Walter A. StephanChief Executive Officer of FACC AG

A strong FACC through common values

accepting responsibility, recognising performance and success, making de-cisions quickly and on your own initiati-ve. What unites us is our commitment to actively and passionately seek the best solutions and be a reliable partner for our customers.

It’s chocks away for the aviation indust-ry. Nevertheless we must not ignore the changes in our environment. The politi-cal and economic framework conditions are not getting any easier, which in the end will also affect air travel, including our customers and “our” FACC.

We are taking on a lot, but above all we are taking on responsibility. With com-mon values and common goals in mind we will continue to successfully over-come challenges in the future.

Yours,

Dear Readers,

In the latest edition of “take off” we want to surprise you with an innovation of a slightly different kind. It reflects our company’s dy-namic course very clearly: the new corporate identity of FACC AG.

Over the years FACC has established itself as a preferred partner in the avia-tion industry. The new corporate identi-ty builds on proven material, developed and given a modern twist adapted to the partnership-based, solution-oriented management of the company. The de-sign process included an intense exami-nation of our competences, values and goals, and resulted in a bold directive: “Extend Your Expectations”. This directi-ve is intended to confidently proclaim to the public that we fulfil the high expec-tations of our customers and often even exceed them. But we also want to im-plement specific HR measures to meet the expectations of our employees and create for them an ideal environment for their day-to-day work and their career paths at FACC.

This attitude of expectation is also ap-plied to our own self-image, our corpo-rate culture. The strong growth – and here I would like to point out the plea-sing 31% increase in turnover in the last financial year – has led to a large incre-ase in employees, both nationally and internationally. Over 2000 employees from 35 nations work at the various lo-cations in Austria and abroad. Together in a strong team they have achieved numerous successes, from production start-up of the various projects on the aircraft programs of Boeing 787 and Airbus A380, and record figures in de-velopment performance, to first delivery of important components for the A350 XWB. Now there are new major orders from our global customers to be dealt with. Global action across borders and cultures is required. Particularly in such an international environment, I consider it all the more important that every em-ployee speaks the FACC language. The motto “Extend Your Expectations” is in-tended to be a powerful and permanent reminder to each and every employee at FACC of their obligation to fulfil the ex-pectations placed upon them. Working in the aviation industry means always

Consider everything. Implement the best.

Only the sky is the limit.

Take off: How is FACC organized in

order to provide enhanced customer

benefit?

Machtlinger: We pool our core com-

petences in three divisions. FACC Ae-

rostructures develops and produces

various different components for pri-

mary and secondary aircraft structures.

FACC Engines & Nacelles is the efficient

partner for composite component so-

lutions for aircraft engine environments.

And FACC Interiors specializes in cabin

interior solutions.

In addition, FACC has increasingly po-

sitioned itself as a partner for turnkey

solutions. By offering ready-to-install

component assemblies and systems in

each of its divisions, FACC generates

added value for its customers.

Take off: So „Extend Your Expecta-

tions“ is something customers can

bank on?

Machtlinger: Yes, that is also one of

our central messages within the scope

off magazine constitutes the foundati-

on?

Machtlinger: Exactly. In a nutshell,

our main directions of thrust are: The

continued extension of our portfolio

of products and services, as we, as a

provider of integrated solutions for the

aeronautics industry, strive to fulfil the

expectations of our customers. In addi-

tion, we aim to expand our global pre-

sence and achieve profitable growth.

„Extend Your Expecta-tions.“

Wherever people board a plane these days, they are more than likely to be surrounded by FACC components. No other aeronau-tical supplier has its lightweight components installed in so many different aircraft models. Fo-cusing on providing maximum benefit to its customers, FACC continues on its successful flight path. Its clearly defined strategy constitutes the foundation, while its new corporate identity serves as a distinctive hallmark of its

dynamic drive. We spoke with Robert Machtlinger, COO at FACC.

„Preferred partner.“Take off: FACC is ready to take off for

the future. What is the objective?

Machtlinger: As a Tier-1 supplier, we

strive to be the preferred partner for

manufacturers of aircraft and aircraft

engines around the globe as well as for

their suppliers.

Take off: And the defined strategy al-

ready featured in issue 28 of our Take

of our new corporate identity.

