FROM THE EDITOR

Few days polarise public opinion as much as Valentine’s Day. Some people buy into it wholeheartedly, making elaborate and extravagant romantic gestures to their better halves, spending a fortune on flowers, gifts and dinners.

Others reject it completely, outright refusing to acknowledge the event, and choosing instead to sit at home and watch a DVD, with a blanket ban on flowers, chocolates, or anything with a heart on it.

I find that whichever camp you fall into depends entirely on your relationship status. Singletons pretend to reject the whole affair, but secretly wish they had someone to share it with, so they make elaborate displays of indifference to hide the fact!

New couples, or couples facing relationship difficulties, tend to be the ones that go all out the most, as they’re the ones intent on proving to themselves and the world how amazing their relationship is, even though the opposite might be the truth.

More stable and strong relationships seem to take it with a pinch of salt, as they don’t need one particular day to demonstrate their love for each other – it’s a year round

thing for them! However, in any given situation, there is

one universal, undeniable, utterly infallible truth: No matter how indifferent a woman acts towards the day, no matter how much she says that flowers and gifts aren’t necessary, she will , always, ALWAYS be happy if you surprise her with flowers, gifts and dinner! Always…

So, gentlemen, resign yourselves to the fact that you will be spending money on February 14, and turn to our Valentine’s Day round-up on page 14, and console yourselves with one lucky break – The Jewellery and Watches exhibition (p.6) takes place a week AFTER Valentine’s Day!

However, a word of warning: If you do happen to forget Valentine’s Day, you will undoubtedly find yourself being dragged round aforementioned exhibition, credit card in hand, with some serious making up to do! In fact, we have a strong feeling that if a wife sees this magazine before her husband does, she might just hide it, along with any other reminders of Valentine’s Day!

After all, what’s one night of romance compared to a whole day’s shopping at a jewellery show?

We managed to secure a phone interview with James Blunt for our cover story, and thoroughly enjoyed chatting to him!Editor Tony Sidgwick disappeared off to Australia for a wedding this month, and we couldn’t help but hate him for picking up the pieces of the mess he left behind!!! We’re sponsoring a few events this month, so look out for us at the Jewellery and Watches expo, the Food Festival and the James Blunt concert!

This stunning display of the finest precious metals, stones and jewellery to be found

anywhere in the world will take place at the Doha Exhibition Centre from February 21-26. Thanks to the Middle East’s wealth in fossil fuels, it attracts the most prestigious brands and products to its shores, so you can therefore expect practically every respected jewellery boutique in the world to be represented at the event. The idea of the exhibition is to demonstrate the latest trends in the world today, whilst portraying the dynamism of Qatar as well as its strong and progressive economy, thereby encouraging foreign investors to Qatar. In keeping with Qatar’s ambitious development goals, a decision was made to organise an annual exhibition of jewellery and watches that would serve to encourage and promote specialised industries and to encourage the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) sector of the economy. An unquestionable success, the previous exhibitions attracted some of the world’s most prestigious and recognised names in the jewellery and watches design and manufacturing

Inspired by Qatar‘s tradition of jewellery design the organisers hope to establish the exhibition on the international agenda of jewellery and watch enthusiasts.Future AmbitionsThe Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition aims to distinguish itself from other exhibitions to eventually become the chosen venue for product launches in the world of jewellery and watch design and manufacturing. The aim is to establish high standards for the exhibition; to attract elegant and exclusive exhibitors and tasteful spectators; and to achieve a reputation with a wide range of international investors as a leading exhibition for jewellery and watches.

Doha 2nd Most Expensive City in Arab WorldWell, it may already be very apparent to everyone living in our lovely capital, but now it’s official: Doha is the 2nd most expensive city in the Arab world! This is according to leading US financial company USB (nothing to do with the memory sticks). This is largely attributed to a rapidly growing population and shortage of housing, and rising costs of food and fuel. And with all the development and economic growth expected, the situation will probably get worse before it gets better!

School Kids Locked UpWe were shocked and appalled to hear about the schoolchildren who were locked in a classroom for a full school day without access to food, water or even the bathroom, all because of their parents’ late payment of school fees! This is abuse, plain and simple, and in other countries the staff member responsible would be jailed. At the very least, this staff member should be sacked and never allowed to work with children again!

Qatar’s Roads Getting SaferWhile driving in Qatar isn’t considered the best in the world, it seems that recent government campaigns to improve road safety are having an impact! In a statement released by the Traffic Department, despite a high level of traffic violations, most related to speeding, the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents fell by 13.3% in 2011, when compared to 2010. The major causes of traffic accidents were listed as use of mobile phones, jumping traffic lights, not wearing seat belts and reckless driving. So be warned…

THE SCOPE

NOTEWORTHY

Right, so I Googled Valentine’s Day – one of the first things to come up was a page called

“Anti Valentine’s Day”; I bookmarked it – definitely worth a position in the ‘favourites’ option!

I wouldn’t say I am so much of a ‘let’s smash up all the flower shops and chocolate boutiques’ kind of extremist; but let’s just say the last place you will find me is gazing into my partner’s eyes, dribbling over a table covered with candles and sparkly plastic hearts telling him “Let’s just start with forever…”

I think I take after my dad; a man who claims to hate this day with a passion but will secretly send my sister

and I a bouquet every year. Yes, it is extremely sweet and I love him for it, but I am a firm believer that one day of the year should not represent just how much someone means to you; shouldn’t that be every day?

Perhaps that makes me a secret yet hopeless romantic. Perhaps an inner part of me is yearning to be whisked off on February 14th to some exotic island and be pampered head to toe and told how wonderful I am (yes, yes as I keep being told).

If I were to follow the website’s recommendations, I would have to stage an “I Hate Valentine’s Day Party”, where I would be serving up broken heart shaped cookies, playing darts on

a poster of Romeo and Juliet and even smashing the hell out of a 3D heart piñata…

So why don’t you do yourselves all a HUGE favour and NOT spend your monthly income on one day of smoochy-woochy rubbish… save it for your next holiday, a fun night out or even perhaps that diamond ring - because trust me, that will be better than all the Valentine’s Days put together!

As for me? Well the plan is to print off all the pictures of my exes and draw graffiti all over them… No, in all honesty, February 14th will be like any other normal day and no balloons, heart filled chocolates, roses or kisses are going to change that.

9FACT QATAR FEBRUARY

“There are lots of opportunities to make new friendships, either through work or where you live or socialise.”FACT caught up with Steve Baird, Senior Quantity Surveyor at David Adamson & Partners, an established firm of Chartered Surveyors helping to build Qatar’s vision for 2030.

THE DOHA MINUTE

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT LIVING IN QATAR?I don’t mind it at all. It’s really about what you make of it.

Most things are available here that I’m familiar with in the UK and there are lots of opportunities to make new friendships, either through work or where you live or socialise. Plus, there’s plenty of entertainment available: whether it’s an international tennis tournament or just a visit to the movies.

