There was a commotion outside the School on Thursday 5th May.

Fifteen local persons staggered up the hill from a nearby hostelry intent on casting their votes for I M Standing -Around, the local Drinkers Party can-didate. Unfortunately they’d checked the time on the half-hunter that be-longed to Phil Glass, the wealthiest of the group. As his partner, Tina Larga, pointed out, ”That old pocket watch came from ‘is grandpa an’ it never kept time proper. I shoulda guessed we’d be late – them officials shut the door in our face an’ disenfranchised us! It’s a disgrace.”

Mrs B Phair, the polling booth of-ficer said later to In Touch, ”Rules is rules. These people could have voted anytime from seven this morning and we have to close up at ten prompt.”

A distressed Mr Standing-Around was seen in the pub standing around but not standing a round. With just fifteen more votes he would not have lost his deposit.

The election was won by Liberal Conservacrat, Miss Ina Dither.

What a difference from our April meeting when we were joined by our neighbouring Institute members. This month it was a case of spot the member. It’s May, when we discuss the resolution to be put before the delegates attending the National Federation AGM. Last year it was Save the Bees, this year we are urging HM Government to introduce clear and mandatory country of origin la-belling on all meat, poultry and fish products sold in this country. Cur-rently, if meat and so on is labelled British, it needn’t mean that it comes from Britain. Under EU legislation the country of origin is the country where a product undertook it’s last “significant change.” So a pork pie can be labelled British if it was made into a pie in Britain, even if the pork it contains comes from pigs born, reared and slaughtered elsewhere. It made us think when we voted on the resolution. Well, we have put our penn’orth forward ready for the big day on 2nd June.

Our President, Mary Cowley, reported on the Home Econom-ics Group meeting which some of us had attended earlier in the week when Tim Fee, a line producer on Emmerdale, told of the day when HM the Queen visited the set. He illustrated his talk with both slides and film. A most enjoyable evening we all agreed.

We heard that our entry for the Institute’s programme hadn’t made it into the next round of the National Federation competition. Never mind, it’s the taking part that counts they say. Jane Ostler brought along her entry for the Lincolnshire Show, a lovely embroidered Christ-

mas decoration which was much admired. Good luck Jane.

County has more events lined up for us - Scrabble, short mat bowls and a painting day. And not forget-ting the invitation to Corby’s fashion show, a trip to Harlaxton and Bar-rowby and finally one to Denton. Busy, busy, busy as usual.

We recently did a bit of baking for the Primary School PTFA event, and we have received an invitation to take part at the village fete in July (no chocolate tombola this time after last year’s meltdown). There is also a new quiz in preparation, so look out for it, coming soon at all good outlets as they say.

Barbara Moore won the competi-tion for a single bloom, with Mary Cowley the runner-up. I was lucky enough to win the super book on the Crown Jewels donated by Keith Hanson at our last meeting. Dora Farley was the other winner. Bett Pope helped Barbara with the re-freshments, Dora manned the bring and buy stall and we finished the af-ternoon with an impromptu quiz.

Our next meeting on 17th June will be interesting. We have John Mallindine with his hearing dog for the deaf (lots of “ahs” I bet). So, if you would like to hear a talk with a difference, join us in the Village Hall at 2pm, visitors are most welcome as always.

Dot Williams

Colsterworth & District Gardeners and Allotment Holders Association

We got down and dirty at the last meeting, planting up

the troughs for the church railings. We’re all looking after them now so they are ready for hanging on Sat-urday 5th June. David and Roy will be there at l0am so please make sure your trough is there in time. If you have difficulty with this then you can either leave your trough just behind the railings in the Church Yard on Friday night or early Saturday morn-ing or telephone David on 860638 for somebody to collect it.

Later, we were treated to some un-usual gardening tips by Ros Hibbins, one of our members from Croxton Kerrial. They ranged from compan-ion planting to making a compost bin from an oil drum. This very talented lady even showed us how to do topiary and it rounded off a lovely evening.

