A FESTIVAL OF
HYMN SINGING:
CALL TO CONFESSION
Leader: The grace of God overflows for us through Christ Jesus who came into the world to save
sinners. Please join me in the prayer of confession...
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison, verses 1-2 from Hymn 345 “In an Age of Twisted Values”)
In an age of twisted values, we have lost the truth we need. In sophisticated language we have justified our
greed. By our struggle for possessions we have robbed the poor and weak. Hear our cry and heal our na-
tion, your forgiveness, Lord, we seek. We have built discrimination on our prejudice and fear. Hatred swift-
ly turns to cruelty if we hold resentments dear. For communities divided by the walls of class and race, hear
our cry and heal our nation; show us, Lord, your love and grace.

SILENT CONFESSION
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
Leader: Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun.
Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.
People: Praise God for grace and mercy! Thanks be to God.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit that as the scriptures are read and your
word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.
FIRST LESSON - Psalm 2: 1-9
Why do the nations conspire, and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and his anointed,
saying, ‘Let us burst their bonds asunder, and cast their cords from us.’ He who sits in the heavens laughs; the
Lord has them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, ‘I have
set my king on Zion, my holy hill.’ I will tell of the decree of the Lord:He said to me, ‘You are my son; today I
have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your posses-
sion. You shall break them with a rod of iron, and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.’
HYMN 331 - God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand, National Hymn
HYMN 339 - Lift Every Voice and Sing, Lift Every Voice
SECOND LESSON John 17:20-26
‘I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that
they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may
believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one,
as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know
that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I desire that those also, whom
you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you
loved me before the foundation of the world. ‘Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you;
and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that
the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.’

That shall turn their hearts to the right.
A story of truth and mercy,

For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
and the dawning to noonday bright;
And Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth;
The kingdom of love and light.
