National Coastwatch Institution Registered Charity 1045645
National Coastwatch Institution is a Uniformed Organisation
…and it is a matter of great pride that NCI Watchkeepers wear uniform when on
watch. The NCI uniform, which closely follows the marine tradition, gives the
Watchkeeper a recognisable identity, air of authority and ability, which has proved
essential when dealing with members of the public in emergency situations. It offers a visual professional equality and bearing and demands respect when dealing with
both members of the statutory authorities and members of the public.
HEADWEAR
Headwear is an option. Stations may choose
between:
1) A traditional Navy blue woollen peaked Breton
Fisherman’s style peaked
cap, shown left with
embroidered NCI Cap badge.
2) A Plain Navy blue
Baseball-style cap shown
Right, plain peak, with
rear adjustment for size,
and NCI Embroidered cap
badge (One size fits all)
3) A standard plain Navy blue Beret, (shown left) a
flat round soft hat, usually woollen, with a tight-
fitting leather headband, normally size adjustable at
the rear. Headwear should display the small NCI embroidered
cap badge. Badge is worn over the left eye and
beret inclined to the right of the wearer as

LADIES HEADWEAR OPTION This is an optional team decision

Tricorn hat, with black band surmounted by an embroidered
NCI cap badge.
These hats are available from Miller Rainer to order, and the
bullion cap badge available separately from C & M Medals. Second user caps normally available for purchase on eBay.

Navy ‘wrens’ Tricorn Hat
National Coastwatch Institution –Stations Manual
Headwear – Male option This is an optional team decision
At the request of many NCI teams the option of a white-
top peaked cap is listed as an adult male option, not for
cadet use. The cap is of the traditional Royal Navy peaked cap
pattern, but may be substituted by a Police (traffic) style
cap with integral white top. The cap band is Navy blue or
black, with a standard black leather chin strap. The cap is supplied with a plain peaked, although some may
have slight embellishment. Peaks with Laurels or oak
leaf embellishments are not allowed.
New white-top hats available from Toye Kenning & Spencer to order and the bullion cap badge available separately from C & J Medals of Reading (Details in NCI Supplier
Database). Second user hats normally available for purchase on eBay.
Headwear – Religious option
National Coastwatch Institution do, of course, respect
members with religious requirements who may choose to
wear the headrest appropriate to their beliefs (eg: Turban - Dastar or the Sikh patka or the smaller Dhamala turban).
It is not impolite to request the wearer to provide a navy
blue or white garment to match the NCI uniform code. An
NCI cap badge (from NCI Shop at NCI Headquarters)
may be worn on the head-dress if desired.

with two breast pockets and epaulettes, though plain

The shirt will be worn inside the trousers as is traditional, and not over the trousers
