family ConneCtion: the twenty-third sunday in ordinary time

A Roman priest, Cornelius was elect-ed Pope to succeed Fabian in an election de-layed fourteen months by Decius’ persecu-tion of the Christians. The main issue of his pontificate was the treatment to be accorded Christians who had been apostasized during the persecution. He condemned those con-fessors who were lax in not demanding pen-ance of these Christians and supported St. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, against Novatus and his dupe, Felicissimus, whom he had set up as an antibishop to Cyprian, when Nova-tus came to Rome. On the other hand, he also denounced the Rigorists, headed by Nova-tian, a Roman priest, who declared that the Church could not pardon the lapsi (the lapsed Christians), and declared himself Pope. How-

ever, his declaration was illegitimate, making him an antipope. The two extremes eventual-ly joined forces, and the Novatian movement had quite a vogue in the East. Meanwhile, Cornelius proclaimed that the Church had the authority and the power to forgive repen-tant lapsi and could readmit them to the sac-raments and the Church after they had per-formed proper penances. A synod of Western bishops in Rome in October 251 upheld Cor-nelius, condemned the teachings of Novatian, and excommunicated him and his followers. When persecutions of the Christians started up again in 253 under Emperor Gallus, Cor-nelius was exiled to Centum Cellae (Civita Vecchia), where he died a martyr probably of hardships he was forced to endure.

finding Joy in the lord by barbara dilly

Conflict and disagreements are a natural part of family life, but families are also where we learn to resolve conflicts with love and respect. As you gather as a family this week, discuss the procedures for resolving disputes in your family. What kinds of things produce disagreements in your family? Do children frequently request the assis-tance of the adults when a disagreement arises? How do the adults respond? In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches his disciples the way in which they are to handle conflict with-in the Christian community of the Church. Read together this Gospel, Matthew 18:15-20. Invite family members

to summarize the steps that Jesus proposes for resolving conflict. How might today’s Gospel inform your family’s handling of disagreements? If you have time, your family might choose to role play how Jesus’ teaching about con-flict resolution might be applied to a disagreement that sometimes occurs in your household. In today’s Gospel, Jesus also promises that he will help those who pray to him with their needs. Pray together that each member of your family will learn to handle conflict in a Christian manner. Pray together the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis.

Why are some people so joyful? And why is it so important that we go to church to express our joy? The Psalm today calls us to “sing joyfully to the Lord.” And at the same time, it warns us against hardening our hearts toward God. That is the challenge, I think, for all of us. Our hard heartedness keeps us from joyfulness. It is evident in many ways. One is in our unwillingness to turn from our wicked ways. Another is in our inabili-ty to love others. But mostly, it is in our inability to love ourselves – to be joyful! The good news of the message of reconciliation is Christ living in and among us so that we can more easily over-come our hard-heartedness and be joyful! Through Christ, we can be more loving, we can be more forgiving, we can be more joyful! One very basic way we can express God’s love for us is to be joyful! If we really accept that the Lord is the rock of our

salvation, we can come into his presence with thanks-giving. Yes, we can be joyful! If we really accept that we are the people the Lord guides, we can be grateful. Yes, we can be joyful! Joy in the presence of God is quite dif-ferent, I think, from happiness as this world defines it. It is much deeper. It is not just about our emotions, it is about our souls. A joyful person is not a happy Pollyan-na who never faces adversity or engages in wickedness. A joyful person is someone who does not refuse to turn away from wickedness when the Lord speaks. Joyful people do not harden their hearts to God. Joyful people are open-hearted redeemed sinners who are grateful. In joy, we bow down in worship and kneel be-fore the Lord. In joy, for our salvation, we come into the Lord’s presence to hear his voice. Let us pray together then, that we will not harden our hearts, but that we will come into God’s presence singing joyfully!

Statement of Bishop Joe S. Vásquez and Auxiliary Bishop Daniel E. Garcia of AustinConcerning the Catastrophic Effects of Hurricane Harvey

Together with our brother bishops, we urge all people of good will to be united with those suffering as a result of the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. We are deeply concerned about the parishes, communities and people that have been and will continue to be impacted by the storm. We urge all people to continue to follow the safety directives of the local emergency management officials. Even as the hurricane has been downgraded, some victims will feel the long-term effects of the system for years to come. We encourage the faithful of the Diocese of Austin to be spiritually united with the communities affected through prayer and support. Because we believe that “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress” (Psalm 46:1), our neighbors require our resolve to help them in their time of need. Considering the unprec-edented flooding and the disheartening circumstances in which our brothers and sisters find themselves, we are re-minded that Jesus requires us to help our neighbors out of mercy and love (cf Luke 10:29-37). Catholic Charities of Central Texas is coordinating our diocesan relief efforts. We encourage you to visit www.ccctx.org for more information on how to offer help and to provide financial assistance for the victims of the storm.

mass PreParation: sePtember 17, 2017, twenty-fourth sunday in ordinary time

First Reading: Sirach 27:30-28:9Those who seek God’s mercy must be merciful toward others.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 103:1-4,9-12A song of praise to God who is kind and merciful.

Second Reading: Romans 14:7-9We belong to the Lord.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 18:21-35 Jesus teaches that we must forgive one another as God has forgiven us.

Trust and unity are important within any community. Jesus teaches us to go directly to the person who has wronged us. If reconcilia-tion does not occur, we are to go to another for assistance in addressing this matter. It is much easier to tell others first, when we are wronged. Yet, in so doing we show a lack of trust in our relationships with those in the community. Is there a person we need to speak to one-to-one for healing and unity?
