villages to

spread some Christmas cheer to older members of

our community. Accompanying us were Mrs

Bartlett, Kym Barker and Kirsten Lindsay. Many

thanks to these ladies. We firstly headed off to

Craigcare in Mt Martha. This was our first time

there and we were very well received. The students

were given some morning tea with homemade

shortbread. Very yummy and festive. Due to the

very wet weather we could not go to the park for a

break, but continued on to Somercare in

Somerville. We had our lunch there before

performing. Again the residences loved to see the

children and the performance went well. We had a

lovely time with both groups of senior citizens and

the children enjoyed meeting them, singing and

having a chat. The children were complimented on

their performances and behaviour. Great work

everyone.

COMING UP:

Carols By Candlelight: On Friday 15th

December the Carols Choir comprising students

from grades 2 to 6 will sing at the Somerville

the Carols at 7pm. This is a family event and all are

invited to attend. Those performing please be

dressed in your finest “Christmasy” clothing and

accessories. We are singing 2 songs and have

practiced on Tuesday lunchtimes. Thanks to all

those students and families who are coming along

and to support the Carols and Tyabb Primary

School.

Sports Arena

On Thursday, 30th of November, students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 represented Tyabb at the District Triathlon held at the Crib Point Swimming Pool and Oval. It was an extremely hot day with the temperature getting above 30 degrees. Students either competed in the individual leg where they did the riding, swimming and running parts themselves or competed as part of a team doing one of those legs. All students put in a fantastic effort with some great team finishes and individual results. For everyone to be as committed as they were and doing their best during the heat was fantastic to see. Well done to Ben of 6C who competed in the individual race, coming first overall. Fantastic job to all Grade 6 participants as this is the last event they will do for Tyabb Primary. Thank you to all the family members who came out to support everyone. There were many of you and it was great to see. Thanks to Yas, Miss Riley and Miss Hailey for doing a great job looking after everyone, making sure they had plenty of sunscreen on and staying hydrated.
