INTRODUCTION | PAGE 2

This issue of Summit, and its online equivalent, highlights how faculty have embraced our experiential education focus. The sweeping range of SUU faculty engagement and support of students, publications, presentations, exhibitions, and research projects is emblematic of our mission to be a “dynamic teaching and learning community inspired by our unique natural surroundings.”

This issue of Summit features programs from our new Harry Reid Outdoor Engagement Center. For example, an interdisciplinary faculty retreat to the Grand Canyon challenges the way participants approach teaching. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean, Dr. James McDonald, previews exciting plans for future symposia sponsored by the Center. The work of Art and Design Department faculty member Ron Spears, a Zion Artist in Residence, exemplifies our faculty’s creative responses to the opportunities in our unique location.

Many of the projects featured in Summit illustrate the faculty collaboration inherent in our experiential education program, now dubbed the EDGE (Education Designed to Give Experience). The EDGE program is becoming a model other universities and colleges are emulating.

This university has always been known for its engaged faculty, so it is important to remember Summit highlights what many faculty will tell you is business as usual. It is truly rewarding to work with faculty dedicated to a wide range of creative and scholarly activity that is much more than “business as usual.”

WELCOME

Brad CookSUU Provost

Leadership and Awards

Professor Carrie Trenholm, the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Chair in Elementary Arts Education, was named SUU’s Civically Engaged Scholar.

Casey Bowns and Marissa Foster, who oversee SUU’s Motor Pool & Receiving, were honored as SUU’s Civically Engaged Staff

Projects

Dr. Earl Mulderink traveled in January with Rural Health Scholars (RHS) students to Nicaragua and during Spring Break to Panama. In addition, he organized a trip with eight SUU students in May-June 2012 entitled “History and Service-Learning in Ghana,” when students engaged in some service work in an orphanage, a medical clinic, and an elementary school.

Pam Branin organized SUU’s “Service Saturday” on August 25, 2012. Approximately 1800 freshmen participated, giving them the opportunity to get socialized to Cedar City, appreciate the value of service, and feel a part of the institutional vision and values. Student activities included a door-to-door food drive for the Iron County Care and Share, assembling literacy packets, working with Special Olympics athletes and their families, landscaping projects, habitat reclamation, carwashes, and other activities.

Pam Branin also oversees several student-led programs at SUU, including AfterSchool Sports Program; Alternative Spring Breaks; Bread and Soup Nite, a monthly dinner that raises money for the HOPE pantry; the HOPE (Help Our People Eat) pantry, which provides food for approximately 100 students a month and is one of the first student food pantries in the country; the Paiute Center Reading/Tutoring program; the Service Hall Living Learning Community; Special Olympics; Sub-for-Santa; weekly story time at the Cedar Library in the Park; and fitness and swim programs for East Elementary and Head Start. For more information on these programs, visit the center website (listed above).

and service-learning activities through academic classes.

The CEC contributed to development of SUU’s exciting new Experiential Education (EE) program with new courses and components for a “community engagement” track. The EE program began in earnest in Fall 2011 with over 1,000 students enrolled in UNIV 1010, Introduction to Experiential Education.

In 2010, SUU was named a Carnegie Community Engaged Institution, one of a select group of universities (about 300 out of 4000+ higher education institutions receive this endorsement) that demonstrate community engagement: “collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.”

HARRY REID OUTDOOR ENGAGEMENT CENTER | PAGE 6

The Harry Reid Outdoor Engagement Center (HROEC) aims to involve SUU students and faculty in the outdoors at three levels. The first is recreational—“pure fun,” as director Briget Eastep terms it. The second level is that of skill development: providing opportunities for life-long learning, technical skills, leadership, and outdoor skills. The third level is that of career development; for instance, furthering an interest in geology, agricultural sciences, outdoor recreation, and so forth.

Publications and Presentations

Dr. Briget Eastep, Dr. Todd Petersen (English), and Seth Ohms (IIC Coordinator),presented “Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative: A National Model” at Southern Utah University, July 2012. This was a presentation meeting with over 65 land managers and educators, for John Wessells, Director of National Park Service’s Intermountain Region.

Dr. Briget Eastep attended a meeting for the Color Country Youth Initiative in July 2012, at SUU. Twenty six educators and land managers from Southern Utah gathered to assess the viability of a coordinated outdoor youth initiative

Dr. Briget Eastep presented “Rigor in Experiential Education!?” at the Rocky Mountain Regional Association for Experiential Education Conference, Durango, CO, in April 2012.

Dr. Briget Eastep and Dr. Todd Petersen presented “SUU’s Experiential Learning Curriculum” at the Utah System of Higher Education’s Educated Persons Conference, Snowbird, UT, in October 2011.

