PROGRAMME STRUCTUREEach of our undergraduate degrees is off ered to students with a one-year professional paid work placement (four year programme) or without this placement (three year programme).

The four-year programme (including one-year professional, paid work placement) contains identical academic content in Years 1 and 2 as that of the three year programme. The major diff erence is the placement with a business organisation in Year 3. Research informs us that the 12-month placement enhances the academic performance in Year 4.

The decision whether to undertake a placement year or not is left to the student. If you choose to undertake this, you will be supported by a Placement Tutor from Chester Business School who will visit you and your employer to help and advise you both. Many students will fi nd that a year’s placement enhances their academic performance in their fi nal year and increases their employability.

Most of our programmes may be studied as a combined honours degree on a three-year full-time basis, giving students greater fl exibility and choice. Your module combinations in your second and third years depend on whether you choose to study elements of the business programme as a major, equal or minor subject. All undergraduate students are expected to have

completed and passed 360 credits at the end of their programme to be eligible for the award of a Bachelor’s degree.

Mariam Ghudushauri

I chose to study at the University of Chester because of the partnership that my University in Georgia has with Chester. I found my experience at Chester awarding and amazing, the memories of which will always stay with me. The University staff are very helpful and friendly, and were always ready to give support to students. I enjoyed the process on working on assignments and a dissertation which involved a lot of self-studying. My supervisor and all my lecturers were always ready to give me support, which helped me to complete my degree successfully. The city of Chester is beautiful historic city which has lots of clubs, shops and restaurants. The city centre is only a short

distance from the Campus. While living and studying in Chester I also worked part-time at Chester Racecourse, the oldest racecourse in England, which was a great and fun experience. I also visited Liverpool, Manchester and London with my friends which were easy to travel to from Chester. The knowledge and experience I gained at Chester helped me to fi nd a very interesting job back in Georgia where I am working as an Investments Project Manager currently working on World Bank projects at the United Water Supply Company of Georgia.

I chose to study in UK because I was attracted by the teaching style of English education. This will be really helpful to my future life. The University of Chester is a very beautiful place and my lecturers are very nice. My fi rst impression was: I am going to study in a garden.

The biggest change in myself after I came here, is I can now live like the local people and try to feel the happiness of English people. It is a good experience.

I am trying to get high marks of my subject so that I can fi nd a well-paid job in UK in the future. I also plan to do business in China in the future because I am aware of the business managing diff erence between China and UK. It will be a challenge to me but I like it.

A recent graduate, Yogender found the right balance between the city of Chester and the University, as he was able to follow his interests while achieving notable academic success.

Yogender Singh Raghav, originally from Alwar, Rajasthan in India, wanted to come to England to study at Masters level after earning his undergraduate degree in India. Following some research, he was drawn to Chester because of factors such as its status as a heritage city, the Roman culture, the contrast to the history of Rajasthan and Chester’s historic racecourse – the oldest still in use in Britain. Yogender’s big passion in life is horses and so he has spent a lot of time at Chester Racecourse, where he was able to make many friends, and pursued his interest further by becoming a member of the University’s Equestrian Club.

In addition, Yogender was able to capitalise on his time at the University by being an excellent student. Studying for an MBA in Business Administration, Yogender focused his dissertation on the service quality of the University’s own International Higher Education Offi ce. He concentrated his research on service quality in higher education using SERVQUAL, a prominently used method to measure service quality across the sectors in businesses. And his hard work paid off , as he earned the highest possible distinction for a Masters dissertation. Since then, his work has proved to be invaluable to the University and has also been published in the Journal of the World Universities Forum, following an invitation to the 2012 international World Universities Forum in Greece.

The Chester Business School MBA is designed to provide aspiring managers and those wishing to accelerate their management careers with the knowledge and capability to think and work strategically, as well as the softer skills needed to succeed as a leader.

The University has promoted strong links with various world-class private and public sector organisations in the surrounding area. The expertise these organisations possess has inspired the design of our MBA programme to meet the challenges of the modern-day business environment.

The programme aims to provide our students with a mature understanding of the various interrelated subject areas in the broad discipline of Business and Management.

MBA PROGRAMME WITH SPECIALISATIONS The MBA programme consists of three stages. There are six taught modules in Stages 1 and 2 – one of which is an elective providing you the opportunity to specialise. Stage 3 comprises a Research Methods module and a Dissertation.

The Preparing for Research module will involve the submission of written elements and the presentation of your Research Proposal. This is an important aspect preparing you for the Research Project. The Research Project itself is between 14,000 and 16,000 words. It must demonstrate your ability to plan and conduct research at Masters level. This is an important element of the MBA programme which you undertake independently but with support and guidance from your research supervisor.

