FED Reading Salon for Postgraduates
Organized by Educational Research Centre (ERC),
FED Reading Salon for Postgraduates had their
first meeting on 17 December 2008. Dr. Vong Sou
Kuan, Director of ERC, hosted the salon.
Dr. Vong first stated the reason why she organized
this salon. She said: “Every postgraduate should
read certain classical books, especially those
majoring in education, because they may face a
potential threat that their horizon might be
narrower and narrower. Thus, extensive reading
can have their vision expanded. Meanwhile,
members of the salon may inspire each other
while exchanging ideas.” Then, each member
shared the reason why they took part in this salon.
Yin Dan, a postgraduate from Curriculum and
Instruction, said: “Reading is a part of my life.
Book to me is like water to fish. I hope reading
could become a pleasure as stated on the poster of
the salon. I wish I can take to reading like duck to
water”
All members shared their favorite books, and
recommended classis to each other. Also, they
made appointment for next gathering.

departments of the university participated.
Dr Tang pointed out that the development of
spirituality was very important for students. He
showed the audience a video clip in order to
answer two questions on this topic: 1. What kind
of regulations and rules of this society restrict the
liberty of our spirituality? 2. What kind of
regulations and rules of education today restrict
the liberty of students’ spirituality? Dr Tang’s
deconstruction of traditional education ideas set
students thinking more about education.
Incidentally, it happened to be Dr. Vong’s birthday
that day, so all students present gave their best
wishes to her.

Comparative Education Society of Hong Kong( CESHK) , hosted by the University of
Macau(UM), and sponsored by Tertiary Education
Services Office, was held on 17 January. It
brought together scholars from different parts of
the world, with 40 papers presented.
Prof. Crain Soudien of University of Cape Town,
world-renowned scholar and WCCES President,
was invited to deliver a keynote speech, entitled
“What are the questions that post-colonialism
asks of comparative education?”, in which he
sought the way to solve the old educational
problems of oppression, discrimination,
marginalization, etc. within the new post-colonial
framework.
Dr. David K K Chan of City University of Hong
Kong, CESHK president, pointed out in his
plenary address that post-colonial critics used
neo-colonialism to criticize the “colonialism” in
economics, culture, media, language, education
and religion after “political de-colonization” , and
that the globalized education, in fact, was a
“re-colonization of education” according to the
criteria of the Anglo-American paradigm.
Prof. Wen Jing SHAN of UM, CESHK Vice
president,made a welcome speech, emphasizing
that on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of
CESHK, 10th anniversary of Faculty of Education
of UM, and the 10th anniversary of Macao SAR,
Macao has emerged from the colonial into the
post-colonial era and that Macao education has
gradually gone public and systematized. Thus, the
post-colonial reflections may help Macao carry
out thoroughgoing reforms, tackle problems at the
roots and minimize the negative effects of
changing situations.
Other papers presented at the parallel sessions
discussed higher education, early childhood
education, common education, bi-lingual
education, multi-cultural education, gender
education, teachers’ training etc. in different
countries and regions such as, China Mainland,
Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, Indonesian,
Russia, the Philippines, America, Japan and so on,
and the global financial crisis, post-modernism,
the relationship among parents, government,
society and schools were also explored.
Dr. David K K Chan of City University of Hong
Kong, CESHK president, made the annual report
FED NFED NFED NFED NEWSLETTEREWSLETTEREWSLETTEREWSLETTER

of CESHK 2009 at the closing ceremony of the
conference.
The theme “Post-Colonial Education
Development” was highly relevant, considering
the particular background of the colonialism in
Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. That many
renowned scholars from different parts of the
world came to Macao to share their ideas about
post-colonial education greatly contributes to the
education in Asia and even the world.
Prof. Qiang was invited to give a
seminar on Foreign Language
Immersion Instruction to Macao
teachers
The Seminar “Foreign Language Immersion as an
Educational Innovation in the World: Its Effects
and Experience in China”, organized by the
Faculty of Education, University of Macau and
Education Alumni Association of South China
Normal University, was held in the Auditorium of
Macao Chinese Educators’ Association, on 16
January 2009. Prof Qiang Haiyan of the South
China Normal University (SCNU) was the invited
speaker and Prof. Sylvia Sao Leng Ieong of
University of Macau chaired this seminar. Senior
Macao educator, Ms. Lao Sin Peng also
participated and shared some success stories of
Macao Tong Nam School.
Prof. Qiang Haiyan focused on the principles,
origins, features, development and its influence of
foreign language immersion in the world. She
illustrated the development of English immersion
in China with her own research, experiment and
practice. To be specific, she shared her
achievements in her eight years’ middle school
English immersion experiments in Guangzhou,
Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Fuzhou, Dongguan,
Shenzhen and Macao from 1997 to 2003, as well
as the challenges.
Towards the end of the seminar, Ms. Lao Sin Peng
shared some success stories of English immersion
in Macau Tong Nam School.

English immersion, which indicates Macao
teachers, especially English teachers, are
interested in English immersion instruction and
are eager to learn new things to innovate teaching
and learning.

A note on “Retreat Day”
Everyday we gasp for breath in this hustling and
bustling world. We hope that one day we can
retreat from this busy and noisy environment to
enjoy the quiet and peace of mind so that we can
really ponder and reflect. The answer coming up
from this “retreat” is the true answer of our heart.
