LED Shortcomings Customer Challenge Customer Need
Binning: LEDs are spec’d by chromaticity, brightness, and power
Difficult to achieve repeatable color point
Flexibility at production time
Temp Variation: LEDs degrade over temp, different color LEDs degrade at different rates
Difficult to maintain color point over time
Color control during production

HB LED Challenges: Temperature
Temperature effects• Light output decreases• Wavelength increases• Forward voltage decreases
LEDs degrade at different rates
Added complexity in controlling a color mixed output over time
8 Cypress Confidential
Firmware, firmware, firmware• Map out possible permutations &
incorporate into code – very inefficient
How it could be done

Use specific bin for a LED• 10-15% premium for mandating
specific HB LED bins IF available

Software• PSoC Express offers unparalleled time to market performance• Binning compensation improves color accuracy• Temperature Compensation Algorithm offers color stability
Integration• Configurable dimmers support up to 16 LED channels• Dimmers independently programmable from 8-32 bits of
resolution
Technology• PrISM method reduces low frequency blinking inherent with
PWMs• Spread spectrum signal lowers radiated EMI
EZ-ColorTM HB LED Controller Advantages
19 Cypress Confidential
EZ-ColorTM Technology: PrISM
PrISM creates a spread spectrum signal, which provides significant EMI reduction and reduces low frequency flicker of HB LEDs

Color Mixing Basics
• Mixing Red, Green, and Blue generates a color
• Red + Green = Yellow
• Blue + Red = Magenta
• CIE chart developed to provide science behind color
• Color space defined with (x,y,Y) coordinates
• x and y define chromaticity (color)
• Y define luminance (brightness)
23 Cypress Confidential
Color Mixing Basics
• HB LEDs defined in (x,y) coordinates
Red: (.68, .29)
Green: (.23, .63)
Blue: (.15, .06)
• These HB LEDs form a color gamut
• Output any color within the triangle
