Eyes are one of the most important, but also the most vulnerable, parts of the body that need the very best in protection to avoid injury when tackling hazardous workplace tasks.

uvex has developed a range of eyewear solutions which takes into account that whilst style and looks are secondary, they are very important in persuading people to wear safety eyewear.

Working in conjunction with the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, uvex has developed a new class of safety lens, uvex hi res. The new state-of-the-art lens means that aberrations are reduced to a minimum to provide maximum vision quality. So what does this mean to the wearer?

optidur NC coated lenses are extremely tough and scratch-resistant on both sides. Water and oil-based dirt can be cleaned off more easily because of improved non-stick properties. The optidur NC lens coating is extremely resistant to chemicals.

The unique supravision HC-AF lens coating: extremely scratch-resistant coating on the outside and permanently anti-fog on the inside is ideal for goggles, close-fitting spectacles, or physical work; such as in foundries, construction sites, labouring, operating machinery and quarrying.

ultradura is an inexpensive coating that gives lenses a good level of scratch-resistance on both sides.

infradur PLUS is a scratch resistant lens coating (both sides) for welding lenses. Protects against ultraviolet and infrared radiation as well as glare. Minimises spark damage.

optidur 4C PLUS lens coating combines four features in one, making the lens permanently anti-fog, scratch-resistant, and antistatic both inside and outside.

One of the primary causes of eye injuries is individuals not wearing eye protection. When pressed to explain why not, the answers include: “they were uncomfortable”, “they mist up or scratch too easily”, and “they don’t fit”. Overcoming these human factors will go a long way to increasing usage and compliance and reducing the risk of injuries.

Product selection is clearly a critical issue and should result in a perfect match between the application, the product features, and wearer acceptance.

AwarenessThe wearer needs to understand why and when eye protection should be worn, and be reminded of the potential damage that might be caused if it’s not worn, or worn correctly.

SuitabilityThe ‘right’ product will provide the suitable protection required for the task and environment. Product features, such as lens coatings or shades, enhance the wearability of the product in that environment. It also needs to be compatible with other items of PPE that are worn.

Comfort and fitBased on the adage ‘The best eye protection is the one that gets worn’ – comfort and fit have to be high on the agenda. Fully adjustable side arms will give an individual fit for the wearer. A frame and lens style that fits the shape and size of the face will give optimum protection and be more comfortable.

Very often the protection that PPE provides goes unnoticed and it’s not until an injury occurs that the ‘value’ of PPE is recognised!

uvex products with clear lenses offer 100% protection from UVA, UVB and UVC radiation, in accordance with EN166. If no protection is worn over a long period of time, the short-wave blue light, in the visible colour spectrum up to 400nm, can damage the eyes. All uvex clear polycarbonate lenses filter UV rays up to 400nm.

UV protection up to 400 nanometres

All uvex lenses which are offered for welding protection filter IR and UV rays as well as providing glare protection. The welding protection lenses all comply with EN169.

As well as providing complete protection against UV rays, uvex tinted lenses protect the wearers from glare. The recognition of signal colours remains unaffected in accordance with EN172.

Selecting the most suitable lens coating for your eyewear makes for a safer work place and prolongs the life of the lens.

Dust or humidity?A dusty environment, such as a foundry, construction site or a quarry, requires a high level of scratch-resistance. A humid environment may require anti-fog properties.

Put the two together – such as with physical work and/or the wearing of goggles or close-fitting spectacles, and there is a need for a combination lens coating such as the uvex supravision HC-AF: scratch-resistant on the outside– anti-fog on the inside.

How to select the correct lens shade

Clear (1,2 shade)The clear lens is suitable for virtually all light conditions and workplace environments. 100% protection against UV radiation. Complies with EN166 + EN170.

Silver Mirror (1,7 shade)This sunglare lens is ideal for those people who constantly move in and out of different light conditions; the ‘indoor/outdoor’ lens is widely used by fork-lift truck and wagon drivers. The mirror coating helps with glare from bright reflective surfaces such as concrete, water and glass. Full colour recognition makes identification of colours in the workplace safe and easy. 100% protection against UV radiation. Complies with EN166 + EN172.

Amber (1,2 shade)The amber tint has a light-enhancing effect making it ideal for low-light environments, dawn and dusk and areas with artificial lighting. Also good for inspection type work; particularly when concentrating on surface quality because of the enhanced contrast effect this lens provides. 100% protection against UV radiation.Complies with EN166 + EN170.

Grey (2,5 shade)A grey sunglare filter, ideal for when sunlight and glare may be a hazard. As well as providing protection against glare the grey lens shade provides full colour recognition making identification of colours in the workplace safe and easy. 100% protection against UV radiation. Complies with EN166 + EN172.

Green Welding Filter Welding filters protect against radiation resulting from gas welding processes, such as UV and IRradiation, as well as visible glare. Different protective levels are available depending on the application.Complies with EN166 + EN169.

Brown SCT (2,5 shade)A brown SCT 400 (Spectrum Control Technology) sunglare filter; ideal for when sunlight and glare may bea hazard. The brown lens shade provides full colour recognition making identification of colours in the workplace safe and easy. 100% protection against UV radiation. Complies with EN166 + EN172.

Care and Maintenance of safety eye protection

Rinse dust and coarse particles off the lens under running water

Spray small amount of cleaning fluid onto both sides of the lens

Using a lens cleaning tissue wipe the lens inside and out

Use a circular motion; do not scrub the lens backwards and forwards

Do not clean the lens dry, allow the residue of fluid to evaporate

For best results, store the spectacles in a clean pouch or bag when not in use

EN166 Specification for personal eye protection applies to all types of eye protection used against various hazards, as encountered in industry, laboratories, educational establishments, DIY activities etc, which are likely to damage the eye or impair vision.
