INTRODUCTION

Any sustainable socio economic development implies improvement in the lives of the peoplethrough activities planned and implemented with their participation Hence, the process of socialchange entails informing, mobilizing and organizing people so that they can identify, articulate andwork for improvement. Training is an integral component of this process where the overall purpose oftraining is learning of new concepts, skills, attitudes, andbehavior. It is in tended for not only ‘kn o .c’ingmore’ but ‘behaving differently’. In this context, the Government of India has given due imporranceto the component of ‘training’ in the implementation of different development programmes,~especiallythose related to water supply and environmental sanitation, with UNICEF playing a supportive role

This catalogue is an attempt to summarize information on different training programmesconducted under the Water and Sanitation programme. It lists and describes the training programmesconducted at the national and state levels with UNICEF assistance in different projects. Informationon each of the training programmes includes details on the Title and Objectives of the training,Participants’Profile, Trainers Team/Agency, Subject Content, Organization and Methodology, TrainingMaterials used, Evaluation, and, Folio wup of the training.

This catalogue is the ffrst step towards consolidation and institutionalization of trainingprogrammes conducted under the Water and Sanitation programme. Any comments and suggestionsfor its improvement are welcome.

Concept of protected Water supply throughrainwater harvesting; Details on quality ofwater collected and stored throughrooftop/surface collection; Designconsiderations based on rainfall, type and costof construction materials, roof area availability,family size, availability of other water supplyoptions; Site selection criteria; Alternativedesigns and materials for con truction;Participation of user groups in planning andimplementation; Construction techniques, thefrcost effectiveness and functional life of units;Demonstration of construction for twoalternative designs; Construction of 4 units inthe households on actual location;Recommendations on feasibility of designs,cost estimates for each design and cost sharingby user groups/panchayats/households, and,delineation of a process for implementation inthe field.

Increase performance of drilling rigs andimprove maintenance.

Engineers (Junior Engineers, AssistantEngineers, Executive Engineers) from the Stategovernment, Drill rig crew and mechanics.

There are a minimum of 4 participants per rigper training and a maximum of 8 participants.Four training courses are held for each of thedrilling rigs annually.

Duratigj~: 3 days, 6 working days, or 9 working daysdepending on the extensiveness required fortraining on certain components of the rig.

Qualified service engineers from respectiveequipment manufacturers or their authorizedagents in India.

Operation, repairs, maintenance,troubleshooting and fault diagnosis on variouscomponents of the drilling rig and theircompressors.

These trainings are held in the districtheadquarters. Hands-on training is given on thedrillingrig.

The service engineer uses specialized tools forgiving training on the rig. Special bookletsprepared by the training companies are usedasreference materials during the sessions.