Dr. Emmett Steed (Hotel, Resort, Hospitality management), Dr. Wayne Roberts (Marketing) and Dr. Briget Eastep published a research report, “Southern Utah Visitors Profile Survey,” with the Utah Office of Tourism, Salt Lake City, UT, 2011.

Leadership and Awards

HSS Dean Dr. Jim MacDonald is the first Harry Reid Distinguished Fellow for Outdoor Engagement (see an interview with Dean MacDonald in the print version of Summit).

Steve McCarthy, Seth Ohms, and Ryan Young established grants with regional National Parks Service, Bureau of Land Management, Dixie National Forest, Kaibab National Forest, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Utah Division of Workforce Services for over $700,000.

Dr. Danielle Dubrasky, Associate Professor of Creative Writing, took her poetry class on an evening excursion to Cedar Breaks National Monument on Friday, September 14, 2012. The trip was coordinated by the Harry Reid Outdoor Engagement Center (HROEC). The students watched the sunset and then gathered at the Star Pad to watch the stars come out. The students were given time to reflect on their feelings and their experience. Later, Briget Eastep, coordinator of the HROEC, pointed out some constellations and discussed their cultural significance. Afterward, each student wrote a poem about a constellation. Once revised, these poems will be exhibited in the library in February, 2013. As Shawn Domgaard, a senior communication major, explained to SUU News, this engagement with the outdoors “helped me to write and also stimulate ideas, without being in a classroom. It was a very unorthodox way of learning from an academic stance, but it was very effective.”

Dr. Briget Eastep, as HROEC director, also oversees the SUU Pacesetters Outdoor Program, an outdoor leadership club that allows students to lead wilderness orientation programs and the Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative (IIC), which places students from a variety of fields into outdoor internships.

LEADERSHIP ENGAGEMENT CENTER | PAGE 8

This is the first year for the newly launched Leadership Engagement Center. The primary function of the LEC is to support students who are launching their EDGE Projects with a focus on leadership.  Secondary to that, the LEC serves as an interactive, dynamic influence for SUU and the community to increase leadership understanding and skills in individuals, groups and organizations.

Projects

“Leading Men and Ladies,” features movies with moments of excellent leadership. Participants identify exemplary moments of leadership in the featured film and discuss them.

The Leadership Center is planning a study abroad opportunity for Maymester 2013, “Rebels of the Renaissance,” which will take students and other interested participants to various cities in Italy to study the leaders from that time and place whose leadership has had lasting change in the world.

Academic ConferenceSUU’s Sargon Heinrich Global Engagement Center and the Women and Gender Studies program co-sponsored a conference, “Human Trafficking: People, Places, & Voices,” April 11-13, 2012. The conference was open to the public and over 500 people attended. Anuradha Koirala, 2010 CNN Hero of the Year and founder of Maiti Nepal, an organization that helps victims of gender exploitation (including sex trafficking, child prostitution and other forms of abuse), was the keynote speaker. At Thursday Convocation, Koirala described her personal experience of abuse, and how that led her to found Maiti Nepal. She described the wide-spread problem of sex trafficking in Nepal, a problem compounded by gender discrimination, lack of jobs and education for women, open borders and poverty. Other conference speakers included academics, artists, and activists from around the world, as well as over 40 SUU students.

Based in part on the success of the conference, Maiti Nepal agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with SUU; this document will lead to further collaboration and opportunities for SUU students and faculty. Provost Brad Cook explained to SUU news reporter Holly Linford that “This conference was just a conversation starter. It was a call to action. We want our students and faculty to be engaged in real issues where they will do something to create change.”

American Cultural CenterSUU has also received a grant from the U.S. Department of State to establish an American Cultural Center in China, at the Hunan Normal University (HNU) campus in Changsha. This grant is part of a group of grants intended to foster cultural exchanges between the U.S. and China. This center will be one of 22 in China, created in response to Chinese cultural centers in the U.S. Starting in March 2013, the American Cultural Center of Changsha will offer lectures, service projects, film screenings, English language tutoring sessions and other activities designed to enhance Chinese understanding of American culture, history, values,

Dean co-directed the Archaeology Field-school in June 2011 (this year students excavated at Fort Harmony and surveyed public lands in the Cedar area), and -- generously funded by a FSSF research grant -- investigated late Inca occupations in the Cuzco, Peru region in July and August. Recently, she and Barbara Frank renewed a $25,000 collaborative grant with Bryce Canyon National Park. This two year project trains and employs SUU students to help conduct archaeological surveys in the park. Emily is excited about the prospect of helping to design and implement a new Anthropology major in the coming year.