WITH THE AMOUNT OF CONSTRUCTION GOING ON HERE, HOW CAN QATAR MAINTAIN ITS IDENTITY AND STILL MOVE FORWARD AT A GREAT PACE COMMERCIALLY?

The major new developments are centred in and around Doha, but even within Doha they are trying to maintain a sense of identity, with projects such as the Cultural Village at Katara and the Souq Waqif. The landscape and skylines might change, but I think an effort is being made to retain the customs and traditions of the region.

WHAT’S THE MOST ROMANTIC ST. VALENTINE’S DAY GESTURE YOU’VE EVER MADE?

I can’t lay claim to being the most romantic of people, but I have been known to include self-penned verses into Valentine’s cards!

WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX AND SWITCH OFF FROM WORK?I play tennis and squash and I make use of the gym and pool

at my apartment block. I enjoy reading and I’ve been known to indulge in the occasional Friday Brunch. At the weekend I’ll usually catch up with the televised Premier League.

COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE: DRIVING IN QATAR IS…“Challenging! I’ll stop there as there may be people of a

sensitive nature reading this.”

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW.

Five days after graduating in the UK I went across to the States to work in a summer camp for two months. I then spent a month travelling from the East Coast to the West Coast and back. It gave me a great insight into life in America that the normal tourist wouldn’t see.

Never has a musician polarized public opinion so much, and yet enjoyed such success. Despite the fact that Blunt

has appeared on ‘Things That Britons Find Most Annoying’ polls more than once, he has still managed massive critical and commercial success.

It has become something of an amusing irony, not least to the singer, who appears ambivalent to all the fuss and gossip. The best way to describe the phenomenon would be to bring up the classic comparison to Marmite – you either love him or hate him.

Luckily for Blunt, enough people love him to make him a multi-platinum-selling artist,

and therefore very, very rich, which must make it a lot easier to tolerate his critics! Entitled Back To Bedlam, his first album, after a two-year period of practically no attention or recognition, suddenly exploded in popularity in 2005, largely thanks to the release of the album’s third single, the instantly recognisable ‘You’re Beautiful’.

The single remained at the number one spot on the UK

charts for no less than five weeks, and also achieved the top spot on charts in a total of ten countries across the world.

Because of the success of ‘You’re Beautiful’ Back to Bedlam went on to sell 10 million copies worldwide, with 2.4 million in the UK alone. It was the highest-selling album in the UK in 2005, and remains the biggest selling album of its decade in the UK. It WAS the biggest-selling album of the 21st century in the UK, until it was recently taken over by Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black.

James Blunt The multi-platinum-selling British songwriter is set to perform a live gig in Doha for the first time at the InterContinental Hotel this Valentine’s Day…

when I compare it to my days in the army it’s actually quite easy to stay grounded.F. Which is more fun, shooting guns or playing guitar?J. It depends whom you’re pointing either at!F. How about driving a tank, or playing guitar?J. Well, they’re very different things! I think that the novelty of driving a tank wears off and becomes a job, but the magic that comes from playing guitar can be found in many different ways.F. You’ve had a bit of a low profile recently; what have you been up to?J. Well, I’ve actually been on a world tour, so I’ve only had a low profile in certain places. And since January last year I’ve been to over 220 different cities, so perhaps in the UK I’ve had a bit of a lower profile, but in the rest of the world I’ve been much more visible!F. How was it hosting UK TV show Never Mind the Buzzcocks last November?J. That was fun, it was a good crowd of people, and it was a new thing for me. I’m not very comfortable in front of a camera, but I think I got away with it!F. Having toured extensively around the world, and visited many places, what would your ‘Ideal Tour’ be, now?J. Well, where I am now is one of them, which is Rio! It’s one of the most amazing cities in the world, because of its location and the people who are in it. I also love Beirut, because of a real mixture of religions and cultures, and again its location and the spirit of the audience. And Sydney would also be on it, because of the location and the sense of fun those people have! There are so many…

F. What’s the strangest thing a fan has ever said or done?J. I think most of my fans, I would hope, are pretty sane and sensible! The weirdest thing that’s happened to me has actually not been a fan, but was in fact a security guard! In Chicago during a concert he tackled me to the ground, not realising I was the singer, and wouldn’t release me while the band played on, and the other security guards had to come and pull him off me so that the concert could carry on!F. Have you played in the Middle East before?I’ve played at the Dubai Jazz Festival, and it was an amazing experience because it’s such an incredible new city, and the audience were really cool. On the same trip I also played down the road, in Oman.F. What about Qatar?I’m really looking forward to it! This is my third world tour (as in, the third world tour he has done, not his tour of the third world…) and I’ve never played there before, so it’s a real thrill to be invited to play there. I’m really looking forward to it, and to meeting a new audience, because every city has a different feel, so it’ll be a whole new thing for me.F. Any plans for 2012?You know, I’ve been on tour now for more than a year, so I’m going to go home now and catch up with my friends and family, and have a little break!F. Any new releases? No, nothing at all, I’m checking out, taking a well-deserved rest!(And that’s fair enough, we suppose!)

Blunt’s second studio album, All the Lost Souls, released in 2007, didn’t enjoy as much success as the first, but still went on to sell 4.5 million copies worldwide. Sales of his latest album, Some Kind of Trouble, which was released in 2010, currently stand at just over a million copies.

FACT caught up with James over the phone last month whilst he was in Rio for a show. Despite a decidedly dodgy line (which at one point went dead, after which the singer was nice enough to call back!), we managed to chat to him about his past experiences and his current plans.

F. There was a bit of a period between Back to Bedlam being released and its commercial success. Can you remember how it felt when things finally took off?J. Yeah, there was a fair amount of trepidation, really. I wasn’t expecting such a huge reaction, I just wanted to make an album, and if I was lucky enough that people liked it I would make a second one, and if I was lucky again I would make a third one. I was completely surprised, and there was a sense of trepidation with how big it all became!F. Despite such worldwide success, you seem to remain a very grounded chap. How do you keep your feet on the ground?J. Well, I was in the army, and you know, I think that was a very real job, which dealt with life and death. And now I’m in the most shallow industry in the world, and it has very little to do with music – it’s obsessed with money, obsessed with fame, which are two things in the world that humans have constructed that don’t really exist in any relevant form. In an industry in which people don’t really understand what the real world,

Another fantastic event featuring the Global DJs crew, this time headlined by one of the hottest house DJs on the planet, the globally-acclaimed Dutch DJ and producer Rene Amesz!

UltraChic is the weekly house music event featuring the finest tunes in Doha at

the InterContinental Hotel’s Lava Lounge every Thursday. This February, they’re pulling something special out of the hat, in the form of Dutch DJ and producer Rene Amesz.

Few people have displayed the disciplined approach to producing that Rene Amesz has in the last ten years. Churning out a steady stream of his unique and dirty sounding tracks, the Rene Amesz sound has been destroying speakers all over the world, and it looks like now it’s coming into its own at the opportune time.

