PROTEUS HR - THE PRINCIPLE OF RAINSCREEN fS)Proteus.HR

HONEYCOMB METAL RAINSCREEN

Rainscreen cladding is the attachment of an outer skin of rear-ventilated cladding to a new or existing building. The system is a form of double-wall construction that uses an outer layer to keep out the rain and an inner layer to provide thermal insulation, prevent excessive air leakage and carry wind loading. The outer layer breathes like a skin while the inner layer reduces energy losses. The structural frame of the building is kept absolutely dry, as water never reaches it or the thermal insulation. Evaporation and drainage in the cavity removes water that penetrates between panel joints. Water droplets are not driven through the panel joints or openings because the Rainscreen principle means that wind pressure acting on the outer face of the panel is equalized in the cavity. Therefore, there is no significant pressure differential to drive the rain through joints. During extreme weather, a minimal amount of water may penetrate the outer cladding. This, however, will run as droplets down the back of the panels and be dissipated through evaporation and drainage.

PROTEUS HR - HONEYCOMB TECHNOLOGY

Honeycomb structures have the geometry of a honeycomb to allow the minimization of the amount of material used to reach minimal weight and minimal material cost.

A Honeycomb shaped structure provides a material with minimal density and relative high out-of-plane compression properties and out-of-plane shear properties.

Honeycomb core is a low strength material, but bonded to two outer skins it provides the sandwich composite with high bending stiffness with overall low density. The thicker the core material, the stronger the composite, this principle works in much the same way as an l-Beam does.

CWCT Test

The Proteus HR System has been tested in accordance with CWCT Standard Test Methods for walls with Ventilated Rainscreens and covered:

Water tightness using dynamic pressure - PASSED • Wind resistance - Safety and Serviceability - PASSED

Water tightness - Dynamic

Procedure - Water was sprayed onto the sample at a f low rate of at least 3.4 l i tres/m 2 /minute. The sample was subjected to wind from an Aero Engine of a velocity that would produce average deflections in the principle framing members equal to those produced by a static pressure differential of 600 pascals. The conditions were maintained for 15 minutes.

Results - To pass the test there shall be no water penetration on to the face of the backing wall, water drainage down the rear of the panel is permitted. At completion of the test there must be no standing water in locations intended to remain dry. The small amount of water that entered they system drained down the vertical mullions and the rear of the panel. All water drained out of the system.

Wind resistance - Serviceability

Procedure - Five positive pressure pulses were applied at 2400 pascals (2.4kn).

Results - The calculated permissible deflection shall be no greater than L/90. The measured deflection did not exceed the L/90 limit. The residual deformation of the panel was less than 1mm. No damage to the system was observed.

Wind resistance-Safety

Procedure - One positive pressure pulse was applied at 3600 pascals (3.6kn).

Results - The purpose of the safety test is to demonstrate the system has an adequate reserve of strength. The system remained fully intact and no damage was observed.

Cyclic Wind Loading Test

The Proteus HR System has been tested in accordance with BRE Digest 346, Part 7, wind speeds for serviceability and fatigue assessment. This is not a mandatory test, it was undertaken to demonstrate the durability and performance of the system over a 50 year life cycle.

The panel system was cycled through 6450 pressure loads ranging from 960 pascals to 2400 pascals. On completion of the test the system was dismantled, all panels and components were inspected for any deformation or damage none was found.

The panels were sent to the laboratory and climbing drum peel test were completed, the test results compared to controlled samples showed nominal change in bond strength.

The Proteus SC system is a single skin panel system which can be provided in all metal finishes both Solid, Perforated & Mesh. The panel system uses the same aluminium support system as the Proteus HR system.

The Proteus CX system is a honeycomb panel system that utilises the Proteus aluminium support and fixing system. The face of the panel has 3.5mm thick ceramic layer giving the panel the appearance of large format stone/ceramic panels.