Take off: ... which certainly includes

more than that?

Machtlinger: Of course. Hand in hand

with the corporate strategy, we elabo-

rated a comprehensive communication

concept that covers all parameters –

from positioning, logo, visuals, claim,

to brochures, presentation documents,

and to our new website. But why don‘t

you visit www.facc.com and see for

yourself.

Take off: Another thing that‘s new is

FACC‘s claim: „Pilot. Passion. Partner-

ship.“

Machtlinger:It is also our central pro-

mise to customers and expresses what

FACC stands for:

In its role as a Pilot, FACC pinpoints the

best solution. Passion is the emotion

that drives us forward. FACC‘s em-

ployees incessantly grow and develop

themselves and FACC‘s solutions. And

in a Partnership on equal footing, we

work as reliable team players.

„We only remember what surprises us“Take off: The implementation features a

highly unique imagery?

Machtlinger: „Nature is our model.

Consider everything, implement the

best, only the sky is the limit“. This is

how one could describe lightweight

construction for aeronautical enginee-

ring in general terms. Inspired by this

vision, our imagery, including surprising

associations between elements, implies

that we at FACC have the right solution

for every challenge, however uncom-

mon it may be. The four key visuals

symbolizing the group and its three

divisions serve as eyecatchers on our

brochures and our website.

„Soar with us to new heights.“Take off: FACC‘s staff members are

also a key part of its communications?

Machtlinger: Absolutely. After all, our

business success depends on them.

Mottoed „Soar with us to new heights“,

a special concept bundles FACC‘s nu-

merous activities in this field. It provides

information and assistance to new em-

ployees and defines the values that we

as a team act on.

After all, we at FACC believe that thin-

king and acting according to common

values and toward common objectives

is the best way to achieve success.

A consistent corporate identity, as an

expression of the corporate culture that

we share, serves as an important rein-

forcing element, giving FACC a distincti-

ve image within the industry.

New order:Automated Laying: With this order, FACC is also taking another step for-ward in production technology and is introducing automated laying in com-ponent production. With advanced tape laying the individual composite layers for the flap components are layered flat and automatically. The parts are then formed over a warmed “stamp” into the relevant geomet-ry, e.g. u-shape. This hot forming process saves the tedious manual draping of layers and precision and efficiency are further increased.

SpoilerDelivery of the spoilers is in the final stages of start-up. As a Tier-1 supplier, FACC has provided support for the develop-ment and ensured industrialisation from construction of the tools to manufacture of the spoilers. “The collaboration with Airbus in the course of the development, qualification and production start-up was as expected very good”, concluded Andreas Furthmayr, Vice President Division Aerostructures.

Constructive collaboration: In terms of development, FACC was able to contribute its expertise in the field of Airbus long-haul aircraft, especially as the company was also responsible for the spoilers for the A330 und A340. Originally the same construction principle was intended. In cooperation with Airbus it was possible to reduce the complexity of the RTM (= Resin Transfer Moulding) component in line with the special requirements. A combination of integrated composite and alu-minium fittings proved the most efficient solution.

Qualified cooperation: Another challenge was certification. The official requirements for approval of long-haul aircraft and their components become more stringent with each aircraft generation. FACC satisfied the complex certification process according to the latest requirements without massive impact on the schedule.

FACC – European Support Partner: In the global world of aircraft manufac-turers and of FACC’s customers, sales market oriented thinking is essential. FACC is to manufacture sets for 150 aircraft in its plant in Austria. As Euro-pean Support Partner of Airbus, FACC will parallel to the manufacture in Austria accompany the industrialization and the production ramp-up of the spoilers at an Asian Airbus supplier and thus support Airbus in the fulfillment of its offset obli-gations in this important growth region. Airbus thereby gets the guarantee of an uninterrupted manufacturing process as well as of a fully industrialised product in line with the high FACC standards.

WingletsWith this life-of-program contract, FACC is demonstrating its competence as a Tier-1 supplier for the next generation of Airbus long-haul aircraft. Under the con-tract, FACC is responsible for the deve-lopment, qualification including testing, the design and manufacture of the pro-duction tools as well as production and assembly of the individual components to create a system ready-to-install.