Maybe Rene’s early career as a football player combined with his Rotterdam background had something to do with his work ethic. Young Rene was a promising prospect in the football world and considered a player headed for the A-team of Rotterdams finest, Feyenoord or Sparta. Unfortunately Rene had to give up because of a nasty injury, but that didn’t stop him from making some adjustments and aiming at a new career that brought

UltraChic Presents Global DJs, featuring Rene Amesz

him to where he is today.Rene’s first success as a producer

came when he started producing records for Mid-Town under various monikers. That’s what really started his hunger for his own sound, all based on ‘phat’ beats, sick grooves and a unique approach towards arrangements and sounds.

He teamed up with Peter Gelderblom who, by that time, had already made a name for himself as a club and shop owner as well as a DJ/producer in his hometown of Rotterdam. Together they are responsible for tracks such as ‘Strike Me Down’ on Wally Lopez’s La Factoria Records, the mighty ‘You Make Me Climb The Wall’ on Sander Kleinenberg’s Little Mountain Recordings and remixes for Danny Tenaglia, Tom Stephan, D. Ramirez and Mark Night, just to name a few.

Meanwhile, Rene met the guys from Extrema Music in Holland who were immediately taken by his determination and approach which resulted in a couple of releases that first showcased Rene’s new sound.

These included his first EP on Deep Focus called ‘Courisha’ and the breathtaking ‘I like Sex’. On the back

of these originals people were forced to sit up and take notice. Other releases that helped carve Rene’s signature sound were ‘I’ve been Away’ on Lowriders Records and ‘I’m your Doctor’ on Nu Republic, which crossed Rene’s sleazy style to bigger masses.

From then on, Rene’s career took a sharp turn upwards and forwards. Sander Kleinenberg’s imprint Little Mountain successfully released the fierce ‘Back into the Funk’ and lately we’ve seen a bunch of amazing releases come out on labels such as La Factoria, Stereo productions, Extrema, DK records and Deep Records with remixes planned for Nic Fanciulli, Jamie Anderson, Muzzaik, Lexicon Avenue and Mark Knight. New releases are scheduled for a number of labels and some will find a home at his newly established label 25 Hertz Recordings.

Opening for Rene will be DJ Steve KZ, followed by a back to back set by Paul Mendez and Jared McCulloch.

GO: Entrance is QR75 for ladies, and QR150 for men. Over 21s only, Lava Membership is required, but can be applied for on the night with valid ID.

CULTURE

Now in its third year, the Doha Taste and Fun Festival 2012 is a celebration of all things

culinary in Qatar’s capital. The event brings all the top chefs and dining outlets together to showcase their talents and products to the general public. Almost all of the food on display will be available to buy at very cheap prices, so that everyone can experience the very best dining that Qatar has to offer.

An array of food, deliciously presented by the city’s finest restaurants, cooking demonstrations by the best chefs in the country and a host of family entertainment will be available to visitors. More than 65 restaurants, cafes and hotels from across the city present their “signature” dishes for the public at the festival, which will be held behind the Doha Exhibition Centre in Al Dafna from February 8 to 11.

Arabic, Asian, Mexican, European and even “fine dining” gourmet treats will be on offer as well as entertainment, raffle prizes and a

genuine festival atmosphere with a DJ every afternoon and other performers. There will be a children’s play area with games, face painting and other fun activities and festival goers will be able to vote for the “Best Food” on offer over the weekend.

And, for the first time, a nation’s food will be showcased with a special Japanese Corner, which will mark the 40th anniversary of relations between Japan and Qatar. During the festival, the chef from the Japanese Embassy as well as a renowned chef from Tokyo will be preparing food for visitors.

All of Qatar’s top hotels as well as several high-end restaurants will take part in the festival, offering their delicious gourmet cuisine to visitors for QR5, QR10 and QR15 per plate.

“The “Taste and Fun” festival has become a much-anticipated community event in Doha,” Qatar Tourism Authority Chairman Ahmed Al Nuaimi said. “Where else can families sample gourmet food for such a reasonable price in a family-friendly atmosphere?”

Timings of the event are as follows:Wednesday February 8 from 2pm-10.30pm (official opening will be from 5pm to 7 pm); Thursday February 9 from 12pm-10:30pm;Friday February 10 from 1pm-10:30pm;Saturday February 11 from 12pm-10:30pm

GO: Entry is free and coupons are available for QR5 to purchase the dishes and all dishes are priced between QR5 and QR15. For more information, log on to www.qatartourism.gov.qa.

The Taste and Fun festival has become a much-anticipated community event in Doha

Mr. Al Nuaimi went on to emphasise the importance of events like this for Doha’s community. “Not only will visitors enjoy great food and fun entertainment, they will have the opportunity to taste dishes from other cultures which all seek to promote cultural awareness in our amazingly diverse community. We are especially excited to be showcasing Japanese food, which illustrates the special friendships between Qatar and Japan.”

Mr Al Nuaimi went on to say that the event could not take place without the support of the hospitality industry in Doha: “Their extremely positive response in 2011 means we can bring this event to the wider community and showcase what Qatar has to offer. I urge people to come along, try something new, eat well and enjoy themselves.”

Here are some (but by no means all) of the participating venues in the Doha Taste and Fun Festival 2012…

CULTURE

Participating: The Ritz CarltonThe Ritz Carlton will be showcasing the skills of Chef Ricardo Acquista

and Porcini’s infusion of Italian cuisine and molecular gastronomy. Ricardo has travelled throughout the world including Argentina and

Europe where he honed his culinary skills amongst others in Tarifa, Seville and Granada. Throughout his travels, Ricardo has worked for a number of highly acclaimed restaurants including Hacienda Benazuza, El Bulli Hotel in Sanlucar la Mayor, Spain, a two star Michelin restaurant, as well as for the prestigious El Bulli restaurant in Barcelona, Spain, a three star Michelin restaurant.

Mediterranean cuisine is Ricardo’s most desired cuisine as this is where his passion for cooking originated. During this event, he will reinvent two main common dishes using beef tenderloin and salmon and excite spectator’s palate in a whole new way.

Participating: The Torch“The Torch Doha is very proud to announce its participation at Doha

Food Festival,” says Anna Eisenbeiss, P.R. Manager of the Torch in Doha. “The event will allow us to bring to stage our top talented chefs, presenting signature dishes and demonstrating live cooking for the visitors to the event.”

The chefs will be exercising a great mix of Asian fusion cuisine using high quality products at the Torch’s Asian Wok station, presenting samples of stir fried chicken and noodles with their selection of different sauces.

The Torch is also bringing something new to the festival - the Torch Doha stand will reflect their new terrace concept, anticipating the soon-to-open Torch Café.

“We take great pride in demonstrating the best and latest Asian fusion trends The Torch has to offer,” says Anna. “Don’t miss The Torch Doha stand at Doha Food Festival. A veritable feast awaits you!”

