It is an honor and
a pleasure to be your
new FFSJ President. So
many things are changing
and there is much to
learn. My theme comes
from advice my Mom
gave me as a young girl.
We all need to “Climb
High” and be the best we
can be. There are chal-
lenges ahead….so, “Hold
on Tight”, things may get
a little challenging, but
we will persevere.
You will achieve
your goals one step at a
time. Be patient and
kind to yourself and oth-
ers.
Have you ever
given up on a project that
appeared to be too diffi-
cult, only to look back
and see that if you had
stayed with it, it could
have been done? Haven’t
we all!
Finally, “Do Not
be Afraid”. Your FFSJ Offi-
cers and Chairmen are
here to support and help
you. Our meetings will
include programs of in-
terest to you and sharing
of ideas.
The September
2017 FFSJ Meeting on
September 6th
will in-
clude a program with
Kathleen Hawryluk using
leaf manipulations in de-
sign. Bring your clippers
to create your own
“masterpiece” to share
with others. Plant materi-
als and container pro-
vided by FFSJ.
The Silent Auc-
tion …
where
you
buy
“stuff”
and
sell to other designers and
gardeners will be easy to
do. The form was attached
to the FFSJ Call Letter.
Print it, fill it out and bring
with your items to sell.
One form for each item. No
pre-registering required!
Bring some extra
seeds from your garden
and swap with others.
Good food, great
friends and a wonderful
program with hands on
experience! What more
could you ask for…Join Us!

From Barbara May, Design Editor
In my last article, I promised to discuss the new designs types and some of the issues that
we are facing when we judge them.
Grouped Mass Design: Handbook: p. 78 An advanced Design: A mass design of only plant
material with radial placement.
Like material is grouped and placed next to other different grouped like material.
Additional plant material may be included, but the proportion of groupings dominate the
design.
Plant material emanates from one (1) point of emergence.
A question arose concerning how many are in a group? A group is three or more. Please remem-
ber this cannot be a traditional design since we use no transitional material. Using several openings
in a container to appear as one design is also NOT acceptable. All the plant material must come
from one point.
When judging, look to see if all forms are actually grouped; allow for some additional plant material.
Check for one point of emergence. If the Designer has fulfilled these requirements, you must give
them full credit for conformance. You may feel there are design faults, but that is an issue to be
deducted under Design Qualities and not under Conformance.
Featured Plant Material: Handbook p. 74. A design with an emphasis on one plant species.
Any part/s of the plant may be used.
Other components are subordinate and may be used to enhance the featured plant mate-
rial.
The focus is on the chosen species
The schedule may specify the Design Style and/or plant material to be used.
The most important words in this description are “emphasis and subordinate”.
When judging, make certain the chosen species dominates the design. When we use the word sub-
ordinate, it implies that something dominates. Do not be distracted by any additional plant material
as long as it is subordinate to the featured material. Again, we give the designer as much latitude as
we can in conformance and penalize a poor design under the other areas available on the point
scoring form.
The Summer 2017 edition of The National Gardener, included an article from the NGC
Flower Show Schools Chairman. She addressed some of the new requirements and changes in the
2017 edition of THE HANDBOOK FOR FOWER SHOWS. The final paragraph of her article addressed
an issue that has been a concern of this Editor. She states we can best make the transition to this
new book “By exemplifying the ethics and etiquette you learned early on. Be honest, fair, generous,
kind, courteous and dependable.” Lately, this editor has been hearing comments from Judges and
Students that some of the “Judges have been difficult and not nice to each other”. That they have
insinuated themselves into other panel discussions and requested that other panels change the rib-
bons that were awarded. I assume, as you read these comments, you are as concerned as I am.
Judges are held to a higher standard and there should never be this kind of talk surround-
ing them. We need to be kind not only to our exhibitors, but also to each other and remember that
we can only be responsible for those areas we judge. I suggest all Judges read pgs. 97- 99 in the
new Handbook to refresh our ethics and manner of behavior
As the Fall season approaches, and we begin to see more Flower Shows, please be gener-
ous with your judging assignments. The new Handbook requires all levels of Judges to judge a
Flower Show before they can audit a Symposium. This will require more shows and judges who are
willing to help each other fulfill their requirements.
The pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family. It is extremely rare that
bromeliads produce edible fruit. The pineapple is
the only available edible bromeliad today.
It is a multiple fruit. One pineapple is actually made up of dozens of individual
floweret's that grow together to form the entire fruit. Each scale on a pineapple
is evidence of a separate flower.
Pineapples stop ripening the minute they are picked. No special way of storing
them will help ripen them further. Color is relatively unimportant in determining
ripeness. Choose your pineapple by smell. If it smells fresh, tropical and sweet, it
will be a good fruit.
The more scales on the pineapple, the sweeter and juicier the taste.
After you cut off the top, you can plant it. It should grow much like a sweet potato will.
This delicious fruit is not only sweet and tropical; it also offers many benefits to our health. Pineapple is a remarkable fruit.
We find it enjoyable because of its lush, sweet and exotic flavor, but it may also be one of the most healthful foods available today.
If we take a more detailed look at it, we will find that pineapple is valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis or sinusitis.
The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms.
Let's look at how pineapple affects other conditions.
Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pine-
apple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount. It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to
become brittle with age.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple's value. Proteolytic means "breaks down protein", which is why pineapple
is known to be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently. Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-
inflammatory.
Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis. It
also produces mild pain relief.
In Germany, bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is thought to reduce inflammation and swelling.
Orange juice is a popular liquid for those suffering from a cold because it is high in Vitamin C. Fresh pineapple is not only high in
this vitamin, but because of the Bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucous in the throat. If you have a cold with a productive
cough, add pineapple to your diet. It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucous
after certain sinus and throat operations.
Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems related to allergies. In and of itself, pineapple has a
very low risk for allergies.
Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. This makes it a valuable dietary addition for frequent fliers and oth-
ers who may be at risk for blood clots.
An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice. It really works! Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morn-
ing often make a difference.
It's also good for a healthier mouth. The fresh juice discourages plaque growth.

