The Hawaiian Monk Seal is an endangered species of earless seal that lives around the Hawaiian Islands. Currently, there are about 1,100 seals in the wild. The population is threatened by fishing nets, marine debris, disease, and low levels of genetic variation. A female can only produce one pup per year, causing the population to grow slowly, and only 20 percent of pups survive into adulthood.
Hawaiian monk seals spend the majority of their lives in the sea, but do come to shore to give birth and to find shelter in large storms. They feed on the coral reefs and sandy bottoms of the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaiian monk seals eat fish and invertebrates, and are preyed on by sharks.
