In addition to the programs at the University of Calgary campus, there are programs offered in Edmonton, Lethbridge and in several rural, remote and Aboriginal communities. Students can study for the degree on a full- time or part-time basis. However, students in Calgary, Edmonton or Lethbridge must be registered full time when they enroll in the final field practicum, Social Work 408/409. There are five admission/program routes that are described in the section entitled “BSW Routes.” Minor in Social Work The Minor in Social Work is no longer offered. The program is based on the social worktenets of mobilizing strengths of individualsand groups, social engagement and civilsocieties, respect for diversity, inclusion,equitable participation, and social justice.

The program is grounded in the vision andmission of the Faculty, inquiry basedmethods of learning, the Codes of Ethics andStandards of Practice of the social workprofession, and the national accreditationstandards for schools of social work.

OpportunitiesThe BSW provides the student with theprofessional knowledge, theory and skills ofsocial work including a wide range ofexperiential opportunities to integrate thislearning in supervised practice settings.Upon graduation, students are prepared topractice as generalist social workers in awide variety of social welfare fields in acontinuously changing world. Areas ofpractice opportunities include child welfare,family violence, community development,mental health, gerontology and social policydevelopment working with individuals,families, groups, organizations, and commu-nities in a variety of settings including public,non-profit and for-profit agencies andorganizations.

Social Work Students’ SocietyThe Social Work Students’ Society (SWSS)is actively involved in the governance of theFaculty, with representatives on FacultyCouncil and Faculty committees. The societyis an active advocate of student interestsand issues, and a sponsor of fundraisingsocial events for charitable causes. Allstudents in the Faculty of Social Work areeligible for membership.

Code of ConductThe study of social work practice placesstudents in a position of special trust withprofessional social workers and their clients.The Faculty recognizes that social workeducation occurs both inside and outside theclassroom and has the responsibility toensure that its graduates are competent andethical. A student’s impaired judgement ornon-academic misconduct may be groundsfor determining whether the student shouldcontinue in the program, with or withoutconditions, or be dismissed from the Facultyof Social Work.

CriteriaThe following examples illustrate situationsin which, in particular circumstances, astudent may be assessed as being unsuit-able. The list is not exclusive of othermisconduct:

• Concealment or distortion of the truth onthe Application for Admission to theFaculty of Social Work or the Universityof Calgary.

• Persistent and/or serious conduct thatcontravenes the University of CalgaryStatement on Principles of Conduct.

• Persistent and/or serious unethicalbehaviour as defined by the CanadianAssociation of Schools of Social WorkCode of Ethics, 1983 and the Standardsof Ethical Practice for Social Workers inAlberta, 2001. Such unethical behaviourincludes (but is not limited to):

(a) Persistent and/or serious medicalcondition that affects the student’sability to perform as a social worker ifthat condition negatively affectsjudgement and interferes with theability to function within a professionalcontext;

(b) Persistent substance abuse (e.g.,alcoholism, drug addiction, use ofillegal drugs) that interferes with theability to function within a professionalcontext;

(c) Criminal behaviour (i.e., arrests andconvictions for such crimes asphysical assault, sexual assault, drugtrafficking) that interferes with theability to function within a professionalcontext;

(d) Persistent and or/serious conductthat contravenes the policies of thepracticum setting (applies to studentsin practicum);

(e) Imposing stereotypes on a client,including behaviour, values, or rolesrelated to race, ethnicity, religion,marital status, gender, sexualorientation, age, socio-economicstatus, income source or amount,political affiliation, disability ordiagnosis, or national origin, thatwould interfere with the provision ofprofessional services to the client;and

(f) Persistent and/or serious inability toform a professional, helpingrelationship.

Procedures following an allegation ofmisconduct can be found in the Faculty ofSocial Work Program Guides.

Faculty RegulationsAdmissionsApplicants must meet the basic Universityadmission requirements. Students who lackuniversity admission requirements cannot beadmitted to the Faculty. In addition, appli-cants must have a minimum grade pointaverage of 2.30 calculated over the mostrecent course work to a maximum of tenhalf-course equivalents (University ofCalgary courses and/or transfer coursestaken at other institutions). All grades withina session will be included except where thenumber of courses taken within a sessionexceeds that required to fulfill (to a maximumof) ten half-course equivalents, in whichcase, the highest grades will be used. Seethe BSW Routes sections regarding use ofSpring and Summer Sessions courses.

