FABRIZIO CORNELI "Creator of shadows" Fabrizio Corneli is an artist from Italy who creates shadowy outlines mixed with vibrant colors. He does so by shaping custom lamps to project specific images at the proper angles. When the lights are turned off, the Florence- based artist's work seems like a collection of abstract sculptural figures. They're nothing to necessarily fawn over and gape at in awe. However, it's when the light is on that his eye-catching shadows stain the adjacent walls and leave viewers absolutely flabbergasted by the detailed and artistic images that are projected. BIOGRAPHY

• Corneli was born in Florence in 1958 and lives and works in Florence and in Umbria. After his graduation from "Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze" in 1980, he studied Semiotics at "Instituto DAMS", where he began exploring his curiosity towards Shadow & Light and their borderlines.

• From the very beginning of his artistic career, extending the essential meaning of "Confine" (border) between recognizing and unrecognizing, abstraction and concreteness, simplicity and complication, fullness and emptiness, and so fourth has been the pivotal platform on which to develop his unique repetoire of expressions.

• His curiosity towards the theme has gained an accelerating momentum in his original way for over the past 25 years. When a spectator faces his artworks, he/she would initially be attracted to its aesthetic composition of Light & Shadow and becomes puzzled by the way he deploys them even when the spectator approaches to the wall.

• Having had his works included in the GORI Collection in 1987 and again in 1997, the foundation of his aesthetic impulse centres the field of tension for the attainment of consciousness in the whole range of hypotheses between error and knowledge, “under tension”. This leads to a realisation that seeing, trying, experimenting, recognizing an

• The first large-scale solar installation "Augenblick" was realised in Köln, Germany when he lived and worked there (1993-1998).

• His career in Japan became more progressive soon after his first visit to the country for an exhibition at Mssohkan, capturing both media and corporate interests.

WORK"Dreaming woman with animals",

Installation at Museum of Art Seoul National University 2010

• The shadow art of Italian artist Fabrication Corneli is the result of carefully calculated projections of light. Using mathematics to produce each visually compelling and mind-boggling piece of work, Corneli gives life to his seemingly simple, geometric wall extensions with light. He poignantly says, "Light is energy which creates forms.”

• In his installation in Seoul the artist designs 5 faces. The central one, is the main one, and represents a dreaming woman. Her dream, that is connected to wild animals, has a lot to do with the ideography of the artist. The two pairs of animals on her both sides are chosen very carefully for their meaning. For example the fox is the predator of the rabbit, so their relation to eachother is similar to the one between the light and its shadow.

WORK"Grande volante VIII" Installation at LUMINA Light festival, Portugal

• The artist creates installations in which the light source is no longer an external presence or its own metaphor, it is rather a physical entity inside the work, tangible but immaterial, whose forms are shaped as sculptures but projected onto a wall like two-dimensional images.

• In his work Corneli uses just a few simple stick-like structures on a wall allowing shadows to create the defining contours of faces and body parts, they each utilize the power of light and shadow to form unforeseeable figures.

WORK"Duetto" Installation on Sannomaya Tower in Kobe, Japan 2007

"Augenblick" Germany 1997

• In all of his outdoor installations the artist uses the natural sunlight to produce images of casted shadow on vertical walls.

• The installation" Duetto" by Fabrizio Corneli is situated on Sannomya Tower in Kobe, Japan. The image is only visible during a certain time window of a day, when the sun is shining. Objects poke out from the side of the building, casting shadows which create the image of kissing lovers. This project introduces the idea of time showing the complete image just for one moment.

WORK“Iperboreo I”, 1995/’96 and “Altro”, 2010

• When the lights are turned off, the Florence-based artist's work seems like a collection of abstract sculptural figures. They're nothing to necessarily fawn over and gape at in awe. However, it's when the light is on that his eye-catching shadows stain the adjacent walls and leave viewers absolutely flabbergasted by the detailed and artistic images that are projected.

• In the work Iperboreo I, which dates back to 1995/96, a wall-mounted object performs two functions: it is a sculptural element and constituent of the installation, and, at the same time, a light diffuser. A human figure made of light takes shape from it on the wall, as by magic: It ’s a full figure, in profile, gently holding the object in his hands, as if it were a precious relic of mysterious origin. An image made of pure energy, impalpable, something we can see and recognize, free to imagine a story, the event portraying a gesture that, though simple, has an emblematic and explosive visual strength.

POSSIBLE APPLICATIONEXTERIOR- Façade

• Moving Homeostatic Facade Preventing Solar Heat Gain.

• This prototype system, Homeostatic Facade, is the latest in green building design. The line maze like facade consists of material that flexes and bends as an artificial muscle fighting solar heat gain by changing shape on its own. No computer programing or physical adjustments required. The system regulates a buildings climate by auto responding to environmental conditions and has an advantage over other systems because of its low power consumption and localized control.

POSSIBLE APPLICATIONINTERIOR- 3d wall

• Delta Light uses Topic lights to create 3D effects on a simple wall. Lighting design that creates stunning effects for residential and commercial interior and display lighting.

• The use of shadow in interior helps for orientation and easy communication with the visitor. It also allows to create stunning effects and impression. As Louis Kahn mentioned in his book Light Matters: “ Each space must be defined by its structure and the character of its natural light". It is a matter of contrast between light and shadow.