Participating: The InterContinental Doha

The concept behind the InterCon’s participation this year is “Discover the InterContinental Doha Gastronomy”.

Georges Khalil, the hotels Executive Chef, said, “We are so excited again this year to be participating in this fantastic festival, and our presence at the event is really very important for us and to QTA as a 5 stars hotel showcase, especially as we were the winner of the best restaurant stand previously.”

This year, the hotel is going to feature the cuisine of four of their main restaurants, those being Paloma, the Belgian Café, Mikonos (see our dining review on page 48 to find out more about this restaurant), and the Fish Market. They will be showcasing some of the restaurants’ signature dishes.

The idea behind the hotel’s participation is to give the opportunity to the festival visitors to sample and taste these best-selling items all at the same time and in the same place, and even take some away to their relatives at home if they wish.

ARTS

The appeal of deformity and disease may not seem the most obvious subject matter to instigate a series of fine artworks. Then again, Leonardo da Vinci, Renaissance artist revered by many as an eccentric genius, could least be described as obvious or conventional. His renowned series ‘Grotesque Heads’, featuring pen and ink caricature drawings of disfigured people, “are some of the most copied drawings of all time,” states Professor Jesse Payne, Art and Design Foundation Assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar (VCUQ).

Professor Payne has taken his fascination of da Vinci’s ‘Grotesque Heads’ a step further by using them as inspiration for his own series of

elaborately detailed drawings, which depict deformity and dermatological conditions in greater detail.

Payne’s unique interpretation has gained attention of its own, and was recently published in the online version of leading contemporary and underground art and culture magazine Juxtapoz, and previously in the Drawing edition of American Artist (2009) in an article entitled, “Fleshing out Leonardo’s Grotesque Heads”, by Bob Bahr.

American-born Jesse Payne arrived in Qatar in July 2010 having successfully applied for the Drawing

Studio, Assistant Professor role at VCUQ. He feels lucky to have been chosen and states that

since his arrival he has enjoyed every minute of working

with his students at the university.

“More so than any other institution that I have taught at I feel like here I am truly making a difference and offering something to the students that has the potential to change their life and their country,” says Payne. “Drawing is about learning to see, of course, but more importantly drawing is a medium through which you can learn to express ideas, communicate non-verbally and think.”

So what triggered his fascination with da Vinci’s ‘Grotesque Heads’, or Leonardo’s term ‘visi monstruosi’ (monstrous faces)? “Da Vinci’s heads are something I have always been drawn to (no pun intended). They are simply so different from everything else he did in his lifetime,” Payne explains. “Scholars today still do not know if they were drawn from direct observation, his imagination or both.”

Payne’s drawing are akin to da Vinci’s. However, in contrast to da Vinci’s drawings, which are small and no more than two inches in height, Payne’s interpretations are all rendered life-size. “The heads in my drawings are the same size as ours,” claims Payne. “When an artist renders a figure larger than life-size then it immediately becomes surreal in some sense. When a figure is rendered smaller than life it then becomes illustrational.”

Payne feels that the viewer is capable of making much more of an emotional connection to a portrait that is life-size. Whereas da Vinci’s sketches are pen and brown ink, Payne has used the medium of graphite pencils, chosen because of its basic qualities allowing for subtle graduation in tone.

Therefore, it’s fair to say Payne’s heads are far more than just mere copies of da Vinci’s originals. This is demonstrated to a further extent by Payne’s embellishment, which takes the detail beyond that of da Vinci’s. ”I simply wanted to make them more grotesque. Leonardo’s drawings may be grossly deformed, but not necessarily grotesque in every sense of the word,” adds Payne.

“The skin conditions and abnormalities were my

personal touch and added a bit more to look at. I didn’t get the idea to do this until I’d already finished four drawings. I went back and added these conditions to the first four afterwards.”

He admits that regarding his working process he begins with a concrete idea of what he wants to accomplish, for example, a certain number of drawings or the scale of works, in order to keep a consistency. Outside of that he completely immerses himself into his work while keeping an open mind to new ideas as he continues; notes around his studio are later compiled to decide if there is anything worthwhile he should add to the series.

Regarding the heads, Payne worked on one drawing at a time. When near to completion he would hang it on a wall in order to study and realise anything that bothered him over a period of time, whereby after some weeks of observation he may amend certain details.

Each drawing in the series took between 60 to 80 hours to complete and completion of the series took almost two years. “This is due in large part to the nature of the medium of graphite. It’s a medium you must be patient with and has to be built up in layers if you want to avoid the many problems associated with it,” explains the artist.

To further his reasons for the series Payne describes how he wanted to create the drawings because he wanted to meet the people. He wanted them to be seen and noticed and brought to life. “I wanted to breathe life into something old. By appropriating classical drawings in contemporary times I hope to show the viewer that the power of the old can be new.”

Making these drawings today, he feels, in some way makes them contemporary. “The most challenging and exciting part of the process of making these drawings was to complete them using my own imagination.” Payne imagined that the people were standing right in front of him. The most challenging aspect was imagining what their flesh, deformities and attire would look like.

“I wanted the viewer to have this emotional connection to the work and feel free to explore their features,” explains Payne as he describes the reason why the figures are not drawn face on but more in profile. Payne began working on the images in 2008 using da Vinci’s images as a starting point and completed the project in 2010.

What are the reactions of his VCUQ students? “Funky, fun, and freaky,” he says. A typical reaction is “Wow” or “Gross”. Why take so much time to draw something so gross? they ask.

“Generally they like them because they are unlike anything they have seen people draw in this region before,” remarks Payne.

Future plans are to create some of the drawings in colour pen and ink. The artist has already converted digital images of his drawings into 3D anaglyphs which would allow the viewer to experience them in 3D with 3D glasses. Outside of his work at VCUQ Payne recently completed a series of six large-scale abstract paintings inspired by the colours of the Gulf as well as a series of works intended for the Souq.

Despite constant growth in the number of galleries and art facilities around Doha, Payne maintains that it’s quite a challenge finding a place where expatriate artists can exhibit their works, as major focus is put towards local and Arab art.

“The things that are happening at Mathaf museum are spectacular. The artists that they are choosing are world-class. What Mathaf and the Islamic Art Museum are doing through the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) are helping put Doha on the map, but eventually I think that we will need to open some contemporary galleries and start providing more opportunities for local artists to exhibit work. The creation of these galleries along with opportunities for local expat artists to show their work is the first logical step to obtaining this goal.”

Rock

Heavy Metal

WHAT’S IT LIKE: Wow... Ok, where to start... If there was one word to sum up this album, it would be experimental with a capital ‘E’. This is such a departure from what is considered the norm for Metallica that it seriously runs the risk of alienating their fans.

However, as an experimental work, it shows a level of genuis and creativity that you’d expect from a collaboration between such accomplished artists.

In some places, Lou Reed’s vocals sit badly on the Metallica instrumentals, like someone at an open mike poetry night reciting verse whilst someone plays a Metallica CD in the background.

