AGRICULTURE Widespread adoption of techno-logical advances has enabled an

industry worth AUD1.2 billion to thrive in Tropical North Queensland. With expertise in industries including sugar, coffee, bananas, mangoes, fishing and aquaculture, the region is also a major supply base for agricultural services and products like seeds, fertiliser and harvesting equipment. In Cairns, the Australian Tropical Forest Institute is a globally renowned research institute and features the Australian Tropical Herbarium – a collection of over 170,000 plant specimens.

TROPICAL HEALTH AND MEDICINE The Cairns region is a global hub of specialist knowledge in this field.

The Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine at James Cook University focuses on research relevant to tropical Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and the Queensland Tropical Health Alliance Lab at the James Cook campus in Cairns has researchers collaborating to alleviate the burden of tropical diseases such as malaria.

TOURISM With unique natural assets as drawcards, the Cairns region hosts

2.3 million visitors per year, contributing AUD3.1 billion to the economy. Cairns has well developed tourism infrastructure and a highly-skilled workforce, and James Cook University has been ranked first in the world for excellence in tourism research, with particular expertise in tourism in the tropics.

Australia’s largest regional university, Central Queensland University, and James Cook University, ranked in the top four per cent of the world’s tertiary institutions. BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIO FERTILISER Located between the rainforest

and the reef, Cairns is an ideal location for tropical forest science, biopharmaceuticals, natural resource management and research, and the development of marketable products. OIL AND GAS With abundant resources and proximity to Asian markets, Darwin

is an international oil and gas hub. The Ichthys LNG Project has the longest subsea pipeline in the Southern Hemisphere and is one of the largest gas projects in the world. MINING The Northern Territory hosts some of the largest mines and mineral

RESOURCES AND ENERGYWestern Australia is one of the world’s most productive and

diversified mineral and petroleum regions, with the largest reserves of iron ore and is tracking to become the largest exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas.