Not surprisingly Ros won the Flower of the Month competition with a lovely Iris and Rona was sec-ond with a Clematis. Gillian held a culinary stall which was well attend-ed and had some interesting items for sale. She will be holding a ‘Tin Stall’ at the next meeting so anything in a tin would be gratefully received. This will be our last fundraising until October apart from our stall at the Village Garden Fete on 10th July - which I hope you are all growing plants for!

Our speaker for June will be Ray Biggs from Grimsthorpe Estate who will give an illustrated talk on the Garden Evolution of an English Es-tate. As always, visitors and friends would be most welcome. So see you all in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on 14th June.

The Grizzled Skipper is a butter-fly whose numbers have halved in recent years. In 2008 its only two Lincolnshire sites were in South Kesteven, one of which being in Colsterworth. This year it has been rediscovered on the Woolsthorpe Line. The Grizzled Skipper’s main stronghold in the county is in Twyford Wood. The Dinghy Skip-per, another scarce butterfly has also been found at more than one site in Colsterworth. Both these butterflies are associated with limestone grassland where their caterpillars’ food plants of Wild Strawberry and Bird’s Foot Trefoil are undisturbed on sunny banks.

It may have been the meander-ing course of the River Witham in fields below Stamford Road, which attracted in some unusual visitors. Three Little Egret were

reported in a garden in this area! Most Field Guides don’t show this bird, related to the Heron, as visit-ing this country at all. Reports by the Lincolnshire Bird Club show that there were only eight records in 1999. However there were large numbers in the County in 2008, mainly at coastal sites. This may have been due to the mild winter

01476 552000The last days of April were warm and sunny and began

a time to celebrate some of the very special plants and animals we have in our parishes. A survey of the Colsterworth Bank Roadside Verge revealed a remarkable spread of a plant scarce in Lincolnshire: Wild Liquorice or Milk Vetch has a small spike of cream flowers which appear in July, half hidden by a sprawl of paired leaflets. South Lincolnshire is on the northern edge of this plant’s range and it is confined to limestone grassland. The bare rock above it is colonis-ing with some interesting plants including Salad Burnet, Weld and Wild Strawberry.

By contrast, other areas are sprouting nettles and the disturbed flat areas at Bridge End have not been reseeded as hoped so giant thistles and docks are flourishing. Wherever roadworks along the Al have been followed by the planting of conservation mixes, cowslips are flourishing.

Natural History Bulletin that year - not a feature of 2010! There were only three locations where the birds nested. Finding them here in May is, therefore, even more unusual.

By the first week of May cuckoos and swifts were back but, at the time of writing, it is not known if the turtle doves have returned.

The limestone plants and the Skipper butterflies depend on a very few sites - the Woolsthorpe Line Reserve, Roadside Verge Nature Reserves and the Twyford Butterfly Sanctuary. These are all managed for wildlife. Most of our wildlife is increasingly vulnerable to all our actions and it is disheart-ening to know that a number of initiatives and the efforts of several people to protect areas and their plants and animals have, as yet, come to nothing. To look for in June

The first damsel and dragonflies will be about. There should be plenty of newly-fledged birds and grassland flowers will be at their best. Shrubby areas, particularly of blackthorn are valuable (and scarce) on our verges. Look for both birds and insects at Bridge End in front of the laid hedge for example, and on Old Post Lane north of the Stainby/North With-am crossroads. The shrubs planted on Stamford Road and on Colster-worth Bank by the Tree For Life have been found to be good for both insects and small mammals.

A touch of colourThe hanging baskets outside the church are to be provided by the wonderfully green-fingered Gardeners and Allotment Holders again this year.

Christian Aid CollectionA small house-to-house round was done this year which when added to donations at the Churches and Open Door, totalled £179.48 for Colsterworth. A special note of thanks from the collectors for the friendly reception (as well as money!) from young as well as old. Donations can still be made and envelopes returned to the Churches. Many, many thanks.