Admission quotas limit enrollment in each ofthe routes. Therefore, not all qualifiedapplicants may be admitted. All students

compete for admission. Students areadmitted to the Fall Session only.

Applicants must submit both a completedFaculty of Social Work or Faculty of SocialWork Access Application for Admission formin addition to a University of CalgaryApplication for Admission form. Additionalrequirements for each route are listed belowin the “BSW Routes” sections.

Students who wish to transfer from onelocation (e.g. Calgary) to another location(e.g. Edmonton) must seek advice from theStudent Services Office. A Change ofProgram form must be completed by March1 and Faculty approval must be obtained.Requests for transfer will not automaticallybe approved.

Application DeadlinesApplication and documentation deadlinesfor the Bachelor of Social Work program:Refer to the Applications for AdmissionSchedule in this Calendar for applicationdeadlines.

March 1 for the Faculty of Social Work“Application for Admission” or Faculty ofSocial Work Access Application form, threereference letters (one of which must beacademic), required essay, information onrelevant volunteer/work experience to theFaculty of Social Work.

June 30 for official and complete transcriptsreceived by the Admissions Office.

Note: Spring and Summer Sessions coursestaken immediately prior to the Fall Sessionfor which admission is being sought will notbe used in the calculation of the grade pointaverage for admission purposes.

Only continuing students at the University ofCalgary may complete a Change of Programform. The following categories of applicantsto the University of Calgary must completethe regular University of Calgary “Applicationfor Admission/Readmission” form:

(a) not previously attended,

(b) attended as a visiting or unclassifiedstudent,

(c) attended another institution sinceleaving,

(d) not attended for two years or more.

In addition, all applicants must complete theFaculty of Social Work or Faculty of SocialWork Access “Application for Admission”form.

RegistrationCourse LoadThe normal course load is five half-courseequivalents per session.

Accuracy of RegistrationAll students are responsible for the com-pleteness and accuracy of their registrationand for arranging their course selections tomeet all program requirements as detailed inthis Calendar.

Interruption of Program Leadingto a DegreeStudents who interrupt their degree programin the Faculty of Social Work are warned thatafter an absence of one calendar year fromacademic study at the university level, theymay be required to comply with any regula-tions that may have come into effect inregard to their program requirements.Students who choose to withdraw for a yearwill not be required to re-apply for admission.However, they must notify the Faculty ofSocial Work in writing by March 1 of theirintention to return. Students who arerequired to withdraw for academic reasonswill not normally be readmitted.

Other RequirementsIn order to take advantage of technicallyenhanced courses, video-conferencing andweb-based tools, students must be familiarwith navigating on the internet and haveaccess to computer hardware and software.Some courses may be available only on-lineor by video-conferencing. E-mail is routinelyused to disseminate information to students.An e-mail address is required for fullparticipation in Faculty life. Calgary, Edmon-ton and Lethbridge provide limited space incomputer laboratories. Students should seekadvice from the Student Services Office orthe Manager of Information Technology(located in Calgary) if they encounterdifficulties in meeting these expectations.

Effective Writing RequirementStudents who have not met the University’sEffective Writing requirement on admissionmust satisfy the requirement by the end oftheir first year in the Faculty of Social Work.

Arrangements can be made for the EffectiveWriting Qualification Test to be administeredin Edmonton, Lethbridge and Access sites.

Course WorkField PracticumField practicum courses provide an opportu-nity for the student to be directly involved insocial work practice. Successful completionof these courses is a requirement forcontinuation in the program. The fieldpracticum courses are Social Work 400, 402,404 and 408/409. All continuing studentsplanning to enroll in the field practicumcourses must complete a “Field Request”form and register in the appropriatecourse(s). Students will be assignedplacements in the field practicum based onavailability, student interest and choicesmade by agencies. Information on fieldplacement arrangements, including interna-tional placements, is available from theDirector of Field Education.

