Riverhead High Wins Close Game From Greenport Southampton at Greenport Friday Night Greenport High School lost a gold- en opportunity last Friday night to turn the tables on their rivals from the county seat when they blew a fourth quarter lead and lost to River- head High School by a 26 to 24 score. The game which was played on the losers' court was hotly contested all the way. Riverhead led during the greater part of the game holding a 6 to 4 first quar- ter advantage, leading 9 to 6 at the half and still having an 18 to 17 edge at the three quarter mark. Greenport tied the score early in the final quar- ter and at one time in this period had a four point lead. However, Riverhead with a rally in the last three minutes of the game overcame the home team's lead and went happily home with a one point victory." Young & Co. have taken a com- manding lead in the Southold Bowling League as the fourth and final round opens this week. The perennial cham- pions took advantage of the fact that they were bowling the last place Old Town Players last week and added three more games to their long column of victories. Although "Doc." Fischer took the measure of George Stelzer and Harry Gagen was soundly thumped In the second game, the I. M. Young boys, although not quite up to par, had enough on the ball to push the Play- ers still further in the cellar. Charlie Bennett dropped 505 pins in the three games to hold his lead over Artie Ga- gen in the race for high individual average. The Southold Yacht Club, who still have a ghost of a chance to overtake the league leaders, must win a large majority of the games in their four postponed matches to stay in the run- ning. In their match on Tuesday night against the Polish Trio, the Yacht Club took two out of three highly con- tested games. All three games were decided by a margin of less than 15 pins. The opening encounter saw some remarkably high scores with the Yacht Club pUlng up 559 pins and the Polish Trio losing with a 540 team score. Bill Smith led the winning team In pin- fall with a 520 pin total. Averette's Red Horses, who are either wry good or very bad had one of their good nl^ts against the Phil Weckes- 6er trio and took the latter Into camp with a three straight win. Lew Davi- son hit 180 average "right on the but- ton" for the three games and his good bowling was the deciding factor in all three wins. His opponent, Phil Mullen, had an pS night and^ only averaged 132. Carstensen 132 118 139 133 146 The SouthoW High School varsity basketball team kept in the running for the second place berth in Section 5 by a 25 to 13 win ov& Hampton Bays on the local court last Friday night. This was the home team's sec- ond triumph of the current season over Hampton Bays High School. South- old's league record now stands at 4 wins and" 3 losses which leaves the boys in a tie with Bridgehampton High School for the runner up honors. "Ooldie" used his second team for nearly three quarters of the game and had very little difficulty scoring against the visitors' defense. The score at half time found Southold leading 17 to 8. Jack Tuthlll with four field goals for a total of 8 points was high scorer for the home team. Kenny with seven points was the only member of the vis- iting squad to collect more than one field goia during the evening. The S. H. S. Junior varsity lost to the Hampton Bays seconds by a 20 to 16 score. On Tuesday evening of this week East Hampton after a close battle for three quarters took a commanding lead in the final period to win a 46 to 36 victory over Southold High School on the losers home court. A fellow named Olson who fiy the way played left for- ward for the visitors was the main fac- tor In the East Hampton win. Mr. Ol- son really "went to town" and dropped in 10 field goals and one foul shot for a total of 21 points. His teammate, McMahon didn't do so bad, collecting 13 points for his night's work. Eddie Skwara led the Southold ca- gers In the scoring colimm with 3 field goals and 5 successful shots from the free throw line for an 11 point total. Pete Ostroskl had 9 points, Jack Tut- hlll, 6, Artie Dlckerson 6 and Charlie Walker 4 to c«mplet« the bap* team's scoring. Although 12 points separated the two teams when the final whistle blew the game was closer than the score In- dicated. For the first three quarters Southold was always in the fight. Mattituck High Loses to Valley Stream 34-32 Although the Mattituck High School varsity basketball team, who recently won the Section 5 championship, lost to the powerful Valley Stream High School quintet in their exhibition game at Valley Stream Saturday night by a score of 34 to 32, the Suffolk County boys gave a very good account of themselves, Valley Stream took an early lead, scoring ten points In the first two minutes, but Mattituck came back and was leading 26 to 22, at the end of the third quarter. The Matti- tuck second team succeeded >in defeat- ing their opponents, 27-26, In another thrilling game. About 100 Mattituck fans accompanied the teams to Valley Stream. Eleven Members of the Squad, ac- companied by Principal A. C. Garelle, Coach Bob Mulr and Thomas Kewln, spent Saturday nl^t and part of Sun- day In New York. They were guests at the Times Square Hotel. The final league game of the season will take place tomorrow (Friday)' night at Mattituck when the Shelter Island High School team plays there. Riverhead High Wins Close Game

Greenport High School lost a gold-en opportunity last Friday night to turn the tables on their rivals from the county seat when they blew a fourth quarter lead and lost to River-head High School by a 26 to 24 score. The game which was played on the losers' court was hotly contested all the way.

Riverhead led during the greater part of the game holding a 6 to 4 first quar-ter advantage, leading 9 to 6 at the half and still having an 18 to 17 edge at the three quarter mark. Greenport tied the score early in the final quar-ter and at one time in this period had a four point lead. However, Riverhead with a rally in the last three minutes of the game overcame the home team's lead and went happily home with a one point victory."
