DRAGGING CUSHIONS OUTSIDE...

‘The first outdoor sofa’. A daring statement, but this really is the next big thing. Since the birth of Extremis, we have been convinced that the difference between indoors and outdoors will disappear. Our gardens are becoming one of our most important living spaces. Allow us to argue that it is mostly a time-consuming chore to drag cushions, especially with our unpredictable Belgian weather. Water-resistant cushions quickly become dirty and grubby and, above all, they do not feel soft. Extremis had already been looking for a solution to this for a

very long time, and has now come up with the Walrus: it was named after the impressive mammal that braves water, weather and wind with its thick, smooth hide. What is unique about this brand-new design is the manner in which two different materials are combined in order to fulfil the seemingly irreconcilable requirements of high comfort levels, aesthetics and ultimate weather resistance. Unzip. Ready. Finally! ◁

I. Intussen verscheen heer Appetijt, en dan zetten zij zich op het goede moment aan tafel. Bij de aanvang van het maal las men Gargantua, tot hij aan de wijn toe was, de een of andere vermakelijke historie uit de oude wapenfeiten voor. Daarna zette men de lektuur voort, als dat behagen gaf, of begonnen ze vrolijk samen te babbelen, elkaar onderhoudend, de eerste maanden, over de deugddoende vermogens, de hoedanigheid, de goede werking en de aard van hetgeen aan hun tafel werd opgediend: brood, water ,wijn, zout, vlezen, vis, vruchten, groenten, kruiden en hoe die werden toebereid.

II. ‘Vooruit,’ zei Pantagruel,’ laten we een stukje jool hebben, kinders, en er wat bij morsen, want deze hele maand is het goed drinken.’ Toen werden de flessen bij hopen onthalsd, en met de proviand van het kamp maakten zij goede sier.

Gargantua en Pantagruel zijn de beroemdste reuzen uit de Europese letterkunde. Groot, sterk, levenslustig, intelligent, vooruitstrevend en verzot op de goede dingen des levens, zo leren we vader en zoon kennen in de boeken van François Rabelais. In 1994 liet Dirk Wynants zich door Rabelais inspireren bij het ontwerp van de iconische tuintafel Gargantua: een sterk en duurzaam meubelstuk waaraan mensen samen kunnen genieten van goed weer, goede maaltijden en goede gesprekken. ‘Samen met Gargantua ontstond Extremis, Dirk Wynants’ designbedrijf. Nu, precies twintig jaar later, viert Wynants deze verjaardag met het ontwerp Pantagruel. Een aardje naar zijn vaartje. Pantagruel is robuust, elegant en sober. Het tafelblad met lazy Susan, draaischijf voor lekkernijen, brengt mensen van alle leeftijden samen en maakt het hen gemakkelijk. Een tool for togetherness, gerief voor gezelligheid, dat men kan doorgeven aan de volgende generaties, inclusief de goede herinneringen.

Om de verjaardag extra in de verf te zetten, publiceert Extremis voor

zijn klanten een fraai vormgegeven boekje over Gargantua en Pantagruel, waarin schrijfster Leen Huet haar licht laat schijnen over de reuzen én hun tafels. Iedereen die eigenaar is van een Gargantua

of Pantagruel tafel, krijgt alvast een gratis exemplaar.

Gargantua et Pantagruel sont les géants les plus célèbres de la littérature européenne. Grands, forts, joyeux, intelligents, progressistes et épicuriens : voici ces deux géants, père et fils, tels que nous les décrit François Rabelais. En 1994, Dirk Wynants s’est inspiré du personnage de Rabelais pour la création de Gargantua, sa célèbre table de jardin : un meuble solide et durable qui permet, dès les beaux jours, de partager de délicieux repas ou d’agréables moments en famille ou entre amis. La table Gargantua fut le premier produit conçu par Dirk Wynants (1964), dessinateur et fondateur de la marque Extremis. Le succès de cette création a permis à la marque de se développer. A l’occasion du 20è anniversaire de ce modèle et de l’entreprise, Wynants présente le descendant de Gargantua, une table à la fois robuste, élégante et sobre, baptisée Pantagruel. Le dessus de la table, qui intègre une Lazy Susan (un

plateau tournant pour les friandises), invite jeunes et moins jeunes à s’asseoir autour de la table pour partager un moment de convivialité. Pantagruel se veut rassembleur, c’est un objet de plaisir pour des moments

agréables qui pourra se transmettre aux générations suivantes, ainsi que le souvenir de ces instants de bonheur partagé.

Gargantua and Pantagruel are the most famous giants in European literature. Large, strong, high-spirited, intelligent, progressive and crazy about the good things in life; this is how we get to know father and son in the books of François Rabelais. In 1994, Dirk Wynants drew inspiration from Rabelais when designing the iconic garden table Gargantua: a strong and sustainable piece of furniture at which people can enjoy good weather, good meals and good conversations together. Dirk Wynants’ design firm, Extremis, was created together with Gargantua. Now, exactly twenty years later, Wynants is celebrating this anniversary with the design Pantagruel. A chip off the old block. Pantagruel is robust, elegant and sober. The table top with lazy Susan, a rotating tray for delicacies, brings people of all ages together and makes it easy for them. A tool for togetherness, convenient for conviviality, which one can pass on to the next generations, including the good memories.

MARSHMALLOWS

Place the sugar, 280g of the invert sugar and the water in a saucepan and cook until the thermometer shows 110°C. Add this syrup to the remaining 400g of invert sugar. Mix it in a food processor with a flat dough hook until it has the consistency of beaten egg white. Take the gelatine out of the cold water, squeeze out any excess water, and cook it briefly in a small saucepan over low heat until it is melted. Add the melted gelatine immediately to the mixture in the food processor. Line a baking tray with a silicone baking mat, set a rectangular baking ring on top of it and pour the mixture into it. Let it rest overnight at room temperature. Run a knife around the inside of the baking ring and cut the marshmallows into whatever shapes you want. Dust them with icing sugar.