Note: Students registered in the field practicumcourses - Social Work 400, 402, 404 and 408/409 - are required to attend the practicumduring Reading Days. Students should alsonote that Social Work practicum courses willnormally run one week past the last day of

lectures in Fall and Winter Sessions.

Note: All students must be registered full timewhen they enroll in Social Work 408/409.

Criminal Record CheckProspective students are advised that manyagencies who offer social work practicumplacements require that students have acriminal record check prior to acceptanceinto a placement. Registration with theAlberta College of Social Workers alsorequires a criminal record check.

Student AdvisingThe Student Services Office in the Faculty ofSocial Work advises students on academicmatters and University regulations. BSWstudents are assigned a faculty advisor whocan assist the student with professionaldevelopment and academic issues.

Program DurationDegree requirements must be completedwithin five consecutive 12-month periodsfrom the date of initial registration in theFaculty of Social Work.

Students admitted to the BSW degreeprogram prior to Fall Session 2003 will beexpected to complete their degree programsby the end of August 2005. There is noguarantee that equivalent courses will beoffered after August 2005. Students who areunable to complete their degree program bythe end of August 2005 must contact theAssociate Dean, Students by August 2004.

Student StandingPromotion and GraduationRequirements1. Academic performance and professional

suitability (see Code of Conduct) will bemonitored throughout the program andassessed at the end of each WinterSession

2. Students are allowed a maximum of two“D” or two “D+” grades in the equivalentof two half courses throughout theirprogram.

3. A student who fails or withdraws from afield practicum course (Social Work 400or 402 or 404 or 408/409) will fail or berequired to withdraw from the corequisitecourses (Social Work 403 or 405 and407). In addition, the student may berequired to withdraw from the program.

4. A cumulative grade point average of2.30 or above is required on all coursestaken towards the BSW degree.Normally, a student who has obtained acumulative GPA of at least 2.00 but lessthan 2.30 will be placed on academicprobation. Students whose cumulativeGPA falls below 2.00 will be required towithdraw.

5. Students who are required to withdrawfrom the Faculty of Social Work will notnormally be readmitted.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Social Workdegree from the University of Calgary,students must meet all program require-ments as described below under “BSWRoutes.” All students must complete aminimum of 10 half courses at the Universityof Calgary to obtain a degree from thisinstitution. In the case of a student repeatinga required course, the GPA for graduationpurposes (not degrees with distinction) shallinclude only the higher grade.

GradingThe regular University grading systemapplies to all courses except field practicumcourses (Social Work 400, 402, 404 and 408/409). These courses are graded as:Completed Requirements (CR) or Fail (F).

Graduation With DistinctionThe notation “With Distinction” will be inscribedon the permanent record and graduationparchment of all BSW students whose gradepoint averages on University of Calgary SocialWork graded courses places them in the top10 percent of the Faculty’s graduands. Aminimum GPA of 3.60 will be required. Fordetermination of the top 10 percent, the gradepoint averages obtained by the previous year’sgraduating class will be used.

Note: The Faculty of Social Work encouragesmulti-disciplinary learning. A list of recom-mended senior non-Social Work courses isavailable in the Student Services Office.

Calgary University TransferAdmissionStudents who have completed a minimum often transferable half courses or equivalent(nine of which are non-Social Work courses)may apply to the second year of the BSWCalgary University Transfer Route in theFaculty of Social Work. Ten half courses (orequivalent) must have been completed bythe end of the Winter Session preceding theFall Session for which entry is sought. Springand Summer Sessions courses taken in thesessions immediately preceding admissionwill not be used in the calculation of the GPAor to fulfill the ten half-course requirements.

Applicants are evaluated on the followingcriteria:

1. Grade Point Average (60%). The gradepoint average is calculated on the last10 half-course equivalents completed.Refer to the general admissions sectionfor detailed information on calculation ofthe GPA;

2. Relevant work/volunteer experience(20%);

3. Required essay (10%);

4. Three letters of reference (10%).

Note: Applicants wishing to take thecomplete BSW degree program at theUniversity of Calgary may complete their tenspecified half-course equivalents required foradmission in a number of Faculties. Thethree most common choices are (in alpha-betical order) Communication and Culture,Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Calgary Post-DiplomaAdmissionStudents who will have completed a SocialWork Diploma at an Alberta CommunityCollege that has an admission agreementwith the Faculty of Social Work may apply foradmission to the 3rd year of the CalgaryBSW Post-Diploma route. Such applicantsmust also meet basic University admissionrequirements. Applicants not meetingUniversity basic admission requirementscannot be admitted to the Faculty.