With its A350 XWB Airbus places a modern next generation long-range aircraft on the market. And

on board are FACC components from all three divisions. FACC Engines & Nacelles is supplying

weight-optimised translating sleeves and engine components; FACC Interiors provides passenger

door lining, smoke detection covers and overhead stowage compartments. And the spoilers and

winglets are provided by FACC Aerostructures. Here it is: green light for production

For one A350 XWB FACC supplies 16 different spoiler components - 14 spoilers, 2 droop panels

Winglet elements: FACC supplies each component to another Airbus plant.

Full scale tests challenge: The constant expansion of the perfor-mance portfolio is part of FACC cor-porate strategy. So for the first time on parts of this size – the largest compo-nent measures six metres - full scale tests are being carried out at FACC. This involves subjecting the complete winglet system to static and dynamic testing for resilience, fatigue and endu-rance, up to mechanical failure.

Airbus A321 Outer Flaps

Weight reduction challenge: Lightness is the top priority. The FACC enginee-ring specialists in cooperation with the Airbus team managed to reduce the weight significantly over the course of the development process, thus making a major contribution towards increasing efficiency and saving on fuel for the aircraft.

The coordination challenge: At peak times over 100 engineering experts were working on the project at several locations across Europe. In addi-tion to the FACC engineering centres in Austria and Bratislava, an FACC deve-lopment team was also deployed on site at Airbus in Filton/UK. FACC proved im-pressively that the efficient completion of even extensive work projects spanning numerous locations and companies is well within its capabilities. The Europe-wide dimension of the pro-ject is also demonstrated by the delivery logistics. The butt strips go to Brough-ton/UK. The wings will then be further processed in Germany’s Bremen plant; here the wingtips will join them before the winglets are mounted in Toulouse in France. For FACC as a seasoned delive-ry partner of Airbus, this is no problem.

Building on the long years of suc-cessful cooperation on various Airbus programmes, FACC was selected by Airbus to provide the outer flaps for the A321 and took over the project from the German Airbus works in

Stade (Composite parts) and Bremen (Assembly). Higher production rates due to increased demand for this type of aircraft and the associated capacity considerations at Airbus (make or buy analysis) were the triggers for the trans-fer. This order is of particular significance for FACC and enables the composite specialist to apply its long years of ex-perience to the design, development and production of wing components for the models of the Airbus A320 family. The contract provides for deliveries over a period of several years.

New Quality and Environmental Certifications at FACC

Rolls-Royce: Supply Chain Executives visit FACC

In the recent past, FACC successfully prepared, executed, and completed two certifications. The quality certification guarantees documented safety to customers; the environmental certification

constitutes another of FACC‘s contributions toward „clean skies“.

Both certification procedures were car-ried out in cooperation with Quality Austria. Auditors Manfred Leser, Gerald Perschler and Martin Nussbaumer sup-ported FACC‘s staff with their expertise and thus contributed substantially to their successful completion.

Quality management to EN9100:2008. FACC has now successfully realigned its quality management according to this standard. The aviation-specific indus-try standard based on EN9100:2008 may in fact be the strictest of all market sectors worldwide. It forms an integral part of any contract with customers, and compliance with it is mandatory for FACC. This documented safety cons-titutes one of the key factors that help ensure long-term customer satisfaction and is consistent with FACC‘s funda-

mental quality principle: „Deliver Value To The Customer – On Time, Cost And Quality“. After all, at FACC, quality forms the basis for lasting success in the aero-nautics industry.

Environmental manage-ment system to ISO 14.001 In order to clearly document FACC‘s and its staff‘s expertise and sense of respon-sibility regarding environmental protec-tion also to the general public, FACC im-plemented, for the first time in company history, an environmental management system to the ISO 14.001 standard. In accordance with its motto „A Clean Way To The Sky“, FACC hereby de-monstrates that its lightweight products are made according to environmentally compatible and safe manufacturing me-thods and help ensure that, despite a marked increase in air traffic, aviation-

complex modules and primary structures which would be very well suited to application in engines of the next genera-tion. The key technologies here are moving towards a higher degree of composites in aero engines which should further improve the safety, weight, efficiency and performance level of the engines.

To round off their visit the delegation visited the individual plants and were impressed by the advanced fibre-reinforced technology and the extensive development and manufactur-ing competences of FACC.

