Resound Falmouth 2011 is a three-day festival of sound art, contemporary audio performance and installation in Falmouth/Penryn in Cornwall, UK, March 25-27. Resound profiles a range of sound works, sound interventions, installations, live performances, works for broadcast, including radio interventions. Resound is also organizing a mass performance of the selected pieces from car stereos on the morning of the last day of the festival, culminating with a drive past finale. The University of Tennessee at Martin is moving the Department of Nursing to the newly renamed College of Education, Health, and Behavioral Sciences. The change is effective July 1. Nursing previously was a department in the College of Agricul- ture and Applied Sciences. The change provides “a better fit with disciplines more closely aligned with nursing and will facilitate more interdisciplinary initiatives,” said Dr. Victoria Seng, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and Department of Nursing in- terim chair. Seng added that nursing shares similarities with several programs in the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, as it is currently named, in terms of additional admission requirements, supervision of students in off-campus clinical experiences and prep- aration of students for licensure after graduation. “We are excited about the potential for cross-disciplinary work with nursing and other majors such as social work, psychology or exercise science,” said Dr. Mary Lee Hall, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences dean, who supported the move and the new college name. The change was announced at the recent University of Tennessee Board of Trustees winter meeting in Chattanooga. Nursing joins College of Education, Health, Behavioral Sciences The Department of Music recently hosted the 32nd An- nual High School Honor Band Festival and Junior High Honor Band Festival. The combination of these two events brought more than 300 student musicians to campus, as well as their directors and parents, repre- senting more than 50 different schools throughout the western and middle Tennessee regions. Participating students were exposed to a variety of nationally recog- nized educators including Dr. Rebecca Phillips, associ- ate director of bands at the University of South Caro- lina; Joel Denton, director of bands at Ooltewah High School; Dennis Aquilina, fine arts chair at Thomas Hart Middle School in Pleasanton, Calif.; and Matthew Strat- ton, UT Martin instructor of music. The collaboration between these clinicians and students resulted in two concerts, which were both hosted in Duncan Ballroom. The events were hosted by Dr. Nola Jones, director of bands, and coordinated by Dr. Andrew M. Bliss, lecturer of music. The University of Tennessee will in- crease its minimum starting pay rate to $8.50 an hour, effective July 1, 2011. The increase in the minimum starting pay rate was a recommendation from UT’s Compensation Advisory Board and is a first step in a long-term and stra- tegic plan to address compensation at the university. The pay rate increase was prompted by input from university employees state- wide to the UT Board of Trustees’ Ef- fectiveness and Efficiency for the Future Committee, UTalk and various employ- ee representative groups regarding con- cern for the pay of co-workers in UT’s first three pay grades. When it takes effect July 1, the in- crease in the minimum starting pay rate will impact approximately 270 current regular full- and part-time employees working on UT campuses across the state. The university’s minimum pay rate is currently $7.50 an hour. the university. This increase in the minimum starting pay rate is a first step in a long-term process.”

The Compensation and Advisory Board was formed in March 2010 and is guided by Chief Human Resources Officer Linda Hendricks. The group is working to create UT’s first-ever strategic compensation plan and will be advancing more recommendations in the coming months and years.

A total of 42 UT Martin employees will receive the pay increase at a cost of $51,645. Campuses made it a priority to reallocate existing money in their budgets for this adjust-ment.

“I am pleased this increase is becoming a reality and, hopefully, we will be able to better address compensation for all employees in the near future,” said Chancellor Tom Rakes. “Our employees are an important reason the UT Martin experience works.”

Additional communication and training efforts are in process to support effective im-plementation of the minimum pay rate increase.
