POST-SHOW REPORTThe American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) 2012 Annual Convention & Exhibition brought together 5,272 professionals from 72 countries for a world-class event designed for geoscientists who are Directing the Future of E&P: Starring Creative Ideas and New Technology.

Hosted by the AAPG Pacific Section and chaired by Kay L. Pitts, Aera Energy, the convention featured a comprehensive technical program of 416 oral and 628 poster presentations on everything from Emerging Frontiers to Active Oil and Gas Fields; Structural Geology and Neotectonics to Geosciences Principles and Applications along with a healthy dose of Carbonates, Siliciclastics and Unconventional Reservoirs.

Highlights included the Michel T. Halbouty Lecture with John Grotzinger, Chief Scientist for the Mars Science Laboratory, and Jim Reilly, AAPG member and former Space Shuttle Astronaut handling the opening credits for Dr. Grotzinger; the AAPG Ethics Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. W. C. “Rusty” Riese; and Switch — an energetic documentary featuring AAPG Past President Scott W. Tinker.

The Imperial Barrel Awards competition brought together 12 teams from around the world — one from each section and one from each region. The winning team was from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Capturing second place was the team from the Khon Kaen University, Thailand, representing AAPG’s Asia/Pacific Region, and third place went to the team from Colorado School of Mines.

HERE iS SOmE ATTENDEE fEEDBACK fROm OUR 2012 CONvENTiON iN LONG BEACH:

“Excellent show for networking.” Robert D., Canada

“One of the better conventions I’ve attended in the past 10 years with excellent talks and facilities.” Mark L., Colorado

“Great meeting!!!” Morgan S., Texas

“It was great! Very professional, and as a poster presenter, I was impressed with the layout, and outcome!” Natalie H., California

“I really enjoyed myself at this conference. VERY well organized. Great diversity in the oral and poster presentations. I met a lot of great geoscientists from all over the world, and appreciated the arranged discounts for conference at-tendees for some of the local visitor hot spots (eg., the aquarium). As a university student, I got exactly what I was hoping for with this conference - 1) saw great talks that are very applicable to my work, 2) expanded my working knowledge, 3) got great feedback on my work through a poster presentation, and 4) met some new people.” Victoria W., Canada