Representatives from COMAC, SAMC and FACC at the signing ceremony of the C919 spoiler and winglet contract.

Extend Your Expectations

Take off: The winglets and spoilers contract for the C919 is not your first joint project with COMAC?Brunner: That‘s right! Before becoming director of Aerostructures programs, I was business development manager at FACC Interiors for almost two and a half years. In this function, I accompanied a large-scale project in cooperation with our Chinese customer.

Take off: What were your impressions regarding the cooperation, but also with respect to differences in languages and cultures?Brunner: There are definitely diffe-rences, but we have long learned to deal with them. In the course of the project management, we had an inten-sive exchange with the engineers from

COMAC, both at FACC in Austria as well as on-site. Building on this long-standing cooperation, we are far ahead in terms of experience.

Take off: Experience and expertise which might also be of interest to other aircraft manufacturers?Brunner: Absolutely! From Engines & Nacelles to Interiors and Aerostructures: we, like no other aeronautical supplier, combine aircraft and production exper-tise with China-specific competency. This way, we are able to reliably assist Western aircraft manufacturers with offset obligations in this growth market.

Take off: How often do you personally visit COMAC in Shanghai?Brunner: Every two to three months.

Take off: And what are your personal impressions of this metropolis?Brunner: Its dynamism is absolutely fascinating. You can feel the passion of wanting to move forward. Despite its size, Shanghai to me is an extremely friendly city with a very homely atmos-phere. It makes you feel at home and very safe.

An interview with Roland

Brunner

Whether in business, space travel, or sports: the Middle

Kingdom is on its way to the top. Accordingly, in the next

twenty years, China will also be needing more than 4,000

passenger aircraft to meet its aviation demand. The COMAC

C919 is already the second passenger aircraft to be

developed and built entirely in China. And it is already the

second time that FACC is on board.

This classically dimensioned (length ap-prox. 38 m, wingspan approx. 35 m) twin-engine medium-haul aircraft will seat from 156 to 190 passengers, de-pending on the respective configuration. FACC has maintained a long-standing cooperation with the manufacturer of the C919. After all, FACC also de- veloped and industrialized the interior for the ARJ21 the first-ever Chinese pas-senger aircraft.

FACC winglets und spoilers. FACC was also chosen as the partner for the development of fuel-saving winglets and composite spoilers on the wings. The scope of this contract includes the

entire development of the components, the development and construction of all manufacturing tools, and the entire in-dustrialization, plus the production and delivery of the first shipset. In addition, there exists an option for a life-of-pro-gram production contract.

Project progressing rapidly In spring 2010, FACC received COMAC‘s inquiry. Based on a memorandum of un-derstanding, the co-location phase was kicked off in July 2011. Since then, spe-cialists from FACC have been on site in Shanghai on a continuous basis. June 20, 2012, marked the official signing of the contract. Currently, the project is in its so-called joint definition phase during which the interfaces to the partly global manufac-turers and producers of adjacent com-ponents (wing structure, hydraulics, ac-tuators, etc.) are fine-tuned. The delivery of the first components has been sche-duled for early 2013.

By securing another order from China‘s

FACC winglets and spoilers for COMAC C919

In 2010, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) pre-sented a first prototype model at the aeronautics expo in Zhuhai. The C in the type designation stands for China, while also implying equal standing with major aircraft manu-facturers Airbus and Boeing („A B C“). The first ‚9‘ suggests ‚eternity‘ in Chinese culture, while 19(0) refers to the proposed maximum number of passengers.

integrity of our suppliers to provide not only 100% quality but also an ‘on-time’ delivery service. It is equally important that we recognise and salute our ma-nufacturing partners; because without their diligent, meticulous and conscien-tious commitment to supply the finest products and materials we would not be able to develop design and manu-facture our composite components and systems for civil aircraft. These annual awards provide us with an opportuni-ty to convey our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to such businesses, who are absolutely supportive in our underta-kings for excellence in this ever deman-ding industry.”

Contribution to „Total Cus-tomer Satisfaction“. With the annual “Excellent Supplier Awards”, FACC publicly recognises and rewards optimum suppliers within its own supply chain. The company iden-tifies those who are totally dependab-le, trustworthy and contribute greatly towards it’s ultimate goal of Total Cus-tomer Satisfaction. By achieving and maintaining exceptional performances, these particular suppliers are essential for ensuring the future success of them-selves and FACC.

