Why is Social Media Important?

• We can have real-time marketing of our programming or exchange of ideas.

• We can generate new interest in our work in a very short amount of time.

• Video allows families to learn/get reminders/see events on their own terms.

ISUEO Social Media Responsibility• When using social media platforms in the name of ISU Extension and

Outreach, you should identify yourself as an employee or volunteer. Misleading the public is a major faux pas in social media interaction.

• Be sincere and transparent. Fostering trust and strength in our organization is important.

• Through all social media communications, employees and volunteers are expected to continuously uphold the core values and mission of ISU Extension and Outreach. The ISU Extension and Outreach social media voice should always be excited and enthusiastic, helpful and friendly, personal and engaging, and professional and reliable.

A word about demographics

Which Live Video is Best?• I heard about Facebook Live while watching a Scope (video on Periscope)

• Much depends on how you want to use it.

• Currently Facebook live allows individuals and pages to have live feed – but it hasn’t reached groups.

• Do you have a bigger audience with Facebook or Twitter?

• Are you growing your audience or reaching current audience in a different way?

• Which are you and your participants more comfortable with?

• If you feel comfortable with Facebook – go Live

• If your have more followers on Twitter – go Periscope

Get Ready

• What are the main points you want to cover?

• Titles of your presentation matter – Use Emojis

• Promote your broadcast ahead of time

• Use WIFI when possible to avoid using personal data!

• Toggle camera- between you and facing away. Remember there is a sound delay when you do this.

• Check direction of camera- comments shift depending on direction of camera

Get Set• Before starting your broadcast- make sure your phone is in airplane mode and

your wifi is on. (By putting on airplane mode, you won’t get a call during your live video.)

• Decide if you want to enable or disable your location. (I would disable if at home, enable if at library for an event.)

• Make sure your phone is FULLY charged.

• Decide if your video event is closed (an option on Periscope) or not

• Make sure anyone you plan to interview has a photo release completed.

Those Pesky Trolls

• Don’t feed them.

• Try humoring them or praising them

• Block them

• Unfriend them, report to site administrator

• Remember, you are in charge

of what happens in your sandbox.

Success: Linn County used Facebook Live to remind families about May 15 deadline. 603 people were reached with 234 views. CYC kept message short and sweet. Video made the post more interesting.

• Whew! You made it!

• Review comments that participants made. Make sure to follow up if you committed to doing things during your video. (Sending links to people, etc.)

• Remind participants who couldn’t attend to view it.

• Celebrate your accomplishment!