Applicants are evaluated on the followingcriteria:

1. Grade Point Average (60%). The gradepoint average is calculated on the last10 half-course equivalents completed.Refer to the general admissions sectionfor detailed information on calculation ofthe GPA.

2. One letter of reference from the fieldinstructor of record (5%);

3. Required essay (10%);

4. A recommendation from the chair/director of the social work program thatthe student attended (15%);

5. Relevant volunteer/work experience(10%).

Note: For those students who graduatedwith an Alberta Social Work Diploma morethan five years prior to applying to theUniversity of Calgary, three letters ofreference are required in place of therecommendation from the chair/director ofthe social work program that the studentattended.

In order to determine the most appropriateroute, the Faculty will assess individually:

1. Those students who graduated with anAlberta Social Work Diploma more thanfive years prior to applying to theUniversity; or

2. Those students who graduated with aDiploma from a college that does nothave an agreement with the Faculty ofSocial Work.

Note: Refused applicants wishing tocomplete a BSW degree may considerentering the Calgary University TransferRoute. To do so, applicants would berequired to present the same specifiedcourses as regular University Transferapplicants and meet all other specifiedadmission criteria.

Access RouteIntroductionThe BSW Access Division provides opportu-nities for undergraduate social workeducation for Alberta students in rural,remote and Aboriginal communities. In orderto register with the BSW Access Division,students must be available to attend AccessDivision course offerings in selected rural,remote, and Aboriginal communities.

New applicants should refer to “AdmissionRequirements” in the Academic Regulationssection of this Calendar for regulationsregarding University admission requirements.

The overall objective of the BSW program isto prepare students for entry-level generalsocial work practice. The BSW programprovides opportunities for students to acquiresufficient knowledge, values, and skills to

enable them to maintain a professionalstandard of practice.

The BSW Access Division promotes access tothe BSW degree for students in rural, remote,and Aboriginal communities in Alberta. Specificsite locations for any given session may beobtained by telephoning 1-877-282-0667. TheBSW Access Division provides an undergradu-ate curriculum that is culturally and geographi-cally relevant to communities outside urbanareas. Course content is innovative andaligned with traditional philosophies andknowledge systems. Community collaboration,adaptive delivery methods, and flexible entrymodels are key features of the AccessDivision. The Access Division offers aninnovative variation of the BSW program. Thefinal degree remains the accredited Universityof Calgary BSW degree.

Core content has been grouped into fourtheme areas: Generalist Practice in Context;Communication and Information; Diversityand Oppression; Social Work Methods. Theseform the basis for courses that are listed asSocial Work 300-level courses (Social Work300, 301; 302, 303; 304, 305; 306, 307).Courses related to local region practicumplacements are listed as Social Work 400-level courses (Social Work 400, 402, 403).Social work option courses for Accessstudents have the same 500-level designationas option courses for the students in Calgary,Edmonton, and Lethbridge.

Note: Social Work 300, 301, 302, 303, 304,305, 306, 307, 400, 402 and 403 cannot betaken by students in Calgary, Edmonton, andLethbridge.

One theme full course and one portfolioproject half course are offered in each Falland Winter Session. The same course set isoffered in each site location in any givensession. Students can complete foursessions of theme and portfolio projectcourses over two academic years. Normallythe practicum and integration seminarcourses will be taken after all social worktheme and portfolio courses have beencompleted. The theme courses and relatedportfolio projects do not have to be taken in aparticular sequence.

Social Work option courses may be taken atany time in the program. Option offerings inblock format will be made available inSpring/Summer Sessions.

Access University TransferRouteAdmissionThe Access University Transfer admitsstudents at the third year level. Therefore, bythe end of the Summer Session precedingthe Fall Session for which entry is sought,applicants will have completed a minimum18 (of the 20) half-course equivalents.
