With pool ownership comes many years of enjoyment and family memories. Another aspect of pool ownership is that some routine maintenance is required. Unless you are in a position to hire a pool service company that can take care of all your pool maintenance and pool chemical needs, a little bit of work on your part is required. The good news is that there is some wonderful technology available which allows a pool to be virtually maintenance free. These options will allow you to spend far more time enjoying your pool and far less time maintaining it.

A significant maintenance consideration is how you plan to keep your pool clear of debris. In the past this in-volved routine manual vacuuming of the pool – a process that required quite a bit of time and effort. Automatic cleaners (also referred to as robotic or mechanical clean-ers) became available many years ago that do a good job of cleaning the pool floor.

The typical automatic cleaner attaches to the pool with its own hose and moves around in the pool cleaning a path along the way. These cleaners have some drawbacks; they should be removed from the pool whenever you want to use the pool - requiring them to be stored somewhere and then returned to the pool. Not all that difficult or time consuming, but a bit of a nuisance and an eyesore. Another drawback is that these cleaners do not typically clean pool steps, benches, swim outs, etc., necessitating manual brushing on a regular basis. They also will not work in spas. These cleaners are prone to mechanical problems at some point in their lifecycle. You should fac-tor in some repair/maintenance costs with these cleaners.

In-Floor Cleaning And Cir-culation Systems

The latest evolution in automatic pool cleaning systems; the In-floor Cleaning and Circulation system, is a much better, more complete solution to clearing your pool of debris. In-Floor Systems need to be installed during new pool construction. It is cost prohibitive and a major proj-ect to retrofit one of the systems into an existing pool.

Similar in some aspects to a pop-up sprinkler system, cleaning jets are strategically located throughout the pool. These cleaning jets are flush mounted making them nearly invisible. They are activated by water pressure and “pop-up” during their cleaning cycle. They rotate to a new po-sition each time they are activated ultimately completing a complete 360 degree pattern. Cleaning jets not only clean the pool floor and walls, they can also be placed in steps, benches, swim outs, spas, etc., and can keep the pool better then 99% clean when properly installed.

Some additional advantages of In-floor Systems are that your pool is always “swim-ready” – no mechanical cleaner to move out of the way, rendering the pool more aes-thetically pleasing. And because they provide “bottom-to-top” circulation they enhance the heating of the pool and maximize the chemical distribution within the pool. The cleaning jets carry a lifetime warranty to the original pool owner.

Another maintenance responsibility is the important task of properly maintaining the pool water chemistry. Time spent here can be dramatically reduced thanks to the technology available today. Some of the options worth consideration include; Ozone water purifying systems and mineral based systems.

If you want to reduce the amount of chlorine in your pool you should consider an Ozone water purifying sys-tem. Ozone is over two thousand times faster acting than Chlorine at oxidizing and destroying bather load (body oils, suntan lotions, perspiration, etc.) in a swimming pool. This dramatically reduces the amount of chlorine needed to maintain a pool.

Many large cities in the United States now boast the best drinking water in America since they began using Ozone as a purification method. And, it is difficult to find bot-tled water that has does not use Ozone as a purification method. There are many advantages to using ozone in a swimming pool; decreased chemical usage which saves homeowners money in the long run, better water clarity, smoother water feel, no red irritated eyes due to chlora-mines and it is pH neutral. Ozone is also a “green” prod-uct in that the only byproduct is oxygen.

Ozone has a short lifespan in a pool environment which leads to the need to maintain some residual amount of sanitizer in the pool. This is most typically accomplished by maintaining a small amount of chlorine in the pool. This “residual” level of chlorine can be achieved with chlorine tablets.

There are mineral based systems available that help con-trol bacteria, prevent algae and keep the pH neutral so you can further reduce chlorine use. That means you can say goodbye to red stinging eyes, dry itchy skin and fad-ed swimsuits while enjoying crystal clear, soft water for greater swimming enjoyment.

Minerals have been used for centuries. The Romans put silver coins in urns to help maintain water clarity longer. In more recent times, minerals are used every day in the medical industry with tremendous results.

An automatic pool cover might be worth considering. After all, if you keep the debris from getting into the pool you don’t have to worry about getting it out. Just about any pool can be fitted with a retractable cover that not only blocks out dirt and debris, but also provides an added layer of safety when the pool is not in use. These covers are usually installed in such a way that keeps the cover hidden and out of the way, except when the pool is in use. Most of these covers can be customized for any size or shape of pool.

Pool automation systems, to varying degrees of sophis-tication, are available that can further reduce the hom-eowner’s involvement in taking care of the pool and/or spa. Some systems actually monitor the chemicals and automatically adjust the levels via automatic injection systems. Remote controls on these systems allow for the on/off switching of lights, turning on water-features or lights, opening/closing of a pool cover, automatic tem-perature control when a heater is present, or just about anything else you want to control or automate. These control systems can be located inside the home for easy access and often have a remote control system available as an option.

In summary, there are some great options available to make your pool more “maintenance-friendly”. Please consult your pool builder to see which technologies might be of the greatest value for your unique situation.