Dr. Shobha Hamal Gurung was instrumental in organizing the Human Trafficking Conference at SUU in April 2012. Her connection with CNN Hero of the Year, Anuradha Koirala, made it possible for Koirala to attend the conference as the keynote speaker

By visiting a country abroad, they sought to gain a true appreciation for cultural similarities and differences in attitudes and behaviors related to health and social behavior. They sought to expand students’ cultural awareness in general, decrease ethnocentric beliefs and attitudes, and to enhance their personal and professional growth.

Karl Stevens (Director of SUU Online) presented “A Case Study of Professors’ and Instructional Designers’ Experiences in the Development of Online Courses” at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Continuing Higher Education, Austin TX, November 2012. This presentation was part of his doctoral research, focusing on the experiences had by professors and instructional designers during the online course development process, and whether those experiences had any effect on the process itself.  Finding suggest there is value in fostering a positive culture within the work environment.  Communication, mutual respect, commitment to excellence, and enjoyment are all essential to the successful development process.  A recommendation is that managers attempt to assign professor and instructional designer partners that share common design and pedagogy goals.

This project has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Continuing Higher Education.

Presentations and Publications

Lindsay Fullerton (Academic Advising) presented “Communicating Clear Mes-sages to Students” at the Utah Advising and Orientation Association, in May 2012. As part of the Utah Advising Community the annual conference is only successful if members are willing to present new ideas and topics for all to learn from. This presentation was filled beyond room capacity with over 25 attendees sitting on the floor to attend the session.

Lindsay Fullerton and Adam Black (Utah Valley University) facilitated a workshop, “Networking Session: Personalized, Intentional Advising” at the Utah Advising and Orientation Association, in May 2012. The conference holds networking sessions where individuals are invited to host discussion groups on topics that their institu-tion is effective at. It is excellent that SUU was recognized within the state as a leader in the area of Intentional Advising.

Dr. David J. Lunt (University College) and Mark Dyreson (Penn State) published “The 1904 Olympic Games: Triumph or Nadir?” in The Handbook of Olympic Studies, ed. Stephen Wagg and Helen Lenskyj. London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2012. 48-59. This chapter deals with the 1904 Olympic Games and devotes special atten-tion to the role of science and to the worries of declining American exceptionalism in the context of the 1904 Olympic Festival in St. Louis, Missouri. The beginning of the Progressive Era marked an important moment in US history as Americans faced challenges of industrialization, urbanization, and the emergence of a working class. Without wild frontiers to hone the American spirit, Americans turned to sport to train their youth in appropriate vigor. The 1904 Olympic Games provided an occa-sion to showcase the advanced nature of American science and American culture against the nations of the world.

Dr. David J. Lunt. “Chasing the Fleet-footed Hero: Alexander at the Tomb of Achilles” in Ancient World, 42.2 (2011): 157-165. In 334 BCE, Alexander the Great visited the tomb of Achilles near the site of ancient Troy. At the monument, Alexander ran a race with his companions in honor of the mythic hero. I argue that Alexander, in a fashion consistent with ancient Greek ritual and belief, used the race to invite the spirit of Achilles to manifest itself. By inviting and honoring the dead Achilles to his presence, Alexander was enlisting the hero’s supernatural powers in the fledgling Macedonian campaign against the Persian Empire

LIBRARYOn Fourth Annual Gala

The fourth annual Friends of the Library Gala was held October 13, 2012. The gala was themed “All Aboard” and celebrated the anniversaries of three organizations that played critical roles in developing and promoting southern Utah: the Utah Parks Company, Union Pacific Railroad, and the Sherratt Library’s Special Collections.

The Utah Parks Company (UPC) celebrates its 90th anniversary this year; the Union Pacific Railroad was begun 150 years ago and had a branch in Cedar City (which helped ferry tourists through Southern Utah’s parks); and the Library’s Special Collections was begun 50 years ago by Library Director Tom Challis and Special Collections librarian Inez cooper.

The gala featured hors d’ouvres in the library lobby, an exhibit of Union Pacific photos, and remarks by former UPC employees Mary Ellen Edmunds and her brother Paul Edmunds. Following the speeches, the SUU Jazz band played hits from the 1940s and 50s and guests enjoyed birthday cake.

and museum curator at the state park. We conceived the idea when we were officers in the Historical Society. We have attended six employee reunions for Bryce Canyon, Zion, North Rim and Cedar Breaks, recorded about 130 oral histories (most of them on video), scanned 1800 photographs which are on the library website, etc. My paper on Gronway and Chauncey Parry came out of the project as we interviewed their children and researched the first Utah Parks Circle tours. It was originally presented at the Utah State Historical Society annual. Seegmiller and Paul plan to publish a book, Sing-Away: Fifty Years of Working and Playing for the Utah Parks Company.

