Facing Future Challenges 2010 Annual Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends: We are happy to report that, despite continued Medicaid cuts, prudent spending and tight fiscal program management resulted in a surplus for fiscal year 2010. This surplus has allowed us to plan for several much-needed capital projects to be scheduled in 2011. The present Saint Antoine Residence, now opened 17 years, is in need of several cosmetic updates and repairs, including re-wallpapering, roofing, and sidewalk and parking lot re-pavement. Saint Antoine will face continued reimbursement challenges in the upcoming year secondary to the State of Rhode Island’s fiscal crisis. New changes are on the way as the State Department of Human Services plans to “roll out” plans for a new acuity-based reimbursement system. The system as outlined presents concerns for inadequate reimbursement for several categories of care including Alzheimer and dementia care. Aside from Medicaid reimbursement, Saint Antoine faces other challenges brought about by a dramatically-changing senior landscape. People are staying healthier and living longer. Life expectancy at the turn of the 20 th century was approximately 46 years; today it is 76 years. In Rhode Island, 15% of the population is over 65 years of age, by 2030 that number will soar to more than 50%. For the first time in history, senior citizens will outnumber every other age bracket. While seniors want to stay in their homes longer, they often do not have families to help care for them in close proximity as they did decades ago. Healthcare, insurance and treatment choices are more complicated than ever. Seniors are often left to cope with challenging health and other life situations on their own - creating a real gap in quality of care. As the generation of baby boomers age, demands for elder care will continue to grow. And while the demand for senior services is growing, payers (private, government, and insurance) are adamant about reducing costs. Therefore, the future in senior health care demands that seniors receive more care at home – and in the community. And, healthcare professionals will have to be better trained to face these new challenges. This is why during the 2010 year, Saint Antoine’s management and Advisory Board, working in conjunction with David Roush and Associates, engaged in a critical self evaluation, and developed a strategic plan designed to provide Saint Antoine with a road map for its future. The 2011 year will be one in which we will implement some of our findings. Saint Antoine is exploring a range of programming to include home health care, transportation, trainings for eldercare professionals, a coordination of healthcare program, and expanded short term rehabilitation and transitional care --- services that will focus on the total wellness of the seniors we deem to serve. Facing Future Challenges

2010 Annual Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends:

We are happy to report that, despite continued Medicaid

cuts, prudent spending and tight fiscal program management

resulted in a surplus for fiscal year 2010. This surplus

has allowed us to plan for several much-needed capital

projects to be scheduled in 2011. The present Saint Antoine

Residence, now opened 17 years, is in need of several

cosmetic updates and repairs, including re-wallpapering,

roofing, and sidewalk and parking lot re-pavement.

Saint Antoine will face continued reimbursement challenges in the upcoming year

secondary to the State of Rhode Island’s fiscal crisis. New changes are on the way

as the State Department of Human Services plans to “roll out” plans for a new

acuity-based reimbursement system. The system as outlined presents concerns for

inadequate reimbursement for several categories of care including Alzheimer and

dementia care.

Aside from Medicaid reimbursement, Saint Antoine faces other challenges brought about

by a dramatically-changing senior landscape. People are staying healthier and living

longer. Life expectancy at the turn of the 20th century was approximately 46 years; today

it is 76 years. In Rhode Island, 15% of the population is over 65 years of age, by 2030

that number will soar to more than 50%. For the first time in history, senior citizens will

outnumber every other age bracket.

While seniors want to stay in their homes longer, they often do not have families to help

care for them in close proximity as they did decades ago. Healthcare, insurance and

treatment choices are more complicated than ever. Seniors are often left to cope with

challenging health and other life situations on their own - creating a real gap in quality

of care. As the generation of baby boomers age, demands for elder care will continue to

grow. And while the demand for senior services is growing, payers (private, government,

and insurance) are adamant about reducing costs. Therefore, the future in senior health

care demands that seniors receive more care at home – and in the community. And,

healthcare professionals will have to be better trained to face these new challenges.

This is why during the 2010 year, Saint Antoine’s management and Advisory Board, working

in conjunction with David Roush and Associates, engaged in a critical self evaluation, and

developed a strategic plan designed to provide Saint Antoine with a road map for its

future. The 2011 year will be one in which we will implement some of our findings. Saint

Antoine is exploring a range of programming to include home health care, transportation,

trainings for eldercare professionals, a coordination of healthcare program, and expanded

short term rehabilitation and transitional care --- services that will focus on the total

wellness of the seniors we deem to serve.

Sincerely,