In other places, the symbiosis between the music and the vocals is much more fluid, in tracks like ‘Iced Honey’.

‘Junior Dad’ is an orchestral epic of a track (lasting a staggering 19 minutes!) that really showcases the creative flair of all involved.

If Not Now, WhenBy Incubus

WHAT’S IT LIKE: If Not Now, When is the latest album from Californian alternative rockers Incubus, a band that has now been going for two decades! However, rather than showing a maturity with this latest album, the band seem to have taken a step backwards.

Incubus used to be experimental, avant-garde, left-field... Their material was highly original and unique, and that’s how they made their name.

With this album they seem to have given up, resorting to pandering to mainstream demands to produce an album that is bland at best, and downright boring at worst.

Some respite does come with songs like ‘Switchblade’, which shows some of the band’s old originality, and yet still fails to pack a real punch. When you reach the end of the album, you’ll find that all you can do is ask yourself the question: What the hell happened?!!

WHAT’S IT LIKE: Wasting Light is the seventh studio album from the nice guys of hard rock, the Foo Fighters, a band that has now been going for over 17 years (WOW, has it really been that long?!!) and are showing no signs of slowing down.

‘I Should Have Known’ is a highlight of the album, with a deceptively gentle ballad building into a rousing climax, whereas ‘White Limo’ is a deliciously visceral assault on the senses that is going to whip the festival crowds into a complete frenzy. The video for ‘White Limo’ is great too - a simple, low budget affair featuring the band joyriding in a retro white limo piloted by the legendary Lemmy, from Motorhead, showing that the band can still mess around and have a good time without taking themselves too seriously.

Some of Wasting Light is just more of the same from the Foo Fighters, which is no bad thing as their signature sound is what has earned them their legion of followers. However, the album is peppered with gems which show that the band, seven albums in, is still capable of being fresh, innovative and surprising, which is what makes them one of the current greats of the rock world.

Rock

WHAT’S IT LIKE: What many of you might not know is that this is actually LMFAO’s second studio album. The first, Party Rock, was released back in 2008, and generated a lot of interest within the US. However, it wasn’t until this album, and the release of the first single, ‘Party Rock Anthem’, that the group went global in a massive way, storming charts across the world with ‘Party Rock Anthem’ and the two follow up singles, ‘Champagne Showers’ and ‘Sexy And I Know It’.

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, LMFAO are a gimmick band, but one that is taking over in a huge way. Their songs are instantly likeable, with uplifting electro pop synths layered over pounding techno beats in a combination that draws you to the dance floor like some kind of weird hypnotic mind control, which is what makes the video for ‘Party Rock Anthem’ so appropriate.

The Woman in BlackD: James WatkinsC: Daniel Radcliffe, Janet McTeer, Ciarán Hinds, Roger Allam

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:A young lawyer is sent from London to a dreary town in rural England to settle the estate of a deceased woman, Alice Drablow. However, he incurs the hostility of the local villagers, who inexplicably hide their children away, and when he stays the night in the Drablow family home, he ends up facing a lot more than a mountain of legal paperwork...

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: This is a HUGELY important role for ex-Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, as he’ll be seeking to shrug off the boy wizard mantle and establish his post-Potter credentials, which will be no small feat for an actor who played the role for ten years!

This is his first time on the big screen since Potter, though he has done a fair amount of stage work in the meantime, honing his acting chops for a big career move.

However, all signs point to it being a successful transition. The movie itself looks

well directed – the cinematography, the mise en scene, the style and tone is all deliciously creepy, and Radcliffe himself looks to have matured significantly since wrapping his last Potter movie.

This could be a real breakout movie for Radcliffe, and so you know he’s going to act the absolute hell out of it, and this will hopefully translate into some good viewing.

A good supporting cast in the shape of Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer and Roger Allaem lends weight.

The important question is really which name first pops into your

head when you look at this picture: Daniel Radcliffe, or Harry Potter?

If it’s the latter, he’s screwed...

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: A ‘found-footage’ style movie, in the vein of Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity, this follows the lives of three high-school friends who make a strange discovery in a crater, and suddenly find themselves blessed with superhuman powers like telekinesis, invulnerability and flight, and begin to experiment with them.WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:It’s worth watching mainly because, when newly endowed with these superpowers, instead of embarking on a noble quest to save mankind from bad guys, these high-school boys instead embark on an epic mission of mischief, playing devious pranks on the unsuspecting public and generally messing about, which makes a refreshing change! However, what we’re REALLY looking forward to is when they start to become intoxicated with the powers, and things start to go awry. Add the twist of the ‘found-footage’ style, and you’ve got what looks to be a highly unique release.

The Innkeepers is yet another spookfest for February, with two paranormal researchers investigating the story of a haunting in an old guest house. Their investigation turns up zilch, until two old residents arrive who have some connection to the haunting’s background. The appearance of the spooky old people really gets things going, and it’s all ghosts ahead from there on in!

Wanderlust is the story of a New York married couple who are both made redundant, and have to leave the Big Apple. Whilst looking for a new place to call home, they stumble across a hippy commune. Initiallly uncomfortable with the free-living habits of the commune’s residents, they eventually begin to like it, and free love and psychedelia ensues...

They didn’t get it on in ‘Friends’, so they do it here instead!

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Rampart follows the story of an LAPD police officer, Dave Brown, who is implicated in the massive Rampart police corruption scandal involving the anti-gang CRASH unit in the late 1990s. His career all but ruined, Dave must face the bad decisions he has made during his career and live with the public shame of being involved in the scandal.WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: The Rampart scandal was one of the most shocking events of the 1990s in America, with many questioning how such widespread corruption could be allowed to take place in an American police force, so it’s surprising that it’s not until now that the subject has been visited by Hollywood. It’s also been a while since we’ve seen something good from Woody Harrelson, so the combination should be exciting!

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Aleph loosely follows the story of a journey of self-discovery by Coelho himself, when he decides that his life is too stagnant, and that he needs to get on the move.

So, he decides to take the Trans-Siberian railroad route from Moscow to Vladivostok, with a parallel mystical journey taking place alongside it.

He is joined on the journey by a mysterious young woman named Hilal, a violin virtuoso who appears one day and announces that she will be accompanying him. She won’t take no for an answer, so off they go together.

However, as the journey, both literal and spiritual, progresses, their bond becomes more complicated than either expect.

Screw Business As UsualBy Richard Branson

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:Another book by the eccentric British billionnaire chronicling his many projects, escapades and adventures, all the while coming across various celebrities and historical figures along the way.

It starts with him standing naked outside Necker Island next to Kate Winslet watching the main house burn after it was struck by lightning, and carries on in much the same way throughout.WHAT’S IT LIKE: When reading any book by Richard Branson, you can’t help but become infected by his almost childlike enthusiasm for any project he approaches. It’s this unfailing optimism and absolute refusal to accept defeat that is largely responsible for his financial success.