Projects

Professor Janet Seegmiller and Paula Mitchell (University Archivist) completed a major Colorado Plateau CESU grant awarded by Zion National Park. Over a three-year period, 108 oral histories recorded in Zion National Park have been transcribed and the audio and video recordings digitized to increase access to these vital histories of the CCCs, Paiute weavers, and Utah Parks Company. These oral histories are a valuable resource for both the national park and the southern Utah region. The recordings capture personal experiences of men in the CCCs who built the park buildings, bridges, trails, etc. and saved the Virgin River from erosion. Most of the men are now deceased, but we know how they did their work and conditions for young men in the 1930s because of this project. I’m hoping we can get some of the recordings to the families of these men who may not even know that they were done. The recordings we have of UPC employees similarly capture experiences of college-age employees who made the tourist experience memorable for thousands of visitors between 1924 and the early 1970s. Many of the employees were students at BAC/CSU and earned their tuition working in the parks. These individuals were highlighted at the Library Gala. These transcriptions are available in SUU Special Collections.

Professor Janet Seegmiller and Paula Mitchell recorded oral histories and images from the Utah Parks Company

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM | PAGE 49

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

With national participation in undergraduate research reaching an all-time high, SUU is taking a leadership role by including research as a major emphasis in its new academic roadmap. The Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Program (UGRASP) eagerly anticipates the many ways in which students might best be served by the program.

Perhaps the most direct contribution of UGRASP is to provide funding for undergraduate research and scholarship conduction and dissemination. Grant awards of up to $500 are available to students from all disciplines across campus.

UGRASP also facilitates student dissemination of the work in written, verbal, and performance venues. For example, SUU students and faculty can look forward to is our annual Student-Faculty Scholarship Day (SFSD). Now in its 13th year, the day long, campus-wide event is scheduled for March 20th, in the Sharwan Smith Center. To facilitate participation, classes will be suspended for the day and students and faculty from every discipline across campus are invited to display their work at the SFSD. The caliber of work presented here is tremendous. Online submissions will begin in February.

Another highlight of the yearly activities of UGRASP includes the annual Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research (UCUR) in the spring. Based off the prestigious National Conference on Undergraduate Research, UCUR is a statewide conference dedicated to the dissemination of student research and creative activity. This year Utah State will be hosting the state-wide event. UGRASP will cover all expenses for students who present at this conference.

Last but in no way least, UGRASP continues to provide funding for undergraduate research and scholarship conduction and dissemination. Grant awards of up to $500 are available, and both students and faculty are eligible. Help spread the word.

“The Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Program (UGRASP) at Southern Utah University is committed to fostering a community of scholars across all disciplines. As part of its mission, the program will encourage and support student-mentor collaborations in research and creative expression, preparing students to become the scholars, scientists, and leaders of tomorrow.”

Presentations and Publications

John Shafer and Lynne Brown presented “Financial Literacy with SSS students” at the regional ASPIRE Conference, Billings, MT, October 2012. US Dept of ED grant requires that SSS students are given skills and knowledge in economic and financial literacy. SSS staff at SUU have developed a seminar on this topic and are sharing our program with other TRIO programs (federal outreach programs) in the region.

Kim Roeder published “Make the Leap: Mid-Career changes Can Bring Benefits, Opportunities” in Campus Activities Programming, 45.4 (October 2012): 52-55. Campus Activities Programming is the official publication of the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA). Kim’s piece is located in the professional development section of the magazine, and provides advice to professionals in the field about considering work opportunities that will expose them to new cultures and challenges.

Projects and Grants

Lynne Brown and Mark Davis (Advancement Office and Student Support Center) received a grant award from AT&T for the AT&T College Prep Program for Native American and Hispanic Youth. Planning starts in fall 2012 and the program will begin operation during the summer of 2013. This program will offer a summer college prep week on the SUU campus for Native American and Hispanic high school junior and senior students. We hope to encourage these groups to attend college after high school. The program will use SUU students as interns and mentors.

Jake Johnson and Dr. Bill Heyborne (Advisors to the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society) participated in the Red Rock Relay fundraising effort. Eleven students from SUU’s Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa completed the 187-mile Red Rock Relay to raise funds for the honor society and the Canyon Creek Women’s Crisis Center. On October 3, 2012 the members presented the CCWCC with a check for $1,080 which will go to the Center’s efforts to create an outreach center for the public. The gift coincided perfectly with the programs being held for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October).

Awards

Carmen Alldredge won the Friend of ASPIRE award at the ASPIRE regional conference, Billings, MT, October 2012. Carmen is being recognized with the top regional ASPIRE award for a non-TRIO person who has supported the ideals and goals of TRIO programs and students.
