Growing access to healthcare Through the acquisition of KentuckyOne Health’s Louisville-area assets, including Jewish Hospital, the university expanded its UofL Health enterprise and the ability to ensure access to quality healthcare for patients across the entire community. About 5,500 former KentuckyOne employees joined UofL Health and the access to the additional facilities will boost training opportunities and research capacity for UofL students and faculty.

Fulbright full house UofL continued its impressive streak of Fulbright scholars, with 14 students winning the prestigious scholarship for international travel and study in 2019. Since 2003, 133 students have received Fulbrights, more than all other Kentucky public institutions combined.

Closing the Tech Gap Through the establishment of a new Skills Academy, UofL and IBM are bridging the digital divide. The skills academy is the frst of its kind that IBM has developed with a higher education institution and will provide curriculum and educational tools concentrated on eight fast growing technology areas: artifcial intelligence, blockchain technology, cybersecurity, cloud computing, internet of things, quantum computing, data science and design thinking.

Their World’s a Stage Theatre Arts graduate students Kala Ross and LaShondra Hood won the distinguished National Irene Ryan Acting Award at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Washington, D.C. It was the frst time students from UofLs theatre arts department took home the prestigious prize. Both students received scholarships for their win.

Top Rankings UofL once again landed among the top U.S. institutions for research activity. For the fourth time, the Carnegie Classifcation of Institutions of Higher Education designated UofL a Research 1” doctoral university

with “very high research activity.” Additionally, the university is recognized as a Carnegie Community Engagement University, making it one of only 69 schools in the country to receive both classifcations.

Planning for Success President Neeli Bendapudi launched the university s 2019 2022 Strategic Plan, geared to make the University of Louisville a great place to learn, work and invest while fostering diversity, equity and inclusion. Over the next three years, the campus community will focus on initiatives including experiential learning, increasing access to fnancial aid, adding professional development opportunities and increasing business and industry partnerships.

Now on Display World renowned artist and double alum Sam Gilliam ’55, 61 is still working hard at age 85. The painter, widely known for his use of saturated color and his highly improvisational technique, entered into a partnership with Pace Gallery in New York City. The collaboration marks the frst time his work has been represented by a gallery in New York, but Gilliam is not a stranger to the art world. He has created dozens of public art pieces, some of which can be found in Detroit, New York, Atlanta, San Francisco and Boston. Gilliam s work is in the permanent collections of 56 museums and he has honorary doctorates from eight universities.

Kommor and Associate Professor of Pediatrics Bethany Hodge designed the frst published disaster medicine certifcate series for medical students in the country and perhaps the world. More than 130 students took part in the certifcate series which is now the medical school s largest supplemental program.

Scoring in the Classroom UofL student-athletes achieved a record 91% graduation rate in the latest Graduation Success Rate Report. The Cardinals’ GSR has risen 25% since reporting began 15 years ago.