However, while the anecdotes are interesting and the book is generally an entertaining read, after a while you do start to become a little bit tired of his constant self-celebration and name-dropping.

Yes, Sir Richard, we know you’re great, we know you’ve met a lot of famous people and we know that you’re a billionnaire, but a little humility really wouldn’t go amiss...

The Litigatorsby John Grisham

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:Overworked and disillusioned, Harvard graduate and corporate lawyer David Zinc walks out of his firm one day, and decides to get drunk.

As a result, he finds himself working instead for the insalubrious law firm Finley & Figg, a two-man show of despicable ambulance chasers trying to build a class-action suit against a pharmaceuticals giant.WHAT’S IT LIKE: John Grisham is renowned for his legal novels - he’s churned out 23 of them so far, some good, some great.

However, just when you thought he was becoming formulaic, he comes up with this little gem. Gone is the theme of the lone small-time lawyer crusading against social injustice. Gone is the evil corporate conspiracy exposed by conscientious young upstart lawyer.

Instead, we have a beleaguered young Harvard law graduate providing the morals purely to emphasise the deliciously amoral and sleazy aspects of the book’s two best characters, Finley and Figg.

Chock full of dark humour and a tangible hedonistic glee, the litigators sees Grisham really work his sense of mischief, to great effect!

Fiction

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:The Company We Keep follows the true stories of two CIA agents who enter into a life of spying and intrigue because of a craving for excitement and danger in their lives.

However, what they find out is that in order to successfully follow their covert careers, they must make a lot of sacrifices, most notably at home with their families.

The book charts the toll that all the secrets and lies take on their family lives, which eventually disintegrate, but also how they discover each other, fall in love, and eventually find a life together thanks to shared experience and life choices.WHAT’S IT LIKE: This is an extremely interesting book for anyone interested in the real world of spying and covert government work, and not the dramatised Hollywood schlock.

It’s a sad story of deceit, secrets, cynicism and disillusionment, as both agents start to question what good their work is really doing.

However, it’s also a story of hope, when the two find each other and something good comes out of it all for both of them in the end.

Most notably, it’s a warning to anyone thinking about choosing this life for themselves.

The Company We KeepBy Robert & Dayna Baer

AlephByPaulo Coelho

WHAT’S IT LIKE:The complicated genre description of this book alludes to the fact that, while not literally autobiographical, it is in fact closely based on one of Coelho’s own spiritual journeys of self-discovery, and everything in it references revelations that he himself has experienced.

As you’d expect from Coelho, the book is full of philosophical rhetoric, with phrases such as “Life is the train, not the station” peppering the prose, and giving the book a truly spiritual element that some will love, and others will find tedious.

However, what can be said is that the book is a journey in itself!

Last year, we profiled the compact CFL bulb as the light of choice for the green-conscious person, but now it seems that LED lighting is set to take over. LEDs have been around for years, but it’s not until now that the technology is starting to become efficient, cheap and bright enough for widespread commercial use.

We’re starting to see them become widespread in things like spotlighting and torches, as well as on car headlamps. Unlike CFLs, they contain no mercury or other toxic substances. Proponents say LEDs can last some 60 times longer than incandescents and 10 times longer than CFLs. And unlike incandescents, which generate a lot of waste heat, LEDs don’t get especially hot and use a much higher percentage of electricity for directly generating light.

When it comes to saving the planet, it’s the little things that count – because collectively, a million people’s small decisions can make a big impact. So, making the right choices when buying electronics can make the difference. Read on for FACT’s guide to the best green technology…

An Eco Friendly Tech Fest!

This rather attractive piece boasts a lot more than eye-catching design and great features. This Sony Bravia 3D LED TV is also on the recommended list of eco-friendly electronics of the UK Energy Saving Trust.

It works with highly capable active shutter glasses that keep light out and reduce flicker. You can also make free video and voice calls with Skype and use other online applications through the web-enabled TV.

However, if you can’t afford this particular TV, not to worry; most of the Sony Bravia range are also on the Energy Saving Trusts list, and remember one rule that applies – in general the smaller the TV, the more eco-friendly it is, as it uses less materials to produce and consumes less energy.

The one main feature that makes Protrek watches eco-friendly is the CASIO-original high-capacity solar power system, which combines a super-sensitive solar panel that generates power even under low fluorescent light with a high-capacity rechargeable battery that operates the various high-load functions with ease. This ensures that Tough Solar watches never need a battery change.

This is in addition to a range of great features like barometer and thermometer designed for an outdoor active lifestyle.

Trade shows and exhibitions are one of the worst-performing industries in terms of environmental impact, as they often generate hundreds of tonnes of paper waste each year. Media packs, show programmes, brochures and more are all produced, wasting paper, and the production and transport of the materials consumes a lot of energy too.

Doing it all electronically has huge benefits, which is where ShowGizmo. Creating e-campaigns for shows and expos is no new thing, but this is the first fully-online downloadable and fully-customizable application that is designed specifically for such events.

Available on iPhone, Blackberry and Android, it can be tailored to each individual event’s requirements, and can incorporate practically any aspect of the event right into your smartphone. The event’s programme and brochure can be included, as well as the brochures and links for all the expo’s participants and sponsors.

Everyone’s a winner here – printing and transportation costs are reduced, and visitors to the expo don’t have to walk around carry lots of bulky and heavy printed material, which is often thrown away after the event anyway!

The application can even be used to swap contact details, reducing the need for business cards, and making it easier to update contact databases electronically.

Is there anything that Apps can’t do these days?

As a general rule of thumb, the smaller and more compact a device is, the less materials and energy was required to produce it, and the less energy it uses. Therefore, the ultra-slim and compact MacBook Air is eco-friendly by virtue of it’s very size. However, other energy-saving features add to this.

As with the MacBook Air, being minimal in terms of peripheral devices like CD drives and USB ports, and being very slim and compact, the Apple iPad requires less materials and energy to be produced, and less energy to run. So, Angry Birds are, in fact, good for the environment…

The TravelMate Series runs on a quick and energy-efficient processor, while integrated graphics help you make impressive business presentations. ENERGY STAR® compliant, this notebook features energy-smart technologies that reduce power consumption.

Produced under HP’s Design for Environment programme, the Elitebook is designed with three principles in mind: Energy efficiency – reducing the energy used in manufacturing and use; Materials innovation – reducing the amount of materials used in the products and the environmental impact, and finally; Design for recyclability.

PROS-Wireless headset-Unbelievable 3D sound B+

Major electronics outlets (Price: varies)

LAB TESTSOUNDBLASTER RECON3D/TACTIC3D OMEGA WIRELESS BUNDLECREATIVE Labs are making a move in the gaming audio segment in a big way with a range of very high quality Sound Blaster microphone/headphone units that boast industry-leading 3D audio capability.

The most impressive of these, in our humble opinion, is the Sound Blaster Tactic3D Omega Wireless, which comes bundled with the Sound Blaster Recon3D Omega Wireless device and the TacticLink wireless card for a cross-platform wireless audio experience.