but do not substitute for the plant’s botanical designation, due to the regional nature of
common names.

New Judging Requirements by Sondra Quinn, Florida Judges Credentials Chairman
Links to Forms and Registrations
Beginning January 2018, new requirements for judges will “kick in”! (See Chapter 12 in the new Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017). Judges applying for approval of their credentials must use the new forms. Please note that requirements for Accredited Life and Accredited Master levels have changed. There is a judging requirement for both levels on the new forms. Also, there are now separate forms for Life (15L) and Master (15M) Judges. New forms are available online at: http://www.nationalgardenclubs.org/schools/fss-forms.aspx Form 13 Refresher Credit for Accredited Judges, Level 2 Application Form 15L Renewal of Life Good Standing Application Form 15M Master Judges Good Standing Application
If you haven’t yet purchased a new Handbook, you can order one online from National Gar-den Clubs, Inc. at www.shopgardenclub.org.
Unfortunately, my links are not working correctly. I hope to have that fixed for our next edition.
So, included as separate documents attached in this email are: October Symposium registration form; Spring 2018 Symposium
registration form; and the reimbursement form from Andrea Finn for any expenses you have incurred.
I apologize for any inconvenience this causes, but do not want to delay releasing the newsletter in a timely manner.
The other links included (sent to me by others) all seem to work—good luck!

REGISTRATION FEES: As per vote of the NGC Board of Directors on May 18, 2017, the $5.00 registration fee for all school courses,
refreshers, and symposiums are eliminated as of July 1, 2017.
REGISTRATION FORMS: For those refreshing in 2017, you may use the old forms because they are grandfathered in as far as the
requirements go. For 2018, you must use the new forms because the new requirements will kick in. Actually, the state chairman
can be as lenient and forgiving as you please taking into consideration who is using what! As long as you can verify the credits you
are claiming, either will do. Also, remember that you can earn a judging credit just by serving on a Master panel for a FSS or
symposium…..easy one! (From Dot Yard)
FORMS: FFSJ has been using two forms which should have been approved prior to their use. This approval will likely be ratified at
the September meeting.
The first form is the Silent Auction form which is used to record items being sold at the State Meeting. The owner receives an
amount requested if the item is sold, and any excess amount is paid to FFSJ State.
The second form is one Andrea Finn will use to pay for all and any expenses incurred in the running of our organization. Receipts
must accompany the form for funds to be paid.
Both of these forms have been attached.
FFSJ INFO IN FFGC WEBSITE: Did you know there is a section in the FFGC website where Flower Show Judges information is lo-
cated? If you log onto FFGC.org, you will find a “Members” tab. When you click on this, a drop down menu will appear and an
option will be “Flower Show Judges”. This will take you to a Flower Show Judges page which will include a link to Factual Notes for
Judges, our FSJ Board and our FFSJ Bylaws and Standing Rules.
From the FFGC Home page, you can find information on every club, classes being offered, symposiums, board meetings, forms,
events and all sorts of things pertaining to judges and members alike. Use the search box to help locate what you are looking for.
If you haven’t explored the website lately, take a stroll—you’ll be amazed at the information that is available to you right at your
fingertips!

There are options for you when and if you decide to print this newsletter. It does not have to be printed in color! And,
you don’t have to print all the pages!
Instead of hitting your printer icon, go in through “File” and hit “print”. This will take you to your printer’s settings page.
Click on properties and you will find an option labeled “Black/Grayscale”. If you choose this option, your entire newsletter will be
printed in black and white.
When you click “File” and “print” and are in your printer’s setting page, you can see where you have options as to which
pages you would like to print. You can number them—follow the prompt for your printer—or you have the option of printing the
“current page”. This is also where you would put in the numbers of copies you want.
If you have suggestions or comments concerning Factual Notes for Judges, please contact Mary Silas or myself and let us
know. This newsletter is for you, Judges! We want you to love it!
