Facial balance, and great smile esthetics are sought with the ideal occlusion probably playing a declining role in patients’ treatment objectives although a functional occlusion should always be among the goals. The time factor (maturation) as it may affect the esthetics of an adolescent treated today, should also be taken into account. Progressive atrophy of the dermis, and loss of muscle mass and compact- ness occurring during aging that may also contribute to bone loss could possibly be slowed by changing the lower facial height. Ideal soft-tissue proportions must define ideal hard-tissue relationships and not the other way around. Therefore, ideal treatment planning should focus on soft tissue relationships, and placement of teeth and jaws as needed to achieve them. Smile enhancement should also be included among treatment goals, and a comprehensive analysis of it -in all planes of space- is rather critical. Finally, esthetics of the gingiva and teeth are of utmost importance to complete the picture. The aim of this presentation is to present the scientific background related to all the above as well as to demonstrate -through plenty of clinical examples- the far-reaching effects that planned changes of the vertical, the transverse, and the anteroposterior dimensions may have on the esthetics of the face. Dr. Dimitrios MavreasDoctor Dimitrios Mavreas is currently a Clinical Professor at Vrije University in Brussels, Belgium, and maintains a private practice in Athens, Greece. He is also affiliated to the Hellenic Craniofacial Center, Athens, Greece, treating craniofa-cial anomaly and cleft patients.

He completed his orthodontic training at the Department of Orthodontics, Aarhus, Royal Dental College, Denmark, (Master of Science Degree), and also had postgraduate training in Occlusion and TMJ Management at the Department of Occlusion, Georgetown University School of Dentistry, Washington DC, USA. In addition he holds a PhD degree from the University of Athens, School of Dentistry, Greece.

He has worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Orthodontics in Aarhus, Denmark.

He has published numerous articles in various orthodontic journals. He has been lecturing extensively on the Damon system and various other topics.