Confused? So were we, so let’s break it down: The Recon3D Omega Wireless is a cross-platform USB device that enhances the audio playback for gaming through the industry-leading THX TruStudio Pro software. Plug it in to the USB port on your Xbox 360, PS3, PC or Mac, and it will create a full 5.1 surround sound experience with exceptional positional audio playback through your headset with any game you’re playing. You can literally hear exactly where gunshots or explosions are coming from in relation to your in-game position.

However, to get the optimal effect,

you have to pair it with the Tactic3D Omega Wireless headset (through the TacticLink wireless card) to get a full cable-free 3D surround sound gaming experience.

The headset also boasts a detachable noise-cancelling microphone, so that you can communicate with other gamers without heavy breathing noises and other background sounds.

And the volume, mute and connection controls are all integrated into the headset itself, so there are no cumbersome attachments or cables of any kind.

This set-up is great. With in-game car racing, you can literally hear another car pass alongside you, and tell how close it is. In games like Modern Warfare, you can pinpoint

Also, the THX TruStudio software can only be installed on PCs and Macs, and doesn’t apply to consoles, so that’s a big drawback right there.

LAB TESTLG OPTIMUS NET DUAL SIM SMARTPHONELG have made a very smart move with the Optimus Net Smartphone – instead of trying to compete with the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, what they’ve instead decided to do is create a affordable mid-range smartphone specifically for the eastern markets that boasts much of the functionality of its more glamorous counterparts at around half the price.

The Optimus Net is an Android 2.3 Gingerbread-based smartphone with dual-sim capability, so that you can either use one sim for work and one for leisure, or have sims from two different countries, allowing you to save costs on roaming when travelling, for example if you travel between the UK and Bahrain a lot.

While not as crystal clear and sharp as the displays on Galaxies or iPhones, the 3.2-inch screen is by no means poor, with responsive touchscreen performance and rich colour.

The phone also feature DLNA content sharing, to easily transfer data with other phones with the same feature.

One major drawback of the phone is that it only comes with 150MB internal memory with a 2GB memory card in the box, but it

does have the option of expanding the memory up to 32GB, putting it right up there with the best. How much this adds to the price, however, we can’t say right now.

The 3MP camera highly unimpressive, especially when other brands like the iPhone are boasting cameras of up to 8MP these days, but it serves a purpose, we suppose.

While everyone is looking to create the flashiest, best, brightest, and most beautiful smartphones, it’s nice to see someone who is thinking about functionality and budget more than impressing at the electronics expos!

Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, travels to Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi to get

to grips with Porsche’s new baby, the 2012 911 Carerra S…

Whatever you say about the 911, and there are definitely two camps, you can’t deny that it is a hugely significant car. Iconic is a word too often used in the media, but in this case, it definitely applies. Few other cars in the world have maintained their identity and ideology so clearly, for so long – almost fifty years, in fact!

Historically, I have always been in the anti-911 camp, sharing space with the likes of Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear, and his sentiment that it looks like a sporty Beetle and is only rear-wheel drive because of tradition, and not any practical reason.

My sentiments started to waver, however, when I drove the 997 4S. I began to understand why Porsche have such a strong policy of getting bums on seats, as many and as often as possible – because once you’ve driven a Porsche, you realise what a fantastic experience it is, and this is the single biggest selling point of any Porsche. However, the styling of the car still didn’t excite me as much as other sports cars did, however good the drive was.

The pro-911 camp, which includes Top Gear’s Richard Hammond, laud it as the ultimate driver’s car, and that nothing comes close in terms of the amount of driving pleasure and comfort you get for your money. They hail the style as (once again) iconic

and timeless, and an essential defining characteristic of what is “911”.

And Porsche… well, like the Christian missionaries of yore, they won’t be happy until the whole world is converted. They will keep tweaking and refining the 911, and inviting people to try them out until, one by one, the anti-911 camp is converted, and is ultimately reduced to one or two stubborn loonies who refuse to be convinced. However, one day eventually they’ll die, and Porsche’s mission will be complete!

A significant coup happened in 2010, when Jeremy Clarkson drove the 911 GT3, and announced (shock, horror!) that he wanted one, “Badly”! However, I fully predict that no single previous model will ever be as responsible for converting so many people to the 911 as this, the 991.

The first reason for this is the looks – it was the opinion, not just of myself but everyone on the trip in Abu Dhabi, that his new 911 is the best looking to date. The first thing that strikes you is how athletic and ‘un-Beetle-like’ it looks. The roofline is lower and more raked, with a more tightly angled windshield making the car look faster than its predecessor.

The side profile in general is more ‘stretched’ and dynamic. The wheels are also bigger, with a longer

wheelbase and wider track, and more pronounced rear wheel arches, all giving the car a more muscular look than the 997. This has also led to the 991 being the roomiest 911 that I’ve ever been in – there is bags of legroom and plenty of headspace despite the sportier look.

The biggest styling improvement though, in my opinion, is the rear end. It doesn’t slope down so dramatically anymore, making it look less like a Beetle and more like the GT it’s supposed to be. It also looks more modern and stylish, especially in the rear lights. We like, a lot…

I was lucky enough to have a chat with the man behind the design of the new 911, a very nice chap by the name

of Michael Mauer, who is the head of the Porsche Design Department (and the guy who drew the rather cool sketch of the new 911 you’ll see on the following pages).

My first question? The obvious (well, to me anyway): If the last generation was the 997, and the one before that the 996,

then why is this one the 991, and not the 998?

The answer: “It just is.”Ok…Apparently, and strangely enough

for a German car manufacturer, there is no logic towards the model

ALI DRIVER SAYS THAT

the 911 range to date…”

designations of the 911; the model numbers are assigned through pure random selection. It’s something to do with keeping new models secret by choosing random numbers that don’t have anything to do with the cars themselves.

Sensing that the chat was going well, I decided to push my luck, and ask about recent rumours and so-called ‘leaked’ design sketches flying around on the internet relating to a resurrection of the front-engined Porsche 928.

He was suitably vague! “We are currently in the process of exploring different

paths, as you can see with the Cayenne, and the Panamera, so it’s expected that we would consider the possibility of a front-engined car like the 928, possibly a Panamera derivative, but possibly something completely new. There are many different design ideas around the office at any given time. But there is absolutely nothing official right now, and nothing you’ve seen on the internet came from us!”

The general impression I got from further probing was that, while the idea has certainly been proposed, and even some sketches made, nothing has gone any further than that… but there was a tangible “Yet” in there somewhere!

So, back to the 911.The driving experience of the 991 takes the 911 into

new realms of achievement – the jump in performance from the 997 is huge. To give you some perspective on how good this car is, the 991 Carrera S lapped the infamous Nürburgring in seven minutes and forty seconds, which is 14 seconds faster than its predecessor, and the same time as the 997 GT3 – an absolutely phenomenal achievement!