A company relies on its suppliers to ensure quality, competitive-ness and customer satisfaction; therefore making a significant contribution to the company’s business success. FACC AG has honoured three of their suppliers for exceptional commitment and exemplary performance with an “Excellent Supplier Award 2011” in Gold, Silver and Bron-ze. In addition, an organisation has also been chosen to receive a “Special Performance Award” in recognition of their services and total support.

of all the seaplanes are the highlight of the event. This year’s star guest is coming especially from the USA and is called Sikorsky S-38. This amphibian plane built in 1928 achieved world renown as the “Flying Zebra” in the Hollywood film Avia-tor. With around 40 planes – from the bright yellow UC-1 Twin Bee and the 60-year-old Dornier Do-24 ATT to the legendary Consolidated PBY Catalina – every propeller-powered machi-ne is up there. For two full days the air above Lake Wolfgang will vibrate – until the seaplane pilots head for home and the customary peace of the lakeside skies is restored.

It may seem surprising at first that an idyllic mountainous re-gion of all places should play host to a meeting of pilots and aircraft which one would rather expect to see in a coastal location or on the open sea. At Lake Wolfgang in Austria, better known for its fairytale mountain backdrop of the Salz-kammergut, seaplanes from all over the world are coming together for the seventh time this year for the scalaria air challenge. But in fact this isn’t something entirely new here: aircraft have been landing on Lake Wolfgang since 1924. The company Österreichische Luftverkehrs AG, a prede-cessor of Austrian Airlines, first flew regular flights between Vienna and St Wolfgang with a Junkers F-13 W on floats. This was an extremely expensive undertaking at the time and really only for the very rich.

Lively lake activity. But the scalaria air challenge is neither a proper air show nor a flying day, it is a flying & lifestyle event which impresses its visitors with a breathtaking combination of art, music, flying and gastronomy, together with a mix of society and seaplanes. Sightseeing flights for guests, lifestyle on the beach, open-air cinema, concerts and many other highlights – the 20,000 plus spectators all around the lake have the chance to experience a very special festival. For one weekend in July, the sky over Austria’s Lake Wolfgang will become the backdrop for

historic aircraft to show off their breathtaking stunts: within an incredibly short time the sca-laria air challenge has developed from an insi-der tip to an established event in the European

aviation calendar.

At FACC, the technologies of

tomorrow are developed in interdisciplinary

teamwork.

FACC builds Technology Center

FACC to conduct uniquely realistic ana-lyses and tests.

Modularity and identity„The modern architecture also epitomi-zes the company‘s identity. The buildings were designed to reflect FACC‘s strong innovative drive and efficiently support our staff in thinking up new ideas“, says Robert Machtlinger, COO at FACC. A high level of flexibility and modular room partitioning concepts were what we fo-cused on in planning. The open design and short distances between various units will benefit communication and interdepartmental cooperation. Elabora-ted by experts together with FACC staff members, the state-of-the-art office and workplace concept creates an ideal work environment.

With its new technology center that is being built at St. Martin/Innkreis, Upper Austria, FACC secures its growth strategy for the long term. „The new tech-nology center will be the hub of our global R&D activities“, ex-plains Walter A. Stephan, CEO at FACC AG. In this way, the R&D Department as well as the development departments of our Aerostructures, Engines & Na-celles, and Interiors divisions will be combined and closely inter-linked with FACC‘s engineering branches in Vienna, Bratislava, and Shanghai.

500 future-oriented jobs:On the occasion of the groundbreaking ceremony, Viktor Sigl, Minister of Eco-nomic Affairs for the province of Upper Austria, emphasized that FACC‘s invest-ment generates strong impulses for Up-per Austria as a business and research location. The Technology Center, as well as an adjoining cutting-edge Enginee-ring Test Center, will be built on a 50,500 m2 plot of land that borders on the exis-ting sites Plant 2 and Plant 3. The two buildings, with construction costs bud-geted at € 22 million, are part of FACC‘s investment program for R&D with total funds of € 54 million. These facilities will be used to explore new materials, me-thods, and technologies and develop new components and manufacturing processes. The Test Center will allow