Well . . . To be very honest, I chose the University of Chester, UK because of two things:

1) Ranking of Business School (Guardian 2013)2) Economical Tuition Fee

It’s really very hard to fi nd a good business school which does not compromise on its quality of teaching even on such an economical price. I have noticed the rate of change in the rankings of this business school which evolved from merely an average rank to a very good rank of about 37, which is very rare to see in the cases of other business schools. It indicates how much eff ort the University is putting each year to grow and picture itself in the league of the fi nest business schools. So far, it has been an enriching experience to study in a country like UK because here there are so many opportunities for learning. Teaching style diff ers from the traditional Asian teaching style because here students are encouraged to emphasise more on self-study and group-related activities like healthy and positive group discussions. The weather here was diffi cult to adjust to, at fi rst due to the falling of temperatures, but I gradually got used to it. Being a Muslim, I did not encounter any kind of problems regarding food because there are many shops as well as restaurants where you can purchase Halal Food.

Personally I am a very social guy. I made many new friends here especially from India, China, Nigeria and Germany. It was really great to interact with them because being a good manager, it’s very vital for you to know what kind of cultures/ethics exist within the people of diff erent nationalities and how they cope up with challenges. I really enjoyed visiting places like Huddersfi eld, Manchester, Leeds and London.

Chester students thanked by the Council for helping two high-profi le eventsStudents from the University of Chester have been given a well-earned thank you for their eff orts in helping Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Arts and Festivals team deliver two high-profi le events in 2012.

In May, members of the University events society assisted in stewarding Chester’s successful Olympic torch celebrations, helping the well-received event run smoothly.

After the success of the partnership, it was decided to give the society an opportunity to have a more involved role for another of Chester’s big events; the Christmas Lights Switch On.

The students gained vital experience and assisted in all areas of the event, from helping to write the initial event plan, conducting risk assessments right the way through to stewarding the 6,000 strong crowd on the night.

At the ceremony, held at the University, the students received certifi cates and thanks from the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Pamela Booher and Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Tim Wheeler. Special thanks were given to Chloe Griffi n and Daniel McDermott-Roe who drove forward the plans and coordinated the stewarding on the night.

Councillor Booher said: “These students have really taken the opportunity to further develop their skills by working with us on two of our high-profi le events.

“The assistance they provided was invaluable and we look forward to working closely with the University in the future to provide more opportunities for their students.”

Professor Wheeler stated: “The University is committed to developing students who can apply their knowledge in practical ways and prides itself on encouraging them to work with, and benefi t, the wider community.

“Groups such as the Chester Events Society embody these ideals and it is wonderful to see and celebrate these successes”

Pictured below are the students with Councillor Booher.

A group of enterprising students from the University of Chester has been given the exciting opportunity to travel to Rio de Janeiro for the Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2013 (GEC2013) thanks to the support of the local business community. An original and unique initiative, ‘Destination Rio’ challenged teams of students to meet the mission of transforming an initial investment of just £10 into the profi ts necessary to fund travel to the GEC 2013 through a series of tasks designed to test their enterprise skills.

Twenty teams embarked upon the fi rst stage, a 48-hour ‘£10 Challenge’ event, which has since received a ‘Badge of Honour’ and recognition as a ‘High Impact’ event by the organisers of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012.

Ten teams progressed and, supported by a business mentor, developed their business ideas and concepts in a bid to raise the funds.

Riverside Innovation Centre (RIC) staff behind the initiative, and the teams who reached the fi nal stage, shared their entrepreneurial journey with people who have been particularly supportive of the project including both team mentors and partners.

In an exciting fi nale, ‘Funders of Last Resort’ pledged to support teams who had not quite reached the fi nish line. Funders including: Fran Hulbert, Chair of the RIC Steering Group; Neal Edwards, Wheatsheaf Investments; John-Newton Jones, Snowdonia Cheese; and David Pickering, Meadow Foods Ltd, provided a substantial amount of sponsorship, which was subsequently allocated to the teams who impressed the most.

The RIC is part-funded by the ERDF. Kirsty Badrock, Innovation and Enterprise Co-ordinator, said: “We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming amount of support the project has received from local businesses. The list of people to thank is truly endless; all of whom have come together to provide this enriching experience for our students.”

Four teams will now travel to Rio de Janeiro to attend the main summit of the GEC2013, network with local entrepreneurs and business owners, meet with entrepreneurial students studying at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio

de Janeiro, and experience the business culture of a city rising in stature with the backdrop of the upcoming 2014 World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Michael Williams, a second-year Business Management and Entrepreneurship student, said: “I am very excited to be travelling to Rio as part of Challenge 2013. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging experience. I look forward to meeting the international delegates at the GEC, the Brazilian business leaders and students studying in Rio.

“I am immensely appreciative of the support given by the funders to get us to Rio and thoroughly enjoyed talking about my company, MD Supplies Ltd and getting feedback and advice on how I can develop it further in the future.”