All this is despite an engine that consumes 16% less fuel than the previous generation, with an average fuel consumption of 8.2l per 10km, and CO2 emissions of 194g/km, making it the first Porsche to reach below 200g/km.

What is this sorcery?Much of it is down to the fact that the new 911 is

“In my opinion, it’s the best looking 911 that Porsche have ever produced...”

Qatar feb Issue.indd 37 25/01/2012 18:36

38 FACT QATAR FEBRUARY

45kg lighter than before, thanks to an all-new lightweight body, with around 90% of the components of the car either brand new or significantly revised.

Other factors are the auto start/stop function, featured for the first time ever on a Porsche, which shuts down the engine at traffic lights to conserve fuel, and the coasting function which further conserves fuel.

And the amazing performance is principally down to Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), both of which are posh names for systems that basically do very simple things. The PDCC is an active anti-roll system that stiffens the suspension in the relevant wheels when you turn, for example the front outside wheel, so that all four wheels have maximum grip.

The PTV, to put it VERY simply, controls the speed of the rear inside wheel to essentially ‘drag’ the car around a corner. As one of Porsche’s drivers explained to us, “It’s like floating along in a canoe, and sticking your oar in the water towards the rear on one side, which will pull you round to that side.”

The PDCC was first featured on the Cayenne, but is now available as an option on the 991 Carrera S. Its main benefit is that it serves to address a traditional problem with the 911, which is understeer. The PTV is standard on the Carrera S.

The result of the combination of these two technologies is breathtaking. The new 911 handles with a precision and poise that is almost supernatural. Despite being rear-engined, the

911 feels almost as balanced as the mid-engine Cayman… almost.

And now we come to one of my favourite bits – the Sport Plus Button. Many slate the ‘sport button’ as a pointless feature on a sports car, as they seldom make much difference, except maybe to the sound, and sports cars should just be sports cars anyway!

However, the 911 begs to differ. As I first drove the car out onto the streets of Abu Dhabi, I began to think how tame the whole experience was. Comfortable, yes, and smooth, definitely, but decidedly tame. Then I looked down and sighted the Sport

Plus button, and decided to give it a go.

Wow.The engine note changed, and

it revved harder, the suspension stiffened and the throttle response tightened. It felt like a completely different car altogether. It went from an everyday luxury sports coupe to a

track-ready monster in the simple push of a button.

And the Sport Plus button is totally necessary for a car like the 911, which touts itself as an everyday drive, because in Sport Plus mode it would become tiresome driving it every day on normal roads – you’d be constantly fighting the urge to floor it and race everything that moved. Also, the jarring gear changes and hair-trigger throttle would start to irritate. When you reach a twisting mountain road, or take it on a circuit, however, you can press the button and have all the fun you want! You really get the best of both worlds.

With the interior, Porsche have followed the design cues of the raised centre console as seen in the Cayenne and the Panamera, although it is much slimmer in the 911. The overall effect of this console is that you feel as if you’re sitting lower, and it cocoons you so that you feel more connected to the car, like a jet pilot in a cockpit. The leather seats are air-conditioned, and very comfortable, and add to all this the roominess that I mentioned previously, and you have the most pleasurable interior to feature in a 911 so far.

So well done Porsche – in your crusade to indoctrinate the world to the 911 cult, another great battle has been won! You have produced a version that Ali Driver, FACT’s infamous Mystery Motoring Expert, would actually like to own. He is converted.

1. He lives in Qatar and says he grew up hard on the mean streets of Doha, but we think he’s actually from a rich family with lots of cars, and won’t admit it! 2. He says his car skills are all self-taught, but we’re sure we’ve seen a course certificate from the Losail International Circuit on his wall. 3. He drives cars better than anyone we know (but don’t ever tell him). 4. He claims to be able to change a regular car tyre in under 4 minutes, but we’re sure that’s only when his wife helps him.

Who is Ali Driver?

“The PTV and PDCC combine to make this the best-handling Porsche 911 ever made too...”

Mykonos welcomes a brand new Chef de Cuisine, Konstantinos, who’s flair and ideas for innovative cuisine are based on the concept that delicious, healthy food is a major contribution to the ‘Good Mood Food’ feel good factor (which is more than a mouthful to say)!

“The new menu offers exciting Mediterranean flavours and enhances the idea that fresh, healthy ingredients are a major factor as to how a meal can affect our mood. Certain ingredients contribute to our feeling of wellbeing, which is my inspiration behind the Good Mood Food concept,” explains Chef Konstantinos whose new menu will be fully introduced this month. Plus certain evenings will incorporate Greek regional theme nights.

Examples from the new a la carte menu are Almond-Coated Goat Cheese served with olive chutney and mix greens – a circle of creamy goat cheese laden with flaky almonds which is a delight and easy to feast on. Remind yourself this is just a starter though…

On a lighter note, Fresh Rocket Salad with marinated artichokes, pine nuts, parmesan flakes and lemon vinaigrette combines ingredients you may rarely experience (who cooks artichokes at home?), so it’s quite a treat.

An a la carte main dish that deserves a culinary Oscar is the Battered Fried Fish with marinated beetroot salad and saffron aioli. It’s a paradise of

mouthwatering Perch on a plate, alongside dainty cubes of beetroot and a smear of fragrant saffron loveliness.

Thanks to Chef Konstantinos, lunchtime brings the new ‘Good Mood Food’ three course set menu for QR115. Start with divine tasting Spinach Salad with fresh berries, cucumber, walnuts, feta and balsamic dressing and you’ll be addicted.

Follow on the heavenly taste trail with Grilled Tenderloin marinated in true wellbeing herbs (cooked to perfection) served with baby green stew and parsley oil – not a dish you’ll want to share with anyone!

After an artistically presented desert of Tropical Fruit Tartar with lime sorbet, chilled basil and lavender consommé you’ll feel totally satisfied without feeling stuffed and your mood will no doubt be elevated!

What’s your

QATAR

S.A.T’s? M.B.A’s? Pah! In Qatar, only one test score really matters: your Qatar IQ!

It’s Valentine’s Day this month. Do you:a celebrate the love of your life with extravagant gifts and a romantic dinner?b throw an anti-Valentine’s Day party where only singles are allowed, in blatant defiance of love’s special day?c sit at home alone, watching Friends, and silently cry into your giant plate of chocolate fudge brownies?

James Blunt is playing a live gig in Doha this month. Do you:a buy two tickets, and treat your loved one to a romantic evening of the English singer’s balladry for Valentine’s Day?b avoid it completely – you’d rather eat glass?c James who?

The Doha Taste & Fun food festival takes place this month. Do you:a attend every single day, and eat yourself stupid sampling the culinary treats from the 60-odd participating restaurants, thereby undoing all the good work you’ve done getting fit and healthy since the festive season?b avoid it completely – you’re on a strict diet, and can’t afford to be faced with such temptation?c go along and improve your cooking skills by watching the world-class chefs from Qatar’s best restaurants create culinary masterpieces right before your very eyes?
